Almost any comprehensive passing stat yields a very high correlation to winning. Personally, I use an ANYPA formula that includes net passing yards, interceptions, attempts and sacks -- (net passing yards - (50 * INT) / (attempts + sacks). Other people use Pro Football Reference's ANYPA stat or simple YPA or NYA or passer rating or QBR. Pick one -- the team that is better at it during a game almost always wins that game.

So far this season, the teams that pass more effectively are 31-1 -- with the only loss being the Ravens losing to the Raiders on a TD pass with 26 seconds left.

IRVING, Texas -- Coach Jason Garrett insists the Dallas Cowboys' commitment to running the ball hasn’t changed, despite Tony Romo's 45 passes in Week 1.

He points to Joseph Randle's 16 carries -- none in the fourth quarter -- and the inordinate amount of time the Cowboys spent in their two-minute offense as evidence the Cowboys’ philosophical approach hasn’t changed.

What does that have to do with anything I said?

If you pass more effectively than your opponent, you'll almost always win. It's that way for Brady, Wilson, Roethlisberger, Romo and any other quarterback in the NFL. It doesn't matter what scheme you use or how often you pass or how often you run or how well you run or how well you stop the run. Just pass more effectively, however you do it.

You're right, it's just a coincidence that the team that passes more effectively wins about 80 percent of the time in the NFL -- and has won the past 24 games we've played. Doesn't mean anything at all.
