Let’s say Dak continues to play at or a bit above the level we have seen from him the last two weeks. How will that affect his contract situation in the offseason? It appears that Dak is a game manager. Nothing really wrong with that. Game managers have won superbowls before with the right pieces around them.

At this point, in my opinion he hasn’t played well enough to deserve a new deal. I say we make him play out his rookie 4th year deal and sign either a solid WR or TE in free agency next off season and go with the best WR or TE (depending who is signed in Free Agency) in the 1st round of the 2019 draft and worry about his contract after the 2019 season to give him more weapons and have a better idea on what kind of QB he is.

However, should a new deal come to fruition in the upcoming offseason, his deal should reflect that of a game manager only. I wouldn’t mind giving him a 3 year contract worth abase value of $57 million and up to a total of 69.5 million with incentives. A deal very similar to the one Blake Bortles received. He’s only counting 10 million towards the Jaguars cap this year. We would have an average QB who has the ability to run and make throws when he has time and some extra cap space to give Dlawrnece a long term deal, bring in Earl Thomas (should he become a free agent) and sign a solid WR or TE in the 2019 offseason.

A QB in round 1 or 2 within the next two drafts need to be taken regardless of Dak’s performance this season. A decent back-up is still a great need.

Cap experts, what do you guys suggest be done about Dak’s new deal and how should his contract situation be handled moving forward? What is a fair deal to make where Dak gets what he deserves and the team does not have to allocate a significant portion of their cap on a QB who has yet to find his identity? How should the front office handle this situation that would be in the best interest of this franchise for the next few years? Could prolonging a deal affect Dak’s feelings of wanting to stay in Dallas and raise his price up more should he have a similar year in 2019 that he had in 2016 and jeopardize securing him for a long term deal?

It is early to begin talking about Dak's contract situation, but this is a very complicated situation. I would think these are the types of discussions the front office are having right now.

One of the advantages of being QB of the Dallas Cowboys, is it automatically gets you money in endorsements. Dak signed more endorsements deals of any NFL player in 2017. So even if a QB gets less money offered as a a DC, it’s only part of the equation. He was also the third highest player in licensing royalties next to Brady and Elliot last year.

If Dallas is smart, they shouldn’t be in any rush, especially if he’s playing pretty average.

I was gonna say he must be making bank from the Oikos and Pepsi deals among others.

Romo also did great with endorsements his career and still is.... those corona commercials are great.

Dak is getting a TON off of Jersey Sales. He wouldn't get that anywhere else. Dallas knows this.

If Dak gets extended/re-signed, he’ll get a $$$$ deal, as that will indicate the Cowboys see him being the long-term franchise QB. He’s not gonna be kept here as the backup.

If they somehow(?) don’t re-sign him, then they’ll obviously be looking to go in another direction.

I wouldn’t worry about it now; rather see how this season plays out.

Right, and I believe Dak is a reasonable guy and will not become greedy.

But he did change agents this last off season and they are all about getting top dollar for their clients. That could pose some problems when it comes to contract negotiations.

The problem is that Jerry is convinced that Dak is a franchise QB, even though there is not enough evidence of this.

So Jerry is going to pay him. Rodgers is the ceiling and he won't get near that. But he's looking at $20-$25M a year depending on if Dak agrees to a hometown discount.

Many here think he shouldn't get a new deal at all. But it doesn't matter what we think. Jerry think he has a hybrid of Cam Newton and Jared Goff, as silly as that sounds.

So he will get paid, for better or for worse.

Taking a QB with a high pick at this point would be completely stupid. Despite the fact that haters like you decided in only his first two years that he wasn't any good.

There is not enough evidence to make any franchise call on Dak yet. Despite that a few Romo cry babies think they know. We still have two more years for him to grow and evaluate before he gets a new contract.

I'm calling him a game manager and totally open to keeping him at the right price. Not hating on him at all, but his performance over the last 8 or 9 games do not make me feel confident in him to carry an offense.

And I was saying we need to take a qb early to address the back up qb position.

The QB situation behind Dak is not promising at all and if Dak goes down I dont see any of them having the talent to win.

Don't have to pay him until 2020. If he doesn't come around, just draft somebody, franchise Dak in 2020, then cut him loose.

You're covered for three years.

If Mike White is good, even quicker.

But the preferable case is that Dak comes around and is the guy.

False. If Dak plays average, you need to extend him for three or four years at a reasonable rate. The going rate for his should be Blake Bortles money.

Give him an escalator if he wins the super bowl etc. He will take it and continue to improve and it will be a bargain.

Meanwhile you spend a reasonably high pick (3rdish) on a QB if the opportunity presents itself and develop him. I don't think White is the answer. Rush sure isn't.

Not even thinking about his contract situation until after this season. The answer should be clear at that point, if it isn't already.
