Vikings | Team to complete visit with D. Smith today
Tue, 25 Jul 2006 06:04:25 -0700
The Star Tribune reports free agent S <A href="http://www.kffl.com/player/1793/nfl">Dwight Smith (Saints) will wrap up a two-day visit with the Minnesota Vikings Tuesday, July 25. Agent Drew Rosenhaus refused to say whether his client was close to signing with the Vikings Monday evening, July 24. "I'm not going to have any comment on Dwight's visit," he said. Smith told the St. Petersburg Times before his trip to Minnesota Monday that he would return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a one-year contract if he is unable to get a multiyear deal from another team. Smith already has offers from Tampa Bay and the Baltimore Ravens. A Vikings spokesman said the team would have no comment.

I basically lost hope the second he got released.

This move makes too much sense for us, why would we do that?

Honestly, it would appear that they never had any interest in the first place. Obviously, they're much more comfortable with our woefully subpar FS's than I am.

I still can't figure out why no interest. We have one weak link on defense. A much better solution than what we have smacks us in the face - and it is subsequently ignored. Makes no sense to me.

nothing, We just drafted our future at FS, why go spend money on a guy, that would only hender his growth.

I think us not going after him shows the faith the coaching staff has in the FS postion, i wonder why fans never trust the decsions, of the coahcing staff, you know the guys that get paid to evualate players, i mean its not like we're still in the campo years

Davis, Coleman, and Watkins

I would hope that they like what they see in Watkins, since Coleman hasn't looked good in camp and Davis was recently shot.

My guess, they don't want to get into
a bidding war.It would be nice ,wishful thinking,to
see at the last second,Dallas make a pitch for him.

You folks are goofy. Building a team isn't just about "plugging bodies in" willy-nilly.

Things like the salaray cap, age and most importantly-- expected productivity for the cost. The GM/braintrust needs to ask themselves "Who else do I have that seems to have the potential this guy does" is already on my roster?

While I'm not big Davis fan, I think he's OK. Coleman I'm even less excited about.

There is no doubt in my mind that we aren't pursuing Smith because of the presence of Watkins on the roster. You give Watkins a year to fill out and learn the system and I think you'll find our FS problems solved for the next ten years.

Smith won't give us that.

I would have liked seeing Dallas get Smith but it didn't happen so we move on with what we have. While I'm not sold on Davis as of yet I do think we have better competition behind him who will challenge for the spot

He's not an old man. I'm fully behind Watkins, ok? Me wanting Smith has nothing to do with the guy. It has to do with this really looking like a super bowl year. I understand that you can't just go nuts - but his contract shouldn't be prohibitive. If this is a super bowl year, I can't understand not shoring up the only weak spot in your defense.

By doing what, outbidding 2 and threee teams, for a guy that would only be a one year stand,

and on top of that this guy wants a multi million dollar deal, not to be a stop plug till a rookie is ready

When did Watkins become worth anything? You're telling me you're happier making a super bowl run with a fifth round rookie who's too skinny for his own good, rather than an established free safety, who can allow Roy to do what he wants?

It's also possible Ireland & Parcells have inside character-type info on Smith from you know who so they don't want to be bothered with him. We've already got TO to deal with & CB/FS Marco Coleman who coming off alcohol problems. And I'm hoping they seeing some things they like in Watkins, who while not getting much press (probably cause he a 5th round pick and not a first day pick) seems to be playing pretty good in May/June minicamps.

Well said.

Two things instantly strike me about all of this.

#1. This is a business but with the added problem of having the total amount we spend any year "capped" so one always has to be cognizant of the ramifications of any contract hitting us down the road. We've made so many stupid choices when it comes to "trying to win now" that I'm almost totally in the other corner. The "Galloway" trade. The last Larry Allen contract. The last Aikman contract. The last contract for Emmitt Smith. All brutal decisions.

#2. I think that rookie is going to be damn good in time.

Yes

unlike most people i would rather invest in a young rookie, than over pay for a vetarn and possiblyu hender the growth of my rookie.

And too add to thast, if we outbid these other teams and and Sign D. Smith, and we dont make it to the SB or we lose to the SB, would have still been worth it?

Ah... Yes.

I don't think this team is close enough to winning the SB to sabotage any position on the roster by giving up a young guy with some upside for a guy that isn't probowl material and will cost a lot of money.
