Dak tells Pickens to bet on himself

Dak knows how to beat Jerry. Wait him out and Jerry will always back himself into a corner.

That’s easy to say as a QB. As a receiver you get hurt you’re cooked.
Yep, the players union really needs to work out a compensation plan with the league regarding tagged players and injuries and payouts by the team that don't effect the cap!

Dak should give up some guarantees if he wants Pickens to sign

Dak played on 2 tags which is why we are stuck with the worst QB contract in the NFL. We had to sign him for what he wanted or he could have walked for nothing. Thats the corner Jerry backed himself into.
They definitely waited too long on the first contract and they ended up costing themselves more money delaying a deal. The 2nd they could have let him play out his final year, but they ended up extending him and he went on to play his worst season and got injured before rebounding this season. I dont think he would have gotten 60 million a year after his 2024 season. He's technically played under the franchise tag once, but regardless the Cowboys could have managed this contract better.

I still really think the Cowboys pissed off Dak earlier in his career around negotiations and letting him play out on cheaper contracts so Dak is trying to squeeze out every penny now.

Well, certainly not right now. He’ll play on the tag or be traded.
do they think because they can make all this cap space that we can just use it like this and take a 28 million cap hit? We could use that money elsewhere if they'd just extend him.

Jerry said it himself in a bus interview. Didn’t you watch those?
I usually do not listen to Jerry, except for some clips I may watch on here.

Also, does anyone truly believe what Jerry says?
I believe he says stuff to throw people off and probably does not remember half of what he says.

That’s the reason to extend him. They don’t want to commit any more than they have to beyond this year.

Jerry liked to keep his money liquid.

Well, that’s where he said they didn’t even touch on a long term negotiation and simply informed him he was going to be on the tag.

I stated this and you said I had no idea if anything was discussed.

I provided the source, Jerry himself, and you said he can’t be trusted.

You can’t deny he said something and then discount it when the words were his own and on video.

one day that liquid money is going to dry up and he won't be able to handle life!!!

Franchise tags, historically, work for Quarterbacks. It’s everyone else where it’s much more risky and less likely to work in their favor.

You provided he said that only in a post. Where is the link, that is the proof.
I can say Jerry said something as well, and provide no link.

Wish I was cool to do that with no link, my post may actually vanish!!!!

Well yes the Cowboys being stupid is also a part of the equation lol.

I just don't really think playing on the tag is the same as betting on yourself.
It is the same.

Pickens has to bet on himself and show he's not a one year wonder. It's why the Cowboys are willing to let him play on the tag this year and then decide whether or not he's worth a long term deal in 2027. Let's make sure last year wasn't an outlier. If Pickens slides back and catches 55 passes for 800 yards and three touchdowns next year, is any team paying him $30 million APY long term?

And if another team wants to move in and sign Pickens now, the Cowboys get significant draft compensation.

it's exactly why he should force them to pay based on the season he just came off of, don't take less, they don't want to pay you, say you want to be traded!!!!!!!! Numbers just aren't working!

If Pickens believes he's not a one-year wonder, he should be maximizing guarantees by signing his second UFA contract as soon as possible, even if that means taking a bit less than he would get as a UFA.

Playing a year on the tag costs players cash, especially when they are still young. For example, with rough APY numbers, here could be his next six years:

W/ Tag: 28 - 40 - 40 - 40 - 50 - 50 ($248m)
Without: 37 - 37 - 37 - 50 - 50 - 50 ($261m)

This is why Dallas loves the tag. For Pickens, his best odds to make more money are by signing right now at a slight discount so he can get to his next contract faster. That's what I mean by he'd be betting on himself. If Dallas is being dumb and offering something like $25m, then he should just hold out.

Betting on himself would be signing now and then cashing in again in 3 years, imo.

All that Pickens can do on the tag is lose leverage. Sign your ~4x$150m deal now and then get your extension after year three or go UFA at age 29 to get your second $150m+ deal.
I can guarantee you this—Dallas is not paying that man $37.5 million with Lamb already on the roster at $34 million. It’s not happening. He can seek a trade elsewhere, and in three years find a new deal, because I don’t think the Cowboys will even bother going through with it.

That’s why they tagged him—he’ll negotiate, price himself out, and I don’t blame Jerry for not paying that. It’s insane. A team without a true number one receiver, like we were in 2018, can offer a couple of firsts or a first and a third, and see where it goes. I wouldn’t pay him that either. Dallas’s situation is different from a team desperate for a receiver. New England’s cutting Diggs; they don’t have a guy.

Anyone thinking that’s his market in Dallas is delusional. If it gets over $32 million, Jerry won’t keep him—he’s not paying him more than Lamb. There’s no other roster in the NFL with two $34 million receivers for good reason.

I like George, but if that’s what he’s pushing, he’s not staying in Dallas.

The Cowboys will thrive with the compensation we get, turning it into another receiver in the draft. You can find a veteran for $15-17 million, like Seattle did. New England didn’t have two guys like that in the Super Bowl—at least not on those terms.

The Cowboys have too many holes to be paying a guy $37.5 million. Not happening in Dallas.

Maybe three teams out there might do it but making him the highest-paid receiver in the league isn’t happening for a team that already has a clear number one on a big contract. I’d rather take a guy like Stefon Diggs.

I mean this this could be a lot easier negotiating, if this is what David and George stated really what the number is,

if they want a market setting deal, if they want to be top three type deal, they should just say it now,

that they're not going to negotiate, Just tell Jerry the number now, and say we're not moving off it ,and then let's go ahead and get this heated up and find a trade and get him on out of here before the draft.

so, we don't go through the whole offseason like we did with Parsons last year, just state your damn intentions without the games.
