Dallas Cowboys 5th round picks

I created a program that measures the productivity of each draft pick in order to rank that team's success in drafting.

Each draft pick is awarded points based on games played, games started and pro bowls. They get a point for each game they participate in. They get an additional point if they started. They get 12 points for each season in which they made the Pro Bowl.

It doesn't matter whether or not they play for teh team that draftewd them. The point of teh evaluation is to determine the ability to draft productive players and not their ability to retain them.

Over the most recent 10 combined seasons, the Cowboys were rated 4th in drafting, behind only the Ravens, Packers, and Rams.

When you look specifically at the 4th round from 2013 to 2022, the Cowboys are ranked 3rd in the league using my measurement system. They have three players with at least one Pro Bowl and they are all currently Cowboys offensive starters, quite an accomplishment for a group of 4th round picks.

The 2nd round used to be the Cowboys worse but that is no longer the case. The Cowboys are ranked dead last in the productivity of their 5th round picks over the past ten seasons.

The Cowboys best round is the 1st where they are in 2nd place behind only the Rams.
Nice work, it would interesting to see the rankings if pro bowl was substituted by all pro, since the pro bowl has too much fan influence and tends to be a popularity contest with the players.

Yep. We do better with UDFA’s than the 5th on.
I would expect that to be true for most teams. You get around 3 picks a year in the 5th-to-7th rounds (more with comp picks, less if you trade them). You sign a boatload of UDFAs each season.

There is some fan voting but when you mix in the player and coach voting, the homerism fan voting is far less impactful..

"Fan voting accounts for one-third of the Pro Bowl process, with players' and coaches' votes making up the remaining two-thirds."

I considered using the All Pro instead of Pro Bowls, perhaps awarding 6 additional points to their season. However, its a big jump from regular starter to 1st team All Pro. For example, there are 32 starting centers in the league but only one of them becomes 1st team All Pro. With four of them making the Pro Bowl, I figured it would be more of a tier system if a small group was awarded points instead of a single player.

I also thought about using them both but I felt it would be a little redundant. I'm sure there are a few more examples but I can only remember one case where a Cowboys player made 1st team All Pro but was excluded from the Pro Bowl until an injury opened a spot for him. That was LB Sean Lee. Also, can we really say that a single player is the best at his position for that particular season. Sometimes, when it is a skill position, but i think it's rare.

its the 5th round guys.. man draft week and its dead enough to debate how our 5th rounder's have worked out LOL wow. :omg:

that list isn't that bad for 5th rounders.

1 in 10 is a good 5th round hit rate. Then again we are a fan base that think they are entitled to a Lombardi ever few years.

I would be interesting to compare our 5th rd. picks vs successful teams. Does front office evaluate players pass the 3rd round or are we just looking for camp bodies at that point and hope we find a diamond.
