Ya, I'm done with the Star till he gets the heck out of town......enough already!
I think I'm done too. 2 heartbreaking playoff losses to the 49ers in a row has me about as low as I've been as a fan. Any normal fan can see that Dak isn't a good QB and any idiot can see Jerry and company can't build a team. So I'm an idiot for expecting better outcomes. I think my stubbornness is causing me to keep watching. It's not fair that I've been here longer than Jerry and Jerry's ego and delusions of being a football guy is robbing me of the proud franchise I grew up with. I want to stop watching but then Jerry wins. It's not fun anymore knowing nothing will change in the front office so nothing will change on the field. Just average to above average teams with an occasional WC win every 4 or 5 years. That's all we got if we're being realistic. Now they will extend or restructure this contract to further the damage.

I will say this. Anyone knows that a player that turns the ball over in some fashion at least once a game every other game for 4 years needs to be benched, not built around. Jerry and dummy are trying to build a football team around a guy that habitually turns over the ball. Enablers can make all the excuses they want but every other game in the last 4 years Dak has either fumbled or threw a interception. Any other team with a real GM and real leadership at the top would see that and understand the problem, not invest more into it. So discouraging. Again, it's not fun anymore. Jerry has taken the fun out of being a Cowboys fan for me. I never thought I would not enjoy the Cowboys but here we are.

As Ive said on one of the other threads, bench him for 2023 and make him a June 1st 2024 cut - that way the cap hit is very manageable.

Draft a 1st round QB this year.

Bring in a cheap veteran to start the first few ganes of the season until 1st rounder ready and then be backup thereafter. Dak can be an inactive 3rd QB for the season. Tell not to even bother turning up for practise and try and work out his own trade if he wants to play in 2023.

I have never understood the cap thing... can you be kind enoug to explian the dead cap space etc etcetc please?
All money paid to a player has to go against the cap. So if you give a player a 5 year fully guaranteed contract, and you cut him next year, you still have to pay him for all 5 years. That money goes against the cap even though he's no longer on the team. Dead cap.

Here are the options with Dak

1. Cut him and rebuild. Cost is 89M in dead 2023 cap space.
2. Plan to replace him after the 2023 season. Cost is a 49M cap hit this year.
3. Extend him out to lower his cap hit and try to build a better team around him.

Guess which option the Cowboy brain trusts are most likely to choose? Dak's contract was made to restructure and that's exactly what the team will do. Dak's not going anywhere anytime soon.
You forgot option 4. Let him play out the remaining two years, then let him walk.

I think they'll choose number 3, but we'll know more when we see if his contract is restructured for 2023. I think they'll either do your number 3 or what I said.

He’s 100% going to be extended, regardless of wether people like it or if he deserves it.
They can’t afford to cut him because his cap hit would be too much and they can’t afford to leave him on his current deal because it handicaps resigning any players they need to.
The only option is to redo his deal… Sadly we’ll probably be in a similar position in a few years.
Credit Dak and his agent for putting together a contract that had a poison pill in it that Jerry swallowed up.
Hopefully we’ll resign the players we want who deserve it… but don’t go expecting any marquee free agents coming in.

Option 4, (a kind of merger of your points 2 and 3).....

....transfer Dak money into 2026 void year (which only has allocated $3.68m at present). This will free up some CAP for this year (2023), enough to compete, but not enough to chase an 'all-in' approach, which we just cant do as we cant gamble everything on Dak.

Look to cut Dak before 2024 season (unless he proves himself capable of SB success) actually saves us $12m, or more likely, $34 if we go post June. A post June cut would be possible as we would have a $81m in the bank to make signings at the front end of Free Agency AND we have the ability to make signings and extensions based on bonus, which means CAP isnt needed immediately.....it also gives us the opportunity to draft a QB (in 2023 or 2024, if there's one we're high on available at our spot).

They will renegotiate and extend his contract by 2 to 3 years.
But are they smart enough this time to write the contract so they can get out of it after 2 years with less of a cap impact.

