http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/bears/post/_/id/4697798/lance-briggs-to-meet-with-49ers-on-monday

Seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs told ESPN.com he has a Monday visit scheduled with the San Francisco 49ers.

i

Briggs just completed his 12th and final season with the Chicago Bears. The Elk Grove, California, native grew up 1 ½ hours from Candlestick Park and was a 49ers fan.

The 49ers are in desperate need of help at linebacker following the retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland. The team only has three experienced inside linebackers on the roster.

Briggs, who turns 35 in November, said he strongly believes he can "still perform at an elite level" as he looks to continue his career. He played in just eight games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.

Here's the rest of the article ....

According to statistics compiled by the Bears, Briggs surpassed 100 tackles in a season eight different times. In his career, he also has 16 interceptions, 15 sacks and five defensive touchdowns. Briggs is one of four linebackers in franchise history to be selected to seven consecutive Pro Bowls, joining Hall of Fame members Dick Butkus, Bill George and Mike Singletary.

49ers general manager Trent Baalke confirmed the team’s interest in Briggs when he spoke at the NFL owners meetings.

Briggs has drawn interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys as well.

With our linebackers so depleted, I could see bringing him in for rotational depth and as a security blanket for if anything happens to Sean Lee or if anything happened to any other linebacker, you basically move one over to the left.

We have something like 12 LBers on the roster if you include Ro. You count discount his experience but he's a two down player now IMO. We have Brinkley, Hitchens, Gachkar and Lee who can play the Mike not including Ro whom I think won't be signed. If you put Hitchens at the Sam and Lee the Will then you are thin at Mike. So I suppose they could bring him in for a short term contract with little or no guaranteed money.

I don't like our situation in the Nickel. They may have more confidence in Watson and some others to play that role. Even Lee is not optimal at that although gets by via instincts.

Borderline HoF 4-3 OLB which is a very rare thing these days, however, his glory days are well behind him.

Pass.

I wouldn't be that shocked if this was true. It wouldn't be that different from us signing Zach Thomas or Keith Brooking near the end of their careers. Granted we have moved past that a bit in recent years, but he would still be a solid 2 down linebacker for us, so I wouldn't mind too much as long as the deal was right.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I call BS from his agent. Just trying to increase value.

I highly doubt they are looking to add another vet LB.

I call BS from a lazy journalist. An agent linking his client to a team with low cap space is not really doing a lot for him in a fiscal sense.

Oh, a former Bear from the Lovie Smith era? Well, this is an easy Dallas and Tampa "showing interest".
