DAK & HOW HE COMPARES TO ALL-TIME GREATS
by Kristi Scales | Nov 8, 2017 | Articles, Entertainment, The League, The Team

Sunday’s Cowboys-Falcons game in Atlanta will be Dak Prescott’s 25th NFL start. Dak’s number of wins and his passing statistics exceed many of the most prolific passers in the history of the NFL at the same point of their illustrious careers. Let’s see how Dak compares to elite QBs, past and present, through their first 24 starts.

The other quarterbacks on this list include legends like Dan Marino, John Elway, Peyton Manning and Brett Favre. The list also includes a couple of NFL MVPs who are Dak’s contemporaries: Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. And for good measure, let’s include the Cowboys’ all-time passing leader, Tony Romo.

Quarterbacks are measured, bottom line, by wins. So let’s start with wins.

Dak has 18 wins in his first 24 regular season starts. Only Dan Marino (Dolphins) had more (20). Dak is tied with Romo at 18. Tom Brady won 16 of his first 24 starts. The rest of the list: Favre (15), Elway (14), Rodgers (10), and Manning (9).

I do love the kid

I like the way he sees the field I like the way he has patience and doesn't just take off and run

his arm seems to have gone from average to strong this year he's really zipping some balls down the field.

It's early but I'm hoping we have the second coming of Rodger.

Also waiting for the disclaimer crowd to chirp in with reason as to why Dak has this success, running game, Ol, etc....but he also has no defense to truly help him with short fields and such. But they are getting there.

Dak is doing a super job, but this is so misleading.

Most of the "all-time greats" were drafted by the worst teams in football. They inherited teams that needed their entire rosters purged of garbage players. That takes time.

Look at Aikman. How many players were left from his rookie team when they won the Super Bowl in 1992? Jeffcoat, Irvin, Newton, Tuinei.........is that it?

Dak inherited the greatest offense that any rookie QB has ever played with in the history of football.

Dak’s passer rating is 102.4. The only quarterback with a higher rating through his first 24 starts is…guess who…Dan Marino (105.4).
It should have been noted in the article that Prescott's rating is 15 points higher than the current league average, while Marino's rating was 32 points higher than the league average in 1984.

This is a good way to look at it. It's always difficult to compare players from different eras. The game changes.

When you look at this, you see not only how well Dak was doing but how well Romo stacked up to the greats in the QB categories that mattered. We were blessed to have found Romo as a UDFA, and we've certainly been blessed to be able to replace him with a QB that is picking up where he left off.

How is Big Ben not on that list? Didn't he go 13-0 his first season? Pretty sure he had 19 or 20 wins in his first 24 games.

Regardless, it's a great start by Dak. Hopefully he'll only get better and finally lead this team to a 6th Lombardi.

Somewhat true but VERY impressive nonetheless. It was essentially the same offense that we couldn't win a game with the year prior. They year before that we won 12 games and NFCE. Further he's a rookie regardless. Rodgers inherited a great team led by a HOF'er that went to the NFCC game the year prior. Marino had HOF'er Shula, the Marks brothers/Nat Moore, Killer B's most if not all during his rookie year.
The same way the #1 overall pick typically inherits a bad team (unless you Tim Duncan/Andrew Luck the draft), Dak inherited a better situation mostly because he wasn't "thought of" as the same top tier QB's he's being compared to. So essentially he wasn't "supposed" to be this good but he is which is even more impressive when you think about it. Dak is incredible any way you slice it.

through their first 23 starts (not including Philly 16 for Dak) Romo & Dak both went 18-5 and both lost their first playoff game.

To me, his most impressive attribute is ball security. I'd argue that the ability to turn the ball over at an alarmingly low rate is much more individual QB-centric than it is a reflection of his teammates.

Bus driving is somewhat easy (although not entirely). He's putting up superb statistics while not turning the ball over. That's special.

"The greatest offense that any rookie QB has ever played with in the history of football" went 4-12 & ranked 22nd in yards the year before he was drafted.

He's been great.
Could not be more thrilled for him and us.

But soon as they start saying in a total team sport and individual player is primarily measure by team wins, they kind of lose me.

He's really been good at this from even back in his college days.

I will say this;
if you have a poor oline with no protection or run game, it doesn't matter how much you want to protect the ball, you're going to have to force the issue much more for your team to have chance at winning.
Lucky for him, he has maybe the very best running back and one the very best olines, so this is not a concern for him.

Not really. Marino, Brady, Favre, Rodgers, and Romo. Most of those guys were passed over at least once by most or all of the teams in the league. The ones who weren't ended up going to teams further down in the draft order anyway.
