Dallas Cowboy Running Backs

Even as an Eagles fan, I've admired some of the Dallas Cowboy great running backs like Tony Dorsett, Calvin Hill, Robert Newhouse, and Emmitt Smith. That said, I must admit ...I was shocked that Cowboys GM didn't give Emmitt Smith another shot at dotting the "i" on Cowboy running back.

This may sound a little strange coming from me, but it angers me slightly to hear fans of any franchise saying that Emmitt lost steps right before he retired and that he couldn't contribute toward the team.

I say it was a mistake to let him retire that One year prematurely. Emmitt, probably to this day is a better running back than JJ or anyone on the 2006 roster! Emmitt was indeed the "answer" to getting into the playoffs in 2005/2006!

If anyone has a problem with that, let's hear why ...this isn't personal. I just don't understand why a "healthy" Emmitt Smith was not retained on the 2005 Cowboys roster (future HOF)!

actually Emmitt was replaced by Hambrick and then we got JJ. so that one year would not have been common between the two.

second, what would that extra year have gotten the cowboys? emmitt retiring in a cowboy uniform? well it was obvious emmitt should have retired and not gone to AZ. the cowboys were starting to rebuild, so giving a contract, even a veteran min which Emmitt would not have taken would have been a waste of money since you knew you had to evaluate young players and rebuild accordingly. Unfortunatley in a lot of cases it turns out this way. the team gets old, the older players trying to hang on for one last run, they want to go somewhere and prove it and it turns out they should have retired. See Dorsett, See Rice (though he had a couple of good years), See Brown, too many to mention.

You're right.

Wasn't that a type of ceremonial retirement versus a end-of-year retirement (I could be wrong ...uncertain).

Yes it was one of those 1 day contract situations. However at the stage Dallas was at Emmitt was not going to help the future of the ball club. ES did a lot for this team and I loved having him on the team but today you can't afford to hold on to a player based on past glory.

Hindsight is 20/20... I'm still pissed the ex Giants coach dissed the COWBOYS GREAT!!! in Parcells first year EMMITT would have done a better JOB than HAMBRICK, Hambrick fans found out what Hutchinson fans did that year... Hambrick cant play and EMMITT fans like myself were too upset to do the "I told you so"!!!

Year 2 Parcells drafts an injury prone RB who plays half a season while JERRY goes and signs EDDIE GEORGE so we are not stuck with RICHIE ANDERSON... so once again we are stuck with a RB less than EMMITT while BILL is wrapped up in finding a QB!!!

Year 3 Parcells signs Anthony Thomas and needless to say a RB that could not produce more than EMMITT given the same situation...

Year 4 Parcells signs NO VET RB!!! he is 0 for 3 with the RB situation I dont see how it will change!!!

would EMMITT have taken a lesser role, I dont know, But I dont even think PARCELLS tried... Granted the OL was poor but the OL has been poor for almost 10 years!!!

I think EMMITT can help the 06 team as a short yardage back and in case of injury to JULES or BARBER much like the A TRAIN was last year!!!

Not familiar with him.

Was he on our roster last year? What position?

It certainly wasn't either tackle spot. They didn't stop anyone.

I personally am tired Phoenix-Talon's need for debate on every issue. Do we go on their boards to debunk and dissect any and all decisions their players, coach, or mgmt makes? I think not.

I read right through your , PT and I wish other members would just ignore you. You're like the kid in HS that was such a wuss he'd try and talk his way out of a fistfight that he caused. Your backhanded compliments about Emmitt not withstanding, your full of it.

Every team has ups and downs and mistakes made with players based upon salary and age... but analyze this .. your team's entire window of opportunity slammed shut last year.

Go debunk your organization's penchance for screwing things up, not ours which is aiming at an uprecedented 6th Lombardi Trophy.
