You can't hit on every pick. I'm more concern about rounds 1-4. Then hitting every once in a while from picks 5-7.

That is what separates the teams that can successful build in the draft from those who can't. And most can't.

The best at nailing these kind of choices is Ted Thompson, who coincidently is one of the few GMs who scouts exceptionally deep.

He is physically present at even the obscure All-Star game practices and is at practically every major college Pro Day.

2015- Brent Hundley, QB, UCLA
2014- Corey Linsley, C, Ohio State
2013- Micah Hyde, S, Iowa; Josh Boyd, DE, Mississippi State
2012- Terrell Manning, ILB, North Carolina State
2011- D.J. Williams, TE, Arkansas
2010- Andrew Quarless, TE, Penn State; Marshall Newhouse, OT, TCU
2009- Quinn Johnson, FB, LSU; Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina

That is pretty impressive. 4 starters and a reserve still on the team. Only two of them out of the league.

Find me a team over that span who has drafted worse.

But more importantly, check out how the good teams draft in those rounds. Look at SEA/NE/PIT/CIN.

An average player will look / play better on a team with already strong players. And will learn to be better in some cases.
An average player on a weaker team often does not make those other players better. As those players themselves can't offer that average player a chance to improve. Unless a natural gifted athlete that needs time to learn.

5th round players do not usually step in right away and be a big contributor.

Russell...do not know yet
Street......going into last year, didn't know enough, but now we do. He can / should be replaced.
Randle....headcase but was a good backup, and should have stayed the back up last year, should have never started. For a 5th, he was productive while here
Coale......injuries, we had more than our share of these players, but seemed a decent pick at the time, kind of
Thomas...one of those, he is the BPA so lets pick him, I guess, but I think was a need pick more than BPA
Smith....... probably came as above
Hamlin..... probably came as above
Beuhler....we needed a good K, and he had the leg, an was a decent pick, but we did better, needed competition, and we did better.

Right. And the post wasn't specifically about the fifth round. It was about how bad DAL has been throughout the entire third day.

If you get productive players from rounds 6 and 7, you are doing good too. Thompson got players like Jeff Janis, James Starks and Brad Jones.

I did not say they were average.
I actually was saying they were strong teams...meaning an average player will look better, as the better players will hide their flaws.
But take that same player and put them on a weaker team, those flaws will be exposed, therefore fans saying he is a bust.

Not saying this would be the case...but used as an example....Wilcox drafted by us, many say he is a bust, and reasonably so.
However put him on the field in Seattle with their DB's and pass rush and LB's....we would be saying....why didn't we draft that guy.....

I wish in 2009 we took all those draft picks and traded up to selected 2-3 players they wanted. Trading out of the 2 nd round sum up that whole draft...a failure.

It is FAR more likely that someone like Wilcox would never get on the field in Seattle or GB

He had actually managed to stay on the field and in the league precisely because he is on this team

A player Wilcox does not get it and is a bust no matter what excuse we make
