Dak reminds me of a young Don Meredith

All this hand wringing about our QB needs to simmer down

Back when I was about 14 and first started following the team..

Jerry Rhome was the QB and they had just drafted Don Meredith.

Dandy Don was a running, scrambling QB that could produce big plays..

but was just as likely to throw an interception to beat you.

He went on to have the Cowboys in the NFC Championship in '66 & '67.

But he had tremendous ups and downs along the way.

This is very much the way we are experiencing DAK.

He can take you downfield on one drive and on the next drive..

fumble it inside his own 20.

But as Don played..he got better.

This next 4 games is vitally important to DAK and our team and we will not get there unless DAK continues to play well.

So hopefully DAK takes advantage of his opportunity to overcome last year's down year and get us back where we need to be.

I never saw Dandy Don play. I started watching the Cowboys with Roger Staubach. I remember hearing my dad talk about Don and how much he liked him. Don was a try-hard type of guy with a big personality. I really enjoyed Don on Monday Night Football. He was entertaining and well liked by his peers. Dak also appears to be well liked by his peers. All of the talk about Dak has been over the top and on the verge of ludicrous and maybe even insanity. If Dak can carry the team to the championship, I will be happy with the team. I really believe this team will win a Superbowl. My question for everyone is this: will a Superbowl appearance or victory squash the Dak hate?

I know Dak has to protect the ball better, I get that. However, the man has won a lot of games for the boys. He gives me hope during each game. He beat Tony out of a job because he is a winner. Dak is special. I remember the biggest knock on Staubach and Dorsett were they would fumble. I still loved watching those two play just as enjoy watching Dak. No one is perfect.

The problem is this isn't the 60's, and the 13 points scored against the Saints (zero in the second half) will beat very few teams. Let's not forget Dak's fumble at a critical moment, that could have easily cost the Cowboys a hard earned win.

Not sure if Meredith would have the same success today, but who knows. At least the team is playing with renewed confidence.

My guess is no, but not all the problems with the offense fall on Dak. I remember Dandy Don. I don't see too many similarities, but I would be happy if Dak matured into another Meredith.

I disagree. Even when Dak plays well he still gets criticized. He gets sacked when it's not his fault but still gets blamed for it. The list goes on. Some may stop with the bashing but if Dak wins a Superbowl the majority of his haters will still complain about him

FWIW, I agree with the OP on the comparison... Dandy may have never won us the big one during his tenure, but he was super talented and I'll always remember his final couple years with him and Bob Hayes lighting up the field. Good times

and Bobby Hayes at WR.

When Meredith would throw to Hayes..

the entire Cotton Bowl would jump to it's feet to see.

I was not that tall so would miss the end of the play.

But I knew what happened as everybody around us started screaming and jumping up and down and shaking hands.

You would think so but in dandy don’s case it wasn’t true. I know he never brought home the super bowl trophy but he did get to the nfc championship game twice and played heroically in the ice bowl.
He was booed out of the sport and into the booth.
