Dallas Cowboys: DeMarcus Lawrence not satisfied with 6.5 sacks
https://thelandryhat.com/2017/09/29/dallas-cowboys-demarcus-lawrence-not-satisfied-6-5-sacks/

...In 2016, the Dallas Cowboys sack leader was a newly signed free agent, defensive end Benson Mayowa. Despite being benched at one point last season, the former Oakland Raider was able rack up 6.0 sacks.
Only three games into the 2017 NFL regular season, fourth-year defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence has been able to eclipse Mayowa’s sack total from all of last season. The 25-year old currently leads the NFL in three categories: sacks (6.5), tackles for loss (7) and quarterback pressures (26).

Lawrence’s 6.5 sacks is the most in Cowboys history through the first three games of the year, breaking the record held by legendary pass rusher Charles Haley whom had 5.5 sacks in the first two games of the 1994 season.

Despite his amazing start, Lawrence himself isn’t satisfied with his performance. “Not good enough,” Lawrence told the team’s official website. “I left a lot out there on the table. Got to get better from this point on. Opportunity is out there and it’s like, just get better. Don’t dwell on the moment, but just get better and make more plays. Why not? They’re there.”

What would be great if we simply paid him say $500,000 per sack. Something like that. That way we really do pay for production.

Is this dude really going to make me go back on my "I don't like to resign players performing well in a contract year" stance?

I still don't like it. No long term deal for one year of production......especially with an injury history.

No problem with franchising him though. He should be pleased with $18M or so guaranteed. Then he can do it again next year.

If he can do it again? Then we can talk long term deal.

Remember Miles Austin.

One just doesn't build upon a projection of injury. If he is strong for a year, then that aspect drops out of a dominant picture with negotiations. Play always trumps projections.

It would be foolish to just ignore hid injury history.....especially a back injury. Which could flare up practically any minute.

Give me 2 productive, injury free years, then we can talk JPP type money.

At the very least, Lawrence is a pocket breaker and a piece Dallas has searched for a pretty long time...

IDK........$18 million would make him the highest paid DE in the league. Not sure he's worthy of that title after one year, regardless the number of sacks this year. Not to mention that $18m would his starting point for a long-term deal. My take if he's still on fire up to T'giving , let's try and sign him to a 4-year deal averaging $13-15m with a nice signing bonus. This way he gets his money with enough time for another long-term deal and we get to keep a rising young player who can cut loose after three years if necessary. Also, save $3-5m per year........

If he keeps producing, there is no way he will agree to any deal mid-season. No way. Never happen.

As for the franchise tag, the $18M was just a guess. Whatever the franchise amount will be for DE's this coming offseason is what he should get.

I would have no issues with that.....assuming he keeps producing.

The 2017 tag for DE is $16.9M (fact), can provide a link if you like ..........expect that to go up a bit for 2018. So your $18M "guess" is fairly close. You're probably right, it would be a challenge to sign him mid-season but I'd certainly make a strong push, even with a little guarantee $$$$$. Anything to keep him from the $17-18M range.

Statistically, is Lawrence usually by an offensive tackle...Step 2 or step 3?

If contacted on step two, he can lift and bull rush...step three, aim for the quarterback's spot.

Early on, if the defensive tackle moves outwards and the opposing line adjusts accordingly, the Lawrence takes it inside and untouched in a line to the opposing quarterback.

The Rams have given up only 3 sacks so far...but I'm not expecting a triangle solo, but good play up front here.

Makes you wonder how many sacks Tapper would have if this guy wasn't in the way as a progress stopper.

Risen, this is the direction my current interest is taken...the secondary.

FRISCO, Texas – Rod Marinelli chuckled and gave a classic football answer when he was asked about one of his youngest new defenders.

At what point did you feel comfortable playing Xavier Woods, normally a safety, at nickel back? “I think when he played good,” Marinelli said with a smile.
They say there’s no substitute for live action, and there’s no way to truly evaluate a player until he sees some. It certainly seems like the Cowboys are learning that about their rookie defensive backs – and maybe none more so than Woods.

Yes, there’s something to be said for Jourdan Lewis, who is handling himself quite well after missing the entirety of training camp with a hamstring injury. But Lewis is at least playing the position he was drafted to play. Woods, the sixth-round pick that the Cowboys traded up to select in April, has seen a little bit of everything. When injuries left them depleted in Week 2 at Denver, it was Woods that the Cowboys’ coaches threw into the fray at nickel back against the Broncos...

Agreed. He could have 40 sacks and I'm still tagging him.

We're not even 1/4 of the way into the season yet. If he keeps going at his current pace he'll hit 12 sacks around the 8th/9th game of the season. With about 1/2 the season yet to play.