Like it or not, we are stuck at least 2 years, probably 3.

We will need a defense that can win games, like the 2000 Ravens or 1985 Bears. You can surround him with great skill players, an elite OL. He will still throw picks if he doesn't improve.
Is that 2 to 3 years on top of the Void years. What's Dak going to provide or improve over what he is now. We are already paying him $21.8m for not playing for us.....add his contract on top and we cant afford the players to improve his game.

We hear about Dak's Rookie Contract and how we should of competed then.....but we forget the DEAD MONEY paid to Romo and Dez, killed the CAP in those years. You have to cut ties rather than extend the pain.

For those wanting the extension approach....it will mean we wont be in a position to go ALL-IN.

That's my dream scenario as well. I think something like that would keep me watching next year. If not I may become a far less passionate fan and not pay attention as much. Like maybe check to see if they win on espn site.

absolutely.

I'll still watch , but with a lot less enthusiasm. I guess I am going to have to fire up madden and win the cowboys in that game a superbowl or 2, since the real team can't get anywhere close to it. 27 years in a row. I WILL be trading Dak in game and build up my own QB1.

We can't afford the cap space required to let him play out his contract.

As said previously, we use the void years to spread out 2023's money and cut him in either 2024 (poss post-June), which creates a saving on top of a much healthier CAP or in 2025.
No need to restructure and perpetuate the good but not championship winning QB... the juxtaposition is that he needs quality players around him, which is difficult to achieve with his 20%+ CAP hit.

Trade him to GB

Spotrac after these moves has us at $11 million in cap space

Trade Dak to GB - $24 million hit
Release - Zeke and Lewis
Restructure: Tank, Martin, Gallup
Dak would have to agree to any trade. Would he want to play in GB? Who knows. The best solution and perhaps only solution is to get a better OC. Preferably one who is good at mentoring QB’s. Frank Reich is one name that intrigues me.

Yeah if they extend Dak I'm going to stop watching.

LOl who you 2 trying to kid both of yall be right here in front of the tube watching the crapshow that is our beloved cowboys. Posting stupid cowturd videos or better yet first take. If your only goal for this franchise is a superbowl then you have a right to be upset because Dak and Diggs crapped the bed. This franchise with dak at QB isnt going to overcome the lack of talent elswhere. I myself am ok if they dump him Im ok if they keep him because I dont spaz out over losses like last week because SB isnt my ONLY goal its just one of them.I get enjoyment week in and week out. 12-5 was good season andf now Im preparing for golf.

If you actually watched this team this year and felt like yea this is our year then you didnt watch it close enough. there were signs with the entire squad and dak isnt good enough to overcome them. I knew we were 2 and done at about week 13. or the Jags game whichever that was. My issue with dak is the regression but hes not alone with the demise only haters wont see that. Romo got better with age dak gets worse but they both fail

Dak is here for 2 more years you can book it. Its funny some of you only come out of the basement we he sucks.

Extend and bring in more weapons. I'm good with that. Josh Allen didn't play very good in the playoffs....I don't think Bills mafia want him gone. Maybe they understand the game and cap better than some of our fans.

They will move Dak’s money around so they won’t take the big Cap hit next season but Dak still will be able hit free agency after the 2024 season.

Yup. They gave him 31mil guaranteed salary this year, which would strongly lead to that being converted to a signing bonus due to it being guaranteed either way.
But, in the unlikely event they don't convert/restructure, then option 4 is in play.

They can make his salary work this year even at 49mil. But it would be at the cost of restructuring/extending Martin, D-Law and getting rid of Tyron Smith hopefully via trade. They set up Gallups deal to be restructured this year too, but with his meh performance, I'm not sure they want to touch that contract.

Josh Allen hurt his elbow week 8 against the Jets and toughed it out the rest of the season. He was not anywhere near 100%. If he were a major league pitcher, he would have needed Tommy John surgery. But, apparently, for NFL Qbs they recommend rest for that injury.
