Dallas Cowboys QB Coach Wade Wilson On Dak, Kellen, Kaep, Romo + 'Being 90 Percent'

...What’s your short explanation on how the project turned into a Pro Bowler?

Well, I’ll tell you it was a long process, but what I would say about Dak, is that he’s way committed to everything that he does. He doesn’t do anything half way, and he got in as a rookie, and was like “I’m taking over” as his rookie group, and then just his work ethic, and all of his leadership skills, all that stuff came to the forefront, and then when he got his opportunity, he won over the veterans.

What was your first impression of Dak Prescott?

I get way too much credit. It’s a collaborative effort. I just want to make sure everybody knows that. But what I would say is that, he kind of had the IT factor. He was not intimidated by anything. Nothing was too big for him. Everything in Starkville, from the coaches, to the staff, to the trainers, we went downtown and had lunch, everybody loved this guy. Like, what’s wrong with him? EVERYBODY loves him. There’s got to be a dark side somewhere. But as we got him, and got to know him, we brought him in and put him on the board in Dallas, and he passed every test. But really just the IT factor, and the way he carried himself, his composure, all of his intangibles, and then he translated those on to the field.

On his quick transition to an NFL quarterback

We had him early on, and his feet were kind of crazy and goofed up a little bit, and had never been under center, never called a play and learned all these words and what they mean, and “What am I supposed to do with all of that?”, and he said “Give me a week”. And that’s my favorite story with Dak Prescott. “Give me a week, and I’ll get my feet right, I’ll master the verbiage, and let’s go to work.” ...

According to Lineman
Best and most professional transition he's ever been a part of? Romo to Prescott
Best arm? Carr
Best brain: Brady
Best mobility? Mariotta

Well, I do agree with him that he gets way too much credit for Dak, just like Jerry getting the credit for the last couple of drafts.

Despite all the chest thumping the fact was we would have taken Cook if he had been there. And thus we would not have taken Dak. We got lucky.

Yeah sometimes its better to be lucky than good.

Sure our draft board was built to where we took Dak at that pick, but its not like we went into that draft saying we just had to have Dak. At that spot he was the best value so they took him, cause they were looking for a QB after missing on 2 of them. Nothing wrong with being lucky, don't know why some want to act like they just knew he would be good......no draft pick is a guarantee, especially in the 4th round. Having a pet cat is far different than being able to evaluate a probowler in the 4th round. If it was that easy, Dak would've been a first rounder, easy.

We should be more happy things worked out, instead of chest thumping like we knew something. Cause really, we have no idea how Lynch or Cook would've worked out here as rookies, and we will never know.

We took what, 9 players, out of the 250 or so total who were drafted league wide last year. Out of however many dozens we had targeted as "draftable" on our own board?

I'd say we can pat ourselves on the back for any of the 9 that come in and play at probowl level as rookies.

Hindsight is always 20/20. Denver made a better offer, and the Raiders jumped us.

What we deserve a pat on the back for that year is not reaching and instead getting the BPA at whatever pick we actually had....cause they could've reached when Cook was gone and got Dak. Then the Tapper situation might not exist or be on the team.

This year wasn't like last year, we went into the draft addressing needs instead of BPA. Lucky (and planned for) this draft was deep in what we needed, but I never want to see a need based draft again unless its under the same circumstances.

Wilson and Linehan wanted to draft Dak earlier. It was the scouts that had him as a 4th rounder.
