Dallas Cowboy Fans ...by way of the Houston Oilers

My mom's from Texas. My dad met her at Ft. Hood. They raised me as a Cowboys fan although I've never lived in the city and have only visited Texas Stadium once (Thanksgiving will be the second). I'm born and raised in Tampa.

I don't know how I could manage watching pro football without the Cowboys. I guess I'd have to start rooting for the Bucs like all the other bandwagoners here. That would suck.

You have to understand the animosity between the 2 cities and it really goes beyond just football. Houston is considered a blue collar city while Dallas is looked at as more of a white collar city. When it comes to football Dallas Cowboys have been out front in the lime light not just across the state but nationally while Houston has been the ugly step sister who rarely gets much attention.

Kinda like Pittsburgh and Philadelphia I guess.

That's too funny. I have thought the same thing and have even posted this on the Texans forums.

I've always been a Diehard Cowboys fan, but would cheer for the Oilers in their glory days of Campbell.

It wasn't until after going to their fourms, that I discovered that the Texans fans HATE the Dallas Cowboys. Don't know who hates us more, Philly or Houston?

After reading what the Texans have to say on their forums about the Cowboys, I don't think I can ever support the Texans now.

The few Oiler fans I know either followed the Titans and continue to be their fans or are now Texans fans. Don't know of any that became Cowboys fans.

Texans SUCK!!!!

Would you say that the Texans are the strongest non-divisional rivalry of the Cowboys for that reason; if not that then what?
From the Houston fan's perspective yes; the Cowboys are a huge rival. From the Dallas fan's perspective...the Texans are just another team. Their feelings about us are much stronger than our feelings about them.

I think the only people who liked both teams were people like me who were diehard Cowboys fans and kinda had good wishes for the Oilers. I don't think I have ever meet a true Oilers fan who had a warm wish for the Cowboys. BTW I'm the same way about the Texans; I want to see them do well as long as it is not at the Cowboys expense.
I'm one of those. I grew up in west Texas and I was an Dallas fan, but I followed the Oilers in the AFC. This was in the Dan Pastorini-Earl Campbell days. Oiler fans hate Dallas, but in my personal experience found Dallas fans generally liked the Oilers.

I live in Houston now and I work with many, ex-Oiler, Texan fans. They hate Dallas more than any other team in the league. A few of them are Titans fans and they don't like Dallas either. There are also some hybrid Texan/Titan fans, which doesn't make any sense.

In general Houstonians dislike Dallasites. Not just in sports, but the cities themselves.

That does shed some light on the situation. Thanks.

If the Dallas Cowboys folded, I would probably not watch much football from then on.

Phoenix-Talon, I'm sure you've answered this before, but...

Why are you here? And do you post at Iggles boards? I just can't imagine being a fan of the Cowboys and bothering to spend time at another team's board.

I really don't want to get off-topic because I'm involved in some real good dialogue about the Houston Oilers right Now, so here's just a snipet to respond to your question ...

The Psychology of an Eagles’ (Opponent) Fan's Perspective ...

My views will not always align with yours -- that's nothing more that a factual statement coming straight from Phoenix-Talon! I'm not targeting anyone or an fandom when I say that!

Let me try to extrapolate my position here at the Zone, by responding to several frequently asked questions.

Are you a troll?

Some might say that I’m a sophisticated troll, but that’s usually brought on after I’m engaged in a heated discussion with someone (while they are slinging personal insults, as I remain within the Zone guidelines). Besides, a troll is a troll regardless of how you try to dress it up. Trolls aren’t interested in your perspective or mine …they are usually disruptive at all costs.

The truth of the matter is that Phoenix-Talon has never been a troll. It’s extremely difficult to remain cool under fire, knowing that I place just as much restraint into refraining from allowing an uncontrolled retort/response …only to get pelted simultaneously by homegrown overzealous off-topic enthusiasts (for the lack of a better term).

What if the Objective of my Threads/Posts?

Engage in football-centered fun with opponent fans who usually provide stimulating arguments that justify their respective opinions.

I’m not trying to insult anyone personally. If you choose to be insulted on something said about a player (within reason) or any aspect of your fandom that is not directed toward you personally, that’s your choice. But you won’t ever catch Phoenix-Talon making a derogatory remark about you personally.

