Dallas Cowboys invested in toughness – will it pay off?

This offseason, the Dallas Cowboys set out on a mission: get tougher. After getting physically manhandled in the postseason, it was clear something had to change. For as good as the 12-win Cowboys were in 2021, they were severely lacking in the physicality department.

Highly talented players like WR Amari Cooper and RT La’el Collins were deemed overpriced and all-too-often, unavailable. Replacing them with tougher versions and building the roster with “toughness” as a key trait became an overt goal.

Are we talking about the rookies that have never played a snap in the NFL and we have no idea how they will be?

We have no idea what they have invested in until we see it on the field. They might have invested in gold or Radio Shack. We'll see.

What was presented was direction. That involves quality of drafts to include this year's class...and it was accentuated.

Last year, veterans and toughness there was as well, accentuated and still growing on the carpet!

If we are including last years draft class than yes I see the profile similarities.

Jayron Kearse went from a one-year prove-it deal to the Cowboys’ leader in the safety room
“It’s very different than last year. This time last year I was coming in to compete and just trying to get my feet wet, and earn my way here. Now this time, it’s established that I’m a leader and guys look at me to lead. The play has to be there along with me encouraging guys. It’s definitely different, and I put myself in that position.”

It has been this TYPE of direction that was NEVER apparent when Garrett was running the show.

Having a much less talented team does not make it in any ways tougher. I don't see a direction towards toughness. I just see the usual lack of foresight in the front office along with some mediocre drafts.

I like adding players that have an element of toughness, a bit of a nasty streak. But I also like my coaching staff to demand toughness, to demand discipline when it comes to our players. At some point the light needs to be shined on the coaches that allowed a team playing at home in the playoffs to get man handled.

This was an epic fail for both players and coaches. I'm not going to pat the organization on the back for drafting a few tough players, when they refused to address the mental and physical toughness of the players already on the roster.

Toughness wasnt the issue....it was discipline

they were tough last year but all those penalties were shameful

You're right.

They were tough enough.

Gregory's penalties alone pretty much cost us the game.

Kearse may be on top of the depth chart currently at the position, but that title is in tenure only at this point.

I have no idea what this means. I thought Kearse was pretty good last season and maybe the best free agent we’ve signed it a decade? Not much competition though.
