They did that in the 3rd quarter - never seen that before.

I did. In 1992 Week 2, Dallas went up on the Giants 34-0 when Aikman hit Irvin for a TD with 9 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.
CBS dropped the coverage - and the Giants went on to score 28 unanswered points to put a scare in the eventual Super Bowl XXVII Champions.