I like to obtain opinions from other than my own fandom sources. Realistically speaking, I view an opponent’s opinion (that would be your opinion in this case) very highly ...to be continued later.

The reason Oiler/Texan fans hate the Cowboys is the same reason the rest of the NFL world hates the Cowboys. The Cowboys were claimed as America's Team. They were bigger than life in the NFL and everyone holds animosity towards those that have what they do not. If you're driving a Honda Civic and your neighbour has a Porche Carrera, you're probably going to hate him.

Everyone hates the Cowboys because of who they are. The same reason everyone hates the Yankees.

I would say that most of the Oilers fans simply followed their team to Tennessee and are now Titans fans.

I don't believe the Cowboys picked up many Oilers fans after they left Texas.

And in this fans' opinion, the Cowboys are the NFL and there is simply no chance that there will ever be an NFL without America's Team!

:worthy2:

This is correct. Very few, if any, became Cowboys fans. "Houston Fan" hates the Cowboys more than the love their own team.

Many just followed the team to Tenn and there are still many Titans fans here in town.

I was a huge Oiler fan, had season tickets the whole bit. Like most Oiler fans, I hated the Cowboys with a passion at that time. When The Oilers moved to Tennessee, I wanted to hate them also. That was hard because I still knew and loved the players. Even so, I refused to follow the Oilers. About that same time the Carolina Panthers came into existence, so I tried to root for them but still found that difficult.

A year latter I moved to Dallas and was harassed by all my friends in Houston about becoming a Cowboys fan. I assured them I would never become a fan of the hated Cowboys.

Well, after about two years of living in a town where most things revolve around football and the Cowboys I started to become more familiar with the team. I found myself not rooting for them to lose, and slowly starting to root for them to win.

I learned that I am more of a fan of football than just a fan of one team. I played it, officiated it, and have watched it for years. So, I just made the transition to the team in the city I live in. I have taken a lot of crap from my friends in Houston, but I don’t care. I am a true Cowboys fan now.

Houston and Dallas are arch rivals. No one in one city would cheer for the other city.

I can't give you percentages like you want because I don't have much data. But I can tell you about my step-brother as a data point. He lived in Houston his whole life and was as much of an Oiler fan as a person could be.

When the Oilers left, he was devastated. He followed them the next couple of seasons in Tennessee and half-heartedly cheered for them while also being angry at the ownership. He quickly found he couldn't bring himself to care or support them. After their 2nd season there in Tennessee, he cut all ties with them.

He was extremely excited when the Texans came, and he is now a big Texans fan. I don't think he has the un-ending love for them like he used to have for the Oilers (or that I have for the Cowboys), but he cheers for them nonetheless.

You and my step brother are just a like. He grew up outside San Francisco. He is still a 49er fan and he was a rabid Cowboys hater. Today he loves the Cowboys, (only after Michael Irvin left the team) but his home town ties grow deep. If the 49ers and Cowboys play, there is a 60 minute period that he becomes a Cowboys hater again.

Oh and one other thing. The fact that the Texans beat the Cowboys in their first ever regular season game brought just about all of the old Oilers fans into the fold. I think the hated the Cowboys more than they ever loved the Oilers. They have some serious issues down there in Houston ;)
There was no such thing as an Oiler fan before Earl got there and their hatred for Pittsburg made me have to pull for them.

I've always been a cowboys fan, but live in philly, so if the cowboys were no more, i would pick a team each year whose personel i like and root for that team, but it would probably change year to year. I just wouldnt be able to find another team to replace the cowboys, but i love football so i wouldnt stop watching. I like what the bengals are doing so if something all of a sudden happened to the cowboys i would root for the bengals this year, but it wouldnt be with the same passion, it would just come down to i like some of their players so i would enjoy watching those guys play. Watching great players perform is a treat no matter what team they play for (as long as they dont wear green, lol)

i remember seeing something on espn where a guys room was FILLLED with oiler items. hole bunch of signatures and stuff of that nature. he said he wouldn't cheer for the titans but wait for a new houston team. unfortunally for him they still have yet to bring back real football to houston
