I doubt the coaches really have much idea about the late rounders aside from what our scouts tell them. I expect if they are watching film it is mostly on early round guys

Also, Brady Tinker in this one mentions Leon Lett was on the table for Russell.
Russell talk starts at 5:40 area.

Can he make the roster. Could they hid him on the practice squad if needed?

I think all the guys drafted after the 4th round will be on the practice squad, assuming they pass waivers and their isn't rash of injuries that puts them on the active roster. And Russell could definitely be a Ron Leary type that steps into a significant role after spending a year on the practice squad.

No matter what we won't have Hardy Week 1, and I suspect likely through at least week 4. That gives Russell a far better chance to make the team off the bat, and unless he really shows up those first 4 weeks (which it is rare for a DE to do even if they were drafted in the first round) I don't see anyone picking him up off of waivers before we can get him to the practice squad.

This Russell kid is intriguing.

Not sure what is upside is but it certainly hurt his draft status by placing him in a style of defense that he's not a good match for.

I think years 2-4 we have quite a bit of talent developing at the defensive end position.

Hardy helps allow us to get Gregory up to speed for next year. Tank Lawrence should have a break out year this year. Ryan Russell and Ben Gardner are both interesting players, as is Obada down the road. Let's also not forget Jack Crawford. With a lot of these players, they really only need time and coaching.

No way Ryan Russell goes to the practice squad. Zero chance of that. As for the 7th rounders, yes, they will all be practice squad players, except for Swaim maybe if the Cowboys move Hanna before the end of preseason.

Yeah, as x has said before. Teams will usually pick up drafted players when waived. Russell being a 5th round DE. Teams will have good grades on him also.

It's a bit confusing, the full tilt they've taken at the DE position while a seemingly shaky DT position just gets ignored. It makes you think, or hope, that they have great faith in last years unplayed and unproven youngsters or they plan on moving some of these DEs inside.

Broaddus has stated several times that they are rotating the DEs inside. The fans are much more worried about DT than the team is.

How could that be possible? We saw multiple scouting reports that said he was picked too high. Please don't suggest we know anything about drafting

He came in for a visit. They already started coaching him just on the pre-draft visit. They told him they like his talent but he has to go all out 100% of the time and they didn't think he did that in college.

He said all of this in his post draft interview.

I'm just curious. Why do you doubt this?

I KNOW FOR A FACT that positional coaches are very involved in helping to evaluate all potential draft prospects.

After the scouts submits their evaluations , the positional coaches watch film and even do visits on prospects. That is a major part of their job between Janaury and up to the draft. Their input plays a big part on putting together the draft board.

Yes, the Cowboys usually narrow their draft board down to about 120 players according to Stephen Jones. If about 1/2 are defense, then that's 60 players for the defensive coaches to study and probably less then 20 on DL. Also, Russell was a pre-draft visit. I'm certain the coaches have studied all of those guys.

I think Russell beats out Boatright and Crawford out of camp. Crawford may have the edge in experience but if its close they are going to keep the guy with a cheap 4 year contract. That spots not likley to get more the 150 snaps in 2015. I think Russell is a much better 4-3 DE then Gardner, but Gardner may get looks inside and is a more natural LDE

2016 I think Russell can be very effective wave player. A guy that can be very effective playing a quarter or so of defensive snaps. Gardner as well. Gardner as a end I think would be similar to what we saw out of Tyrone Crawford early in the season at DE. A solid run defender and an effort rusher who may struggle to put the QB down or under real durress but will effectively be able to push the pocket due to effort. Russell in contrast has the abilities of a true 4-3 edge rusher and could come off the edge from either. Together they could form a solid pair of #3 and #4 DEs which are important to us if we want to send waves

We have several guys that we have to do something with, because they will never make it to the practice squad. We are just not devoid of talent like years past. We are accumulating some nice depth. We are going to lose some nice players and other teams will be watching for our castaways.

The ranks of the DE position in Dallas are crowded this year. It might very likely be one of the most competitive positions they'll test in TC this year. Russell is but one of many who will be competing for attention at that spot.

The candidates for prospective consideration are numerous enough to make it competitive merely to qualify for practice squad status. It'll be interesting to see what the staff ultimately decides to do with guys like Gardner, Jack Crawford and Russell, who all have distinct possibilities to either end up on the active roster or possibly even on the practice squad.

It routinely comes down to numbers being the deciding factor and this year isn't likely to be any exception. I wouldn't want to be among the "bubble" candidates this year at all. Some very good prospects may very well be listed among the waivers. Boatright and Edwards immediately come to mind as likely to fall into that category.

That would be disappointing
