If you want to move on from him, then what’s your plan at QB that will keep the Cowboys winning and having a chance in the playoffs? From all the off-season moves so far I feel that a Dak extension is a long shot at best.
They have enough now for 1 move decent FA and the new Draft pool unless I missed something here.
Prove it (Please Finally) or lose it season coming up for Mr.Prescott.

None of that cap hit is salary, so not a penny of it goes away if we extend him or do anything else. We pay that either way and any extension is on top of those amounts. BUT,,,it would really be a lot worse than what you are saying because the bigger issue is his $59M cap hit next year that we likely do something with. The lunacy of restructuring to save cap $'s in year one is you totally blow up future years.

But, If we decide that we don't want him as our QB after 2024 we aren't going to give him $200M just avoid a $36M cap hit. How would that make any sense? We likely roll a lot of savings from this year into next year to help cover the 2024 cap hit and we would restructure everyone possible in 2025 to offset it. 100% a horrible situation but much better than giving him $200M IF (don't ignore the word "if" when reading this) we decide he isn't our QB any longer at that point.

I think you’re missing my point. My point is Dak will definitely be on the roster in 2025. He can throw more picks than TD’s next season and he’ll still be here. The financial implications of moving on are too steep.

Soonest we see a different starter in Dallas is 2026 and that’s if they’re able to get away with a 1 year extension. If Dak has a bad year, he won’t have a choice really.

They restructured him to lower his cap hit by over $20 million this year. But in doing so they increased his cap hit in 2024 by over $10 million.

Releasing him after 2023 would produce a $61 million dead cap hit in 2024. They are not going to eat that. They'll just restructure him again.

Getting out of his original contract is just not that easy, unfortunately.

There’s no reason to extend him this off-season. An extension could happen anytime before his cap # hits the books in the future.

That said, if he plays as poorly or worse this season, no matter what the team does, it might be time to move on. I’m a big Dak fan, but last season was the only bad season I’ve seen. Another bad season is a problem.
However, one can dream that even those who hate him would cross their fingers and hope he has a great year and we go deeper in the playoffs. I think a few will, but some are already on record hoping we are awful. They hate him that badly.

I'm not about to gloat over beating the most epically bad playoff team ever.

EVER. So bad...many want to abolish the automatic bid. Then,,, pooping the bed against the same team two years in a row? Not something to brag about...but...carry on then.

As far as his football career goes Dak has to be the luckiest guy to ever play in the NFL.

He started, by default, in a dream situation. Somehow got one of the most lucrative deals in NFL QB history while coming off a very serious injury.

Now, when the team finally has a very competitive defense, giving them the best chance to go somewhere in over a quarter century, he has the team by the short hairs if they want to maximize the window this defense should provide.

One thing is certain. The next 2 to 3 years will define Dak's legacy.
