Some of you Veteran Cowboy Fans may know ...approximately what percentage of Houston Oiler Fans became Dallas Cowboy Fans.

Discussion:

When the Oilers became non-existent, the Cowboys became the only franchise to represent the State of Texas. While I'm sure there's a minority of football fans that just stopped participating, do you believe that the majority of these fans changed there allegiance and became Dallas Cowboy fans?

Are there any such migrated fans here that can discuss that transition? Probably would be too ambitious to assume that a Houston Texan fans are here at the Zone, but would love to hear about that experience. Because I believe there was a significant period of time between the Oilers termination and establishment of the Texans.

Now here’s another component of this thread that I'd like to ask of Cowboy fans ...if the Cowboys franchise were to end, would you become Texan fans. If not, why not. Also if not, then with whom would you shift your allegiance?

One last question ...Are there any Houston Oiler fans out there?

I would say that most of the Oilers fans simply followed their team to Tennessee and are now Titans fans.

I don't believe the Cowboys picked up many Oilers fans after they left Texas.

And in this fans' opinion, the Cowboys are the NFL and there is simply no chance that there will ever be an NFL without America's Team!

What I encounted when the Oilers left Houston was their fans just pulled aginst Dallas. There may have been a small handful of people who became Dallas fans but most continued to pull aginst Dallas not for them. As for the last part of your question no don't think I could not bring myself to pull for the Texans, call it a habit after years of bad experiances with Houston football fans.

I have family in Houston and they are NOT Cowboys fans. They have hated the Cowboys for decades and will not change that opinion. After the Oilers abandoned them they followed them in Tennessee until they changed their name to the Titans. After that they sorta watched the Saints and a few other teams until the Texans came along. But there was no way in Hell they would become Cowboys fans. I think this is pretty typical of the old Oilers fans.

AS for me I would probably go through the same thing if the Cowboys left Texas. I'm a Texan first and will only root for Texas teams...so I guess I would switch to the Texans. Of course I don't hate the Texans the way my family down there hate the Cowboys.

That's an Interesting comment ...are you basing that on personal knowledge; if not, then what?

I'm not from Texas, I'd probably end up being a Dolphins fan, since my wife likes them so much. The NFL couldn't exist without it's marquis franchise, though. It might could do without one of those pathetic franchises who have never "made" it, but not the Cowboys.

It is because you don't live down here. :laugh2: It is not just your family, sports radio is very strongly aginst the Cowboys. Hang around some Houston football fans long enough and you learn quickly how to hate them. When I 1st moved to Houston I pulled for the Oilers after all they were an AFC team and the local team although Cowboys were 1st in my book, after a short time of hearing "If you like Dallas so much why don't you move there" it was easy to dislike them.

I'm comprehending you as perhaps suggesting that Houston Oilers fans are playing out their hurt and anomosity by therapeutically venting their anguish and frustration against the Dallas Cowboys?

He is right, many of the Oiler fans became Tenn fans after all the players on the teams had become fan favorites. Some still continue to pull for the Titans but for the most part they are now Texan fans

Oh and one other thing. The fact that the Texans beat the Cowboys in their first ever regular season game brought just about all of the old Oilers fans into the fold. I think the hated the Cowboys more than they ever loved the Oilers. They have some serious issues down there in Houston ;)

Got it. My son is a die-hard Dolphins fan right now. He went crazy (not literally) when Culpepper came to Miami. I tease Him about vicky (Ricky WIlliams) all the time.:D

So eloquently put! I might add that the bold portion of your post is actually FACT not fiction.

You have to understand the animosity between the 2 cities and it really goes beyond just football. Houston is considered a blue collar city while Dallas is looked at as more of a white collar city. When it comes to football Dallas Cowboys have been out front in the lime light not just across the state but nationally while Houston has been the ugly step sister who rarely gets much attention.

Ok, but I'm sure that there were some fans who Liked both the Cowboys and the Oilers. Do you think the fanbase dropped with the Oilers demise?

Would you say that the Texans are the strongest non-divisional rivalry of the Cowboys for that reason; if not that then what?

Phoenix-Talon, I'm sure you've answered this before, but...

Why are you here? And do you post at Iggles boards? I just can't imagine being a fan of the Cowboys and bothering to spend time at another team's board.

And if the Cowboys were to go away, I believe I would become a Chiefs fan. At least they were originally from Dallas...

I think the only people who liked both teams were people like me who were diehard Cowboys fans and kinda had good wishes for the Oilers. I don't think I have ever meet a true Oilers fan who had a warm wish for the Cowboys. BTW I'm the same way about the Texans; I want to see them do well as long as it is not at the Cowboys expense.

I'm a huge homer. If the Cowboys were to move I would be come so extremely anti-Cowboys that I would be the primary fan of any team playing against the Cowboys from week to week. [SIZE=-1]I'm not even a Browns fan, but I consider Art Modell the Anti-Christ.

The Oilers, Rams, Cardinals, Colts, etc have moved, but I believe most had a valid reason to move. Art Modell on the other hand didn't besides his complete mismanagement of the team. He was just upset with the City of Cleveland not approving him a new stadium and with his ultra ego he just dumped on the fans of their franchise. (for the most part anyway) Moving the team after 49 years in Cleveland. (1946-1995)

I'm sure I would lose a lot of interest in the NFL. I wouldn't give it up completely, but I wouldn't be as rabid as I am now and the extreme excitment I get leading up to the season would be gone. I would probably switch to the Giants. I've always had a tree of following. Cowboys->NFC East->NFC. (Though, I've always been a Commander hater and that will never change!)

I know very few who like both, kind of like finding a person who is a Longhorns fan and an Aggie fan there are some not many. I think the fan base in Houston has always been here and demise of the Oilers had to do more with local politics than it did fan support. The Mayor of Houston did not like Bud Adams and refused to have any part in building a new stadium so Bud packed up and left. Now a new owner comes to town and guess what we build that same stadium Bud Adams wanted all along.
