I know many aren't happy with the way the off season went this year. And there are obviously still 3 big name players wanting new deals and more to come quickly.

With that in mind, taking a look at a year from now the 2025 salary cap situation for the Cowboys paints an interesting picture.

As of right now the Cowboys will have $68,164,375 in cap space available. The 5th most in the NFL.

Get your popcorn ready.

All that is probably spoken for between CeeDee, Parsons, and maybe Dak?
Probably not as much as you think....at least for next years cap. Assuming all three receive new deals within the next year at least two of the three (Dak/Parsons) can potentially lower their 2025 cap numbers with new deals. Parsons is already playing under the 5th year option so he is slated to count $21M against he cap. If they wanted to the Cowboys could get that number lower if an extension is added on and push the bill down the road. Similar situation with Dak who is currently slated to count $40M against the cap next year. If he were to sign a new deal the Cowboys could spread some of that money over a longer period of time as well. The only true new money that would hurt the Cowboys 2025 cap would be Lamb as he isnt slated to count against the cap at all currently.

That trio really shouldn't hurt the Cowboys ability to sign guys specifically for the 2025 season, where they'll hurt the Cowboys free agent abilities in signing guys to multi year deals if they elect to backload these contracts.

That's wonderful. Looking at the 2025 free agent class, I'm actually hoping they don't spend for the sake of spending. This was the year to address needs such as DT and RB.

Potentially, but even if they had 20 million left after those contracts they're probably not spending it and at some point have years where those contract numbers balloon. They would probably be better off not kicking the can down too far because in a few years they could have 120+ million committed in a single year to those guys.

Yes, $68M. Now add a Dak or another QB, CeeDee or a WR, Tank and Zack Martin, Cooks if re-signed etc. Offsetting this is Micah is listed at $21M but will go down significantly as it will be the first year of his extension.
Now obviously all of those new deals will be backloaded and easily fit within our cap. My point was just remember that you only have much less than that to work with to improve the team once you add in the players I mentioned or their replacements. And also there are many contracts that can be restructured like Diggs, Steele, etc to free up money. At this point in time future cap space amounts are not all that meaningful. For example, in 2026 we currently have $246M in cap space o_O

They also have 30 players whose contracts are up after this year including Dak and CD’s contracts. Its not going to be much room once all is taken into account. They’ll be more active just because they have to fill out a roster. But no big deals.

All of that is spoken for if not more unless you let Dak and/or CeeDee walk.

Maybe if both of them sign really long term deals you could get some capspace but you still have to sign next year's draft class. You have a total of 30 free agents
https://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/lists/cowboys-2025-list-free-agents-potential/
As of the writing of that report.

2026 is really the year where things start to clear up as the void years go away.

Yeah you're right, and this is why its so importants if they do resign these guys to not give them super short contracts. Ideally you want 5 years of control for these guys plus a void year to spread those cap hits around. 4 typically isnt the end of the world, but 3 or less is a real disadvantage to the team.

Even with some extra cash I doubt they make a big free agent splash, however having some extra cash in 2025 could be the difference in them signing or tagging a guy like OSA to get another year or having the rollover cash to tag or resign a guy like Bland the following year.

How they choose to use that cap space means everything. You can buy 1 car for 50k. Or you can buy five 50k cars by putting 10k down on each. Same money spent, 5 times the product. The Cowboys lean towards the 1 car approach. This isn't an opinion, they've said as much in regard to spending towards the future.

Parsons probably won't be playing under the 5th year option. He'll probably get a deal done before that. If they extend Dak and Lamb now, by 2025 their cap hits will probably total anywhere between 30-40M. Easily. Then add Parsons, another 15M. Could be close to all of it depending on how much they push forward. The Cowboys like to use up all of the space so they don't have to get FAs.
