Dallas Cowboys Hope They Have Hidden Gem in Ryan Russell

Back in 2006 when the Dallas Cowboys drafted a little known defensive end out of Grambling State named Jason Hatcher. Not much attention or fanfare was thrown his way as he was widely considered to be more of a project with potential than that of an early-round steal. But Bill Parcells and the Cowboys saw what other teams didn’t — a versatile defensive lineman who could play multiple positions and do so at a high level. While it did take him a while to come into his own, he eventually rewarded the Cowboys with a Pro Bowl season, one in which he racked up 11 sacks and became the leader for the team.

They lost him last season to free agency but they may have found his eventual replacement in Ryan Russell. The Cowboys’ fifth-round pick is a lanky defensive end out of Purdue whose quickness and power off the line causes headaches for offensive linemen, but the one thing that’s keeping him from being the dominant player he can be is his technique. Russell’s lack of footwork and use of hands keeps him from consistently getting by strong offensive linemen, and some even call into question his work ethic.

But Rod Marinelli, who is known for demanding maximum effort from his players on every single play, signed off on this pick and you can certainly bet that he will get the most out of Russell. What will help him is the fact that not much will be required from him early on as he has a host of talent ahead of him on the depth chart, similar to Hatcher when he first came into the league. He will only be required to come in and spell the likes of Greg Hardy, Demarcus Lawrence, Jeremy Mincey and Randy Gregory. He will add yet another fresh body to attack a worn down offensive line and this will do nothing but work wonders for his confidence.

As he learns the techniques that are necessary to make him a better player, nothing will build his confidence more in the new skill set he’s just acquired than seeing instant success on the field. And putting him in positions against linemen who are not at their best will do just that. He may never reach the Pro Bowl level that Hatcher once did, but to find a player who can consistently put pressure in the backfield with a pick in the fifth round of the draft certainly qualifies as finding a hidden gem.

This Russell kid is intriguing.

Not sure what is upside is but it certainly hurt his draft status by placing him in a style of defense that he's not a good match for.

Everyone quickly forgets about this guy, myself included but I could see him being a very good rotation guy and an impact player on this defense.

Marinelli signed off on the pick.

We looked at him before turning in the card and he nodded. Then The Godfather theme played.

I doubt the coaches really have much idea about the late rounders aside from what our scouts tell them. I expect if they are watching film it is mostly on early round guys

Thought I read after the draft that Leon Lett personally worked him out at Purdue.

As it relates to Jason Hatcher, actually, the Patriots wanted him but Dallas snatched him up. I think Belichik even complimented Parcells, saying they were going to take him but Dallas pulled the trigger first.

I'm just curious. Why do you doubt this?

I KNOW FOR A FACT that positional coaches are very involved in helping to evaluate all potential draft prospects.

After the scouts submits their evaluations , the positional coaches watch film and even do visits on prospects. That is a major part of their job between Janaury and up to the draft. Their input plays a big part on putting together the draft board.

Fifth round picks are always going to harbor some doubt as to their capabilities. His measurables are surely impressive enough. If anyone is quite likely to light a fire under his hind quarters, it'd probably be Marinelli.

We'll see about DL.

You couldn't ask for a better situation at defensive end but we are about 1 deep at defensive tackle.

Yea I stay a little undecided about out 1tech in the middle. The team is moving forward as if thats decided.
From my computer and couch I just say we'll see. We will repeat our conference and I'm hoping for more.

I guess its because of all of the high profile picks we got but seriously forgot about this guy or getting a DE in the 5th round........

I wouldn't say that. When they make up the big board they're also considering who will be available to them in the later rounds. These guys don't just get drafted without watching film on them. There's a whole lot of time in between losing your last game and the draft and ample time for the scouts to make a list to present to the coaches. I'm sure they saw quite a bit of film on Russell prior to drafting him.

It's a bit confusing, the full tilt they've taken at the DE position while a seemingly shaky DT position just gets ignored. It makes you think, or hope, that they have great faith in last years unplayed and unproven youngsters or they plan on moving some of these DEs inside.
