Exactly my thinking as well. Miami, Cleveland, and Arizona will be in competition for top spot in the Arch Manning sweepstakes - or any top QB that emerges in next year's draft. Bringing in Milton may jeopardize that if he plays well enough to win them a handful of games.

Dak was never threatened by any QB the cowboys brought in. Dudes making top QB money, that along buys him grace even if he has a down year or another injury. But moreover we know with a healthy Dak this offense is a juggernaut to deal with and that sells which is what Jerry cares about.

I think they were hoping Milton would progress to a capable QB. It's so hard to find one. No guarantee a 1st rounder will even be decent.

The point is that to interested observers - the football press, coaches, former players, etc. - Milton's play looked good. Not just in the preseason games, but also in camp as well. Bobby Belt - who defended the Cowboys move and Howell being #2 - kept reporting that Howell was dinking and dunking in practice. Maybe that's what they called for...I don't know. But as you just said, it wasn't the eye test that did it...it was "experience" or other factors. Fair enough, but don't tell me he was outplayed this preseason. Ball don't lie.

If Trent Green Doesn't have a season ending injury, when does Dick Vermeil figure out the better QB is on the bench? Not through practice.

If Drew Bledsoe doesn't get injured, when does Belichick figure out the better QB is on the bench? Not through preseason and practice.

Flawed as it is, it's the only real way you keep a Kurt Warner or Tom Brady. So while they don't "matter" In the regular season real world, they do determine the fate of a good chunk of a team's roster. Milton balled out in that environment after looking shaky a year earlier. 2nd year in a system, maturity, obscene raw skills...this is the kind of player that normally gets more investment.

Right. Preseason can get you a spot on the team. That's about as far as it goes these days. Where preseason does matter is if you crap the bed. If you look bad in preseason, you're pretty much done.

If I were running the Jets or Miami I absolutely would have signed him.

Haven't read all the posts yet, but that is a NO if I am either of those teams. They are in or will be in shutdown mode right out of the gate, looking for their next franchise QB in the draft. If Milton is anything like what some on here think, you don't want to have to play him and win a game, screwing up any chance to snag one of the QB's

Give teams 3 or 4 weeks. Or longer. If a QB goes down and they figure out they need a better backup. Or a back up to their back up. They may try to get Milton off our PS.

I agree real games are the ultimate test but they figured out thru practice who to keep developing.

Your examples are why I laugh when some posters trot out "the experts" know better flex.

Rest of the NFL was not impressed. Very small sample against CBs who can't cover.

Wasn’t Sam Howell going up against the same type of players. And by any statistical analysis Milton’s #’s were better .
