Let’s say Dak continues to play at or a bit above the level we have seen from him the last two weeks. How will that affect his contract situation in the offseason? It appears that Dak is a game manager. Nothing really wrong with that. Game managers have won superbowls before with the right pieces around them.
At this point, in my opinion he hasn’t played well enough to deserve a new deal. I say we make him play out his rookie 4th year deal and sign either a solid WR or TE in free agency next off season and go with the best WR or TE (depending who is signed in Free Agency) in the 1st round of the 2019 draft and worry about his contract after the 2019 season to give him more weapons and have a better idea on what kind of QB he is.
However, should a new deal come to fruition in the upcoming offseason, his deal should reflect that of a game manager only. I wouldn’t mind giving him a 3 year contract worth abase value of $57 million and up to a total of 69.5 million with incentives. A deal very similar to the one Blake Bortles received. He’s only counting 10 million towards the Jaguars cap this year. We would have an average QB who has the ability to run and make throws when he has time and some extra cap space to give Dlawrnece a long term deal, bring in Earl Thomas (should he become a free agent) and sign a solid WR or TE in the 2019 offseason.
A QB in round 1 or 2 within the next two drafts need to be taken regardless of Dak’s performance this season. A decent back-up is still a great need.
Cap experts, what do you guys suggest be done about Dak’s new deal and how should his contract situation be handled moving forward? What is a fair deal to make where Dak gets what he deserves and the team does not have to allocate a significant portion of their cap on a QB who has yet to find his identity? How should the front office handle this situation that would be in the best interest of this franchise for the next few years? Could prolonging a deal affect Dak’s feelings of wanting to stay in Dallas and raise his price up more should he have a similar year in 2019 that he had in 2016 and jeopardize securing him for a long term deal?
It is early to begin talking about Dak's contract situation, but this is a very complicated situation. I would think these are the types of discussions the front office are having right now.
