Kill kill doesn’t change from a pass play to another pass play. It’s like a reset. It can be used to run the run play called instead of the pass play as there are two plays ready from the set. It can also be used to change the blocking and re-identify the Mike or direction of slide blocking.
There have definitely been plays when Cooper checked pass plays down to the TE or RB, but I read somewhere that he’s supposed to read the defense and commit to the read and pass to the guy dictated by the defense in order to get the ball out quickly. This protects the backup and the team from possibly playing with the 3rd string QB. It also protects a young OL from holding penalties and the QB from rushing into a bad decision and throwing an INT.
Cooper is smart, knows the offense, but like any backup with so little experience, they are keeping his number of passes pretty minimal and almost never asking him to go downfield on 2nd or 3rd and long. We are seeing runs, screens, and short passes on 3rd and 12 type plays, but we are not seeing mistakes. Most of his passes downfield have been on earlier downs or shorter yardage downs, which is smart. They are calling a game that the defense gives them the luxury to call. I think that is smart and shows discipline, and Cooper has executed what they are asking of him at a high level.
Im hoping Kellen has learned something here that we haven’t seen in a long time going way back to a dismal season when Romo was out long before Dak. While I think Dak is far superior to Rush, he has warts. Most franchise QBs not named Mahommes, Allen, Etc do, so Kellen can open up the offense with Dak, but he should still call plays that play to Dak’s strengths and ride that defense. Even Brady has warts, but he’s smart enough to avoid them on his own no matter what the play call is.
