The sticking point was he wanted a 4 year contract so he can test the market again.

is he going to now want a 3 year deal next year?

otherwise, what was the point in not accepting the 5 year? He hurt himself and the team.

just an observation, not a bash.

Good question.

Dak wanted a 4 year so he can negotiate for an extension in 3 years. That is 2022 when the NFL TV Contracts end and the new Social Media platforms add their bid to broadcast NFL content.
Basically the owners will be getting more $$$ so players want more of the pie too

Jerry should have given him the 4 year deal with language eliminating the possibility of a franchise tag at the end of the deal.

As far as I'm concerned Dak contract situation is what it is and they will deal with it one way or another this off season. Until then Dak just need to go out and lead this team. He carried a big weight yesterday and helped lead this team to an improbable win. We got 14 more to go, he just need to keep his focus on the next play.

That would be a double win for Dak. So he would get his desired structure AND he'd be guaranteed he's signing a big new contract after 4 years, whether in Dallas or somewhere else.

The 5 year contract with no tag was a fair deal for both sides.

Geez, can't believe they didn't get that done.

I agree. They got the term supposedly. I get the tag as a tool of leverage but the team isn't bound to start negotiations his last year of his deal. They can start talks about extensions whenever once a player hits his 4th year in the league

I honestly can’t believe the Jones didn’t take it. It was a good deal based on the reported numbers.

His agent wanted to wait until he split from CAA before doing the deal. He had to wait until his contract with CAA was up which was right at the deadline for Franchise Tag players to sign a contract or wait until next year.

The Agent doubles his money by waiting even if Dak signs the contract the Cowboys have already offered.
