Its an act people are supposed to do, but it seems today they rarely do. From his biography on ESPN his mom was a big part of his life and really brought him up well until the day she passed. I did not know he had received his masters degree until recently and when he turned down endorsements and going to a concert earlier in the year during the bye week to stay home and chill really impressed me. Good kid, he has a future in life beyond football.

That is awesome. Those things DO matter.

Now can he please work on the hand-offs to Zeke. He keeps sticking them in his throat.

To me, this isn't so much "praising" him for getting up and throwing the cup away. That doesn't make someone a great person. So it isn't about calling him a great guy for throwing the cup away. It's just pointing out that him getting up to throw the cup away, at the end of a game, isn't insignificant. It speaks to his attention to detail and the intricacies of his character.

I agree with him. It's all about his emotional IQ and how much he respects those around him. A person who is self absorbed wouldn't care that they missed the can. Like he said....someone would pick it up. But why should they have to? Why is he any better than anyone else? That is what makes leaders. It's being willing to do whatever it takes and recognizing that with the exceptions of the right kind of luck and talent that he might be the guy picking up the trash at the end of the game. In other words....none of us are better than anyone of of us. And people who really know that are more successful in the end.

I wish i could give this more likes.

2. Dak Prescott, QB, Cowboys
One might look at Dak Prescott’s two total interceptions this season and assume he’s been an ultra-conservative game manager. That couldn’t be further from the truth, as Prescott is also third in the league in yards per attempt (8.2). The rookie out of Mississippi State continues taking calculated shots down the field, completing 57.3 percent of his targets over 10 yards this season. To put that in perspective, Matt Cassel completed 58.3 percent of all his passes a season ago. The Cowboys are in good hands.

I noticed the same thing!!! Dak was raised properly by his mother. He graduated Miss. State with a bachelor's and masters degrees. He is repectful and thoughtful. Much more mature than his age.

We should all be thankful for him and what he has brought to the team.

Agreed. Not only as a football player, but as a man.

Really goes to show how much good character is undervalued by NFL prospect evaluators.

Keep in mind that people that don't have respect and that would not pick up the cup are not going to understand the importance of what he did.

Thank you for a dose of perspective. I was thinking i could not explain this accurately.

Prescott, a regular participant in the locker room laundry-bin basketball games, was asked if he was disappointed he had missed the shot with the paper cup.

“I mean, I don’t shoot behind my back too much,” Prescott said. “I think the garbage can was kind of behind me. It was a little flip back. It still had some ice in it, so it threw off the rotation. Yeah…”

Prescott said the state’s “Don’t Mess with Texas” campaign has yet to reach out to him.

Really goes to show how much good character is undervalued by NFL prospect evaluators.

Yes I have to wonder more each day how Dak was undervalued by all the teams scouts, gm's, owners, everyone.
even the cowboys undervalued him, but they did take him before anyone else did.

I wonder if cowboys got lynch, would any of the other teams even drafted Dak ??
he might have been a 6th or 7th round pick, or udfa, who never got to play, and just wound up out of football !

I kinda think other potentially good to great players are missed like this every year.

good character is undervalued by NFL prospect evaluators........ they like the weed smoking guys who put up big
college stats?
but really it is a mystery how everyone didnt take the time to look into this guy deeper than his game play.
The cowboys got to coach senior bowl and that helped, but I think they had already noticed him ??

Anyway glad we got him and he wound up getting the chance to start game one, it was all sort of weird how
that came to happen, but it did and here we are at 9-1.

The problem with all the character talk is that there have been about 1,000,000 guys who have good character that crapped out at the NFL level. Also, people are forgetting that Dak fell at least in part because of a character red flag - his DUI (which got overturned, but nobody knew that would happen at the time.)

Over-emphasizing character over talent also leads to super dumb decisions, like taking Greg Ellis instead of Randy Moss, or Todd Blackledge instead of Dan Marino.

Unless a guy is just aggressively stupid, it's very hard to judge their mental make-up. Tom Brady is actually kinda transparently dumb at everything but playing quarterback, for instance, while Ryan Fitzpatrick is super smart and has a Wonderlic score normally associated with comic book supervillains that build giant killer robots, but he can't resist lofting passes in the direction of opposing cornerbacks every week. Tim Tebow was supposed to be the ultimate conscientious hard worker, but he never learned a single beepin' thing at the NFL level beyond what he was already doing in college.

The whole process is very much an inexact science.

Wentz might well have had a bucket sitting atop his lap to make absolutely sure he couldn't miss. ;)

Watching the game yesterday, there were alot of things to be impressed about Dak's performance and his season overall. He didn't turn the ball over, didn't panic in the face of early tough sledding, through three touchdowns to help lead the team to victory, went on a high percentage tear in the second half, played with poise and enthusiasm, took some hits and kept coming, and looks to be a bright star for a decade to come.

Strangely, the old-man-on-the-lawn in me was most impressed by something else. On the sideline, the national telecast cut to Dak sitting alone on the bench, he took a sip of Gatorade, and chucked the cup at the trash.

He missed.

He looked back to it, saw he missed it, got up, walked over, and put it in the trash, came and sat back down.

THAT impressed me. He took responsibility. He owns his role. Didn't expect anyone else to clean up his mess. Didn't wait for someone else to make it happen. A place for everything and everything in it's place. Attention to detail. Getting it done right.

Like this kid, like him alot... he needs to just stay off my lawn.
OMG!!!
that impressed me more then (his) entire game
I agree with you

It's weird I finally checked out this thread. I just watched the game the other day and noticed this too! I'm not going to pretend that this has something to do with his ability to play football at a high level. It may or may not have contributed to it. That said, when I saw him look back and then went to pick it up, I thought to myself, "Damn, that's a good person who was raised well!". It just makes me root for the guy even harder. The youths today has me scratching my head. All the expletives spewing from their mouths and the lack of regard for others. Too many times, I've seen them chucking garbage to the ground with a trash can not too far away. Dak picking up his trash may only be a small thing for many but to me, it resonates much more.

Good post. It's amazing how the timing worked perfect for Dak so far. He does add a lot of talent and character to the cause but you raise some valid points as far as being in the right place in the right time. Reminds me of the Outliers book, and how so many successful people thank their lucky stars for their success.
Tiiming is everything. Imagine how Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook feel? We know it's eating at Tony Romo. They all could be here and be riding this thing right now. Not taking anything away from Dak, but to have the best RB & OL in the league is his biggest competitive advantage.

If it was Goff, he has an excuse for missing the garbage can, because the cup was probably wet and he is not use to throwing things that are wet (i.e. Wet football).

yeah Dak has had some good luck, first cowboys did draft him , and it was the team he most wanted to play for.
Then kellen gets hurt, and he is # 2, then tony hurt, and he is # 1 temporarily, then he had this opportunity,
and he went all in and made the most of it, and has also had some luck in the games, and here he is now @ 9-1 and a top rated qb.

I think Dak did more with this than tony or conner, or lynch would have done with it, just my opinion.
They might have done good but not this good.
Goff is a joke , I dont see how he was rated so highly. Wentz looks good, but not as good as Dak.
