Dallas coach Jason Garrett says run-first mentality will remain

IRVING, Texas -- Coach Jason Garrett insists the Dallas Cowboys' commitment to running the ball hasn’t changed, despite Tony Romo's 45 passes in Week 1.

He points to Joseph Randle's 16 carries -- none in the fourth quarter -- and the inordinate amount of time the Cowboys spent in their two-minute offense as evidence the Cowboys’ philosophical approach hasn’t changed.

Good, because Romo throwing the ball more than 40 times is typically a losing number. The Cowboys are 11-17, when he throws more than 40 passes in a game, and 21-32 when he throws more than 35 passes in a game.

The Cowboys won 12 games last season and the NFC East title because of their run-first identity. They were a physical team that systematically wore down their opponents...

The passing numbers are skewed because how the game unfolded. During the 3 minute drill at the end of the 2nd quarter Romo was 4 for 4 and then the Beasley fumble happened. The next play was intercepted. 5 straight passes to end of the half (7 if you include the drive before the 3 minute drill).

The last two drives of the game, when Dallas was down 10 with less than 8 minutes left, they needed to score quickly so they had to throw the ball. Romo was 11/12 and had 2 TDs including the game winner to Witten.

The rest of the game Dallas had 27 passes and 22 runs. Included in those passes were screens which do similar things, especially RB screens, as a run play. Dallas will continue to run the ball but with the turnovers during the game they had to adjust.

Well well welll......It seems the Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys agrees. We need to run the ball.........

Those "extension of the run" dink and dunks to the RBs, count as.......................Passing attempts! Start getting over 40 attemtpts and bad things happen in the game and to the win loss record!!!

I think Joe Randle hits a hundred this week, and maybe with a few TDS.....

I think C-Mike is going to get his chance.

I think we will return to running the football..... even when were down by 6 points....:)

The coaches cant be that obtuse to not realize we looked like the 2013 version of the cowboys. Randle/DMAC/Cmike can get it done!!! We just need to stick with it!

Sigh. When you throw 40+ passes, it's usually because you're playing from behind. When you run 30+ times, it's usually because you're NOT playing from behind.

Yes, the Cowboys want to be a run-first team. But the 2014 Cowboys were able to maintain their run-first identity because they were winning games, not the other way around.

Romo CANNOT hold the ball too long.

They will hurt him. That's their unspoken bounty gate.

Handoff and short passes to Witten and Beasley.

Actaully they were down in many games and continued to run. And being down 10 points isnt exactly cause to abandon the run!!

It was the 2013 offense of Romo playing sandlot football that won the game. This team doesn't resemble last year in the least. It felt like Romo was in shotgun more than last year? Romo has the skills to win this way, but the formula isn't as sustainable as seen with that 11-17 record.

It was also that 2013 sandlot football which lost 8 games. Dont fool yourself. We could easily be setting here at 0-1. Porbably should be.

How often did we run the ball on 3rd and short?

It remains to be seen whether the Cowboys can protect a lead in the 4th quarter by pounding the ball, eating the clock, and limiting the opponent's opportunities.

That's what helped the Cowboys win. When team has to pass to keep drives going with a 4th quarter lead it is far riskier and less effective. There is a higher probability of turnovers and passing will slow down the clock.

Oh I am in agreement with ya. Just bc Romo has the talent to pull off these last second heroics, doesn't mean it's a sustainable formula by any measure. Especially against a team with a real D.

yeah. I am glad its there.....! And it makes for great TV. And we can always fall back to it...... But I would like to see those Rushing Attempts move up. Even more so then what we did last year!!

i think were going to pound the ball this Week. And if we cant..... then, yeah, Romo will have to do it...dinks and dunks.....and fingers crossed someone doesnt get whacked when catching the ball...

In order for the run first mentality or grind it out game plan to work or at least respected and relevant; we need one of our rbs to provide that extra push when we need it the most. Who can do that? That is yet to be seen. Atm, I think defense will game plan against the screen and passes to our rbs until we get the ground game going.

I hope it remains in the redzone. Why we abandoned the run on the first drive once we hit the redzone floors me. I love empty backfield in the 20s, but when you're in the redzone you are allowing the defense heavy advantage. At least pass with with a backfield.

Redball must have asked Linehan first, because Jason Garrett doesn't run the Offense or make the play calls and when he did, we sucked.

This is incredibly simple to see, but most people will gloss over that fact.

AdamJT...pointed out that during the Giants game, the team actually ran at last season's pace for the first three quarters. Only when the point differential warranted more passing, did the run get second hand treatment. (4th quarter)

@AdamJT13 is a pretty smart guy. They were left with very little choice but to throw the ball at that point. If they are up by 3 TDs like they should have been, Romo probably doesn't throw the ball more than 30 times again.
