Dallas Cowboys' Mike McCarthy 1st Fired HC Betting Favorite?
RICHIE WHITTJUL 19, 2024

Over 34 seasons and eight head-coach firings (counting Tom Landry in 1989), only once has Jerry Jones made an in-season change. Could it happen this year if Mike McCarthy's Dallas Cowboys get off to a slow start?

In 2010 - only nine months removed from the team's first playoff win in 13 years - the owner fired Wade Phillips and replaced him with Jason Garrett. The Cowboys entered the season as defending NFC East champs, but an early season-ending injury to quarterback Tony Romo led to games started by backups Jon Kitna and Stephen McGee and the season hit rock bottom in an embarrassing 45-7 loss at Green Bay on Sunday Night Football.

3 of the top 6 are NFC East HC's!

The Cowboys early schedule, their putrid offseason, and his lame duck HC status rightfully put McCarthy in a precarious situation.

Hopefully, this team surprises in 2024. Otherwise, McCarthy, Prescott and several others will be out in Dallas, all except the GM and his EVP/Cap Boy of course.

If MM gets fired it won't be until the end of the season. The only reason Wade Phillips was fired mid season was because Jerry's pet project, Jason Garrett, was already on staff and Jerry most likely had already promised him the job once Wade was gone. That isn't the case this time around.

Why are the Cowboys always among betting favorites in things they don't ever do? Like firing coaches during the season and winning Super Bowls?

Dak or McCarthy should’ve been sent packing after last season.

They did nothing.

This franchise is a joke and now we have to waste another season because of ownership dragging their feet.

If the Cowboys season goes poorly and they ultimately fire McCarthy, Jerry will want to capitalize on the attention a "new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys" search would bring so I doubt it would be a fast transition.

Without a potential future replacement already on staff, firing McCarthy mid-season, even if it goes badly, will provide the media with a lot of content for weeks or months about Jerry's failure to replace McCarthy after the 2023 season.

The mid-season firing of Phillips was made possible only because Jerry already had his likely next coach on the staff in Garrett.

The only potential already-on-staff replacement for McCarthy is Zimmer and he is older, has not led a team to a Super Bowl and likely would not generate any excitement amongst fans or the media.

I'm not so sure. He fired Wade because the Cowboys stopped playing for him. If you watched the Jacksonville game, they weren't playing. Followed by the game against GB, there was no choice. If that happens again, they'll fire the coach again.

I can definitely see it happening, especially if Dak isn't extended
  • It's a sneaky way of tanking for a possible top 5 draft pick
  • It gives them a chance to evaluate Zimm as an interim HC
  • Maybe bring Dak's price down a bit

End of the season after having a bad season you'll hear Jerry come out FIRST THING HE'LL SAY IS "We've have no thoughts of replacing Mike, he's our coach, we value what he's done here, we think a lot of him etc etc etc!" lol

Although I do see him firing Mike if we start slow but I be would shocked if our record is poor enough to force Jerry into a decision before the season ends. Just too much talent for us to start 1-6 or 2-7........

Who knows, maybe that's the same commitment he made to Zimmer. Not saying it is, just saying it's a possibility.

Because they are the most popular team in all of US sports and everyone has an emotional opinion on them. If there is a line on something the Cowboys will/will not do, people will bet on it.

I believe there already is a post-McCarthy plan for the Cowboys that doesn't include firing him in the 2024 mid-season. Bill Belichick in 2025.
Right. MM will not be fired, just as Garrett was not fired. The contract ended. And Jerry did not offer another one.
Same can be for MM if not any playoff success.

As coach Parcells once stated:

If they want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries.”

To coach McCarthy's credit he has been cooking with Garrett's leftovers. Lol
Exactly, he's not really been given a lot of fresh groceries.
Actually there has been a pretty good turnover in players since MM became HC.
Yes he inherited some leftovers and some rotten groceries as well. But he has quite a few fresh ones to work with now.

However, there are still a handful of Garrett's left.

There might be a better chance they stop playing for Dak. Remember how CeeDee looked during the Green Bay game?

In response to your question, though, Jerry also had his next HC waiting on the sideline in 2010, and it made the mid-season firing quite a bit easier. in 2019 and now that same scenario doesn't exist. Best case is he is released without a contract at the end of the season, same as Garrett.
