Even as an Eagles fan, I've admired some of the Dallas Cowboy great running backs like Tony Dorsett, Calvin Hill, Robert Newhouse, and Emmitt Smith. That said, I must admit ...I was shocked that Cowboys GM didn't give Emmitt Smith another shot at dotting the "i" on Cowboy running back.

This may sound a little strange coming from me, but it angers me slightly to hear fans of any franchise saying that Emmitt lost steps right before he retired and that he couldn't contribute toward the team.

I say it was a mistake to let him retire that One year prematurely. Emmitt, probably to this day is a better running back than JJ or anyone on the 2006 roster! Emmitt was indeed the "answer" to getting into the playoffs in 2005/2006!

If anyone has a problem with that, let's hear why ...this isn't personal. I just don't understand why a "healthy" Emmitt Smith was not retained on the 2005 Cowboys roster (future HOF)!

Because the bonus money he would have gotten had he stayed would not be worth lack of production Emmitt was starting to show. If were in the era of no cap then it may have been a different story but today teams have to be able to cut ties and move on. I have always been a big fan of ES but his play had dropped off quite a bit.

Umm because It was time for emittit to retire, he did all that he wanted, won a ring, broke Payton's record, and Just Like MJ finally scrachted that "itch" to play the sport they loved, it was not a choice we made, it was a choice he made.

So....is this thread truly about Emmitt?

Or are you trying to draw comparisons to Larry Allen?

You already know the answer to the Emmitt question. Do you really think a slower, older RB would have made a vast difference in our running game?

No. Our problem was the OL.

And you probably know that.

So this is either a thread heading in the direction of Larry Allen....or more "woe is your OL" type stuff.

The good news is, I don't think you are trying to twist this into a TO thread.

Oh, and I almost forget.....

Who is the OTHER key OL we lost?

Still awaiting a response. Last time, you quoted some obscure magazine that I could care less about.

I want your answer. Not a magazine's.

As an Eagles fan, I fully understand the "cut ties" concept. But I'd be Interested to know what Emmitts stats were compared to JJ and Other Rbs were in 2005. Couldn't have been that much of a difference ...or maybe the numbers did tell the story.

I can Understand. But I'm sure that I heard some chatter about Emmitt would have played another year then retired if the Cowboy's would have wanted him. DId anyone else hear anything like that?

Come on Vintage ...give it a rest for once. I really do admire Cowboy rbs. But I do think Emmitt could have contributed toward your team making the playoffs In 2005.

In 2004 in 15 games Smith got 937. Jones in 7 games got 819 and last year in 12 games 993. As far as I'm concerned Emmitt was the best back in Cowboy history (I know some will say TD was) but given the fact of how much ES was going to make did not justify keeping him in Dallas. Cowboys were heading down hill and the only way your going get back to the top is by using your money wisely and getting younger guys not by holding on to past glory.

Are you talking about the first time he was let go or after he played with Arizona?

Unfortunately the first time seemed to be the way Parcells chose to clean house and try to move forward in building a new team. The team was clearly rebuilding and I think that as long as Emmitt was there , they were not going to find his replacement.

I don't know if Emmitt would have been happy getting 10 carries a game if they did try to bring someone in and now that the rest of the team has gained some talent, he would be retiring anyway... maybe without any valid options at rb.. or probably a rookie first rounder.

Emmitt was great, but he was not the missing piece the last two years. The running backs have done well when the oline did it's job.

Can we talk straight for a minute? Threads vary from one to the next, some stay on topic while others drift. But primarily, posters determine the course and direction of a thread. While I may or may not have layers to my thread that require peeling to get to the core, others thread are just the "quacking duck" concept. My intent isn't to stray from the topic ...what's your intent?

But I know you! I know you won't let this go. I Know how aggravatingly persistent you can be. That's why my answer is ...

I don't know who the other "key" OL is. While I hope you don't incur yet an additional OL player loss ...the year hasn't even started yet. Perhap my answer will stand.

Wasn't that a type of ceremonial retirement versus a end-of-year retirement (I could be wrong ...uncertain).

Thnaks, those numbers aren't that different. And someone said, if he had a stronger OL her would have had even larger numbers.

You obviously didn't watch ES play for Arizona. Emmitt was my all-time favorite player, but he was way past his prime. I certainly respect how long he was successful in this league, but do you honestly believe that any NFL running back can carry the load well into his late 30's?

Did some research ...Yeah, I see what you mean He was kind of old to continue. Probably was the best thing to prevent any injuries.

I love how your statements change repeatedly after I poke holes in them.

First it was we "lost Allen and another key OL."

Implying, that we lost one in the past tense, as in this offseason.

Rather than admit you were wrong, you tried to play it off as Torrin Tucker. Of which, you came after me, trying to say I did not know who Torrin Tucker was.

Then, IIRC, superpunk and I went back and forth with some sarcasm, which you took literally...

Of which, I then went into my rip your arguement to shred modes....and did so. I probably went above and beyond what was necessary to prove my point in that threa, but I justified it to myself...

Now, you are changing to the present arguement, saying the "season hasn't played out....and we could lose another one."

Which is a complete flip flop from your original statement, saying we already had lost one.

All you are doing is trying to save face.

Admit it.

But you were right on one thing... "If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck..."
