Don't knock an engineering degree until you've tried it. 2/3 drop out after the first semester. Calc, Physics, Chem in the same semester is no joke. This isn't watered down Calc for Business Majors either.

Brown finished one of the most difficult programs at one of the top engineering schools in the nation.

Joke all you want ... but to be able to do that AND play football. I give him all my respect.

I like him already.

Your local planning department is full of Civil Engineers. That is not Engineering. My daughter was an Engineering major before changing to pre-law. It was very intense. Despite an 144 IQ and a 1560 on her SAT's she switched. She is now entering Law school and put her soul up for sale.

Sorry Peplaw

I'm a Civil Engineer. Not all of us are surveyors, but you can specialize in that area. Used to be you could be a licensed surveyor in Texas without an engineering degree. Not so any more. I got a general degree, but work in a structural field of residential construction. Other Civil Engineers I personally know work in hyrdrology, hydraulics, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering and traffic impact and analyis with TXDOT. Civil Engineering is a broad major with several specializations. Each one is usually touched on at some point in the course work. Just like Aerospace Engineering. Not everyone who gets that degree works with space ships. :D

I like you too, but belittling or trying to read too much into people's degrees is not right.

I work in software development and some of the best software developers I know have liberal arts degrees. They just chose to major in something that interested them in college rather than chase the money and the hot degree. Meanwhile, the worst people I've ever had to work with are the new computer science graduates who think that now that they have diploma in hand the hard work is over. They also seem to have this sense of entitlement that anyone who works in the field should make $80k a year because they read it in some article in Forbes.

The only thing wrong with a liberal arts degree is that too many people think that there is something wrong with a liberal arts degree.

And often that it teaches things that should have been learned in HS.

Compared to Kareem Larrimore, Antonio Bryant, and Derek Ross, P.E. teachers and surveyors are geniuses.

Thank you Parcells and Ireland (and even you, Jerry, for listening) for finally excluding the knuckleheads.

Let go of my leg, I don't feel comfortable with you pulling so hard.

People there ain’t nothing to see here so put down the tar and feathers; I think he is only kidding.

In your defense at least you got one thing right, Civil engineers aren’t real engineers they are target builders. :)

If I go back it will be for a philosophy degree. I'd cut my own leg off before returning to business school - I've already more than proved to myself how unnecessary a business degree is.

If my son or daughter wants to major in English Lit. or Philosophy, I would have no problem with. I don't necessarily agree with using college as a training ground for a specific career. If that's all you want, save your money and go to a trade school or get a certification in that area. Besides, what you think you want to be at 18 and where you actually end up at 35 are typically two very different things. I just ememphasize to my son that college should be used to hone your critical thinking skills, develop an intellectual curiosity and develop self discipline. That could be done with any major (except criminal justice. :D).

I agree with every last item in this post. I wish more people saw University for the education and the ability to think rather than a trade school.

I saw the University as a place to be social and party... not so much education or a trade school.

Ya, I sensed some folks were taking me seriously. I usually am a hit and run poster, so if you ever see my posts, think about that before taking me seriously.

Marten sounds like he put in some effort. With Finance and marketing he can be a real estate agent.

Ethinic Studies???? What the heck is that? Is it learning the difference
between Korean and Chinese? He can be a tour guide at Disney World.

A civil degree may have helped you avoid that. ;)

every job i have had since graduating has been a cakewalk compared to the rigors of going through college. I'm preparing to leave my field to run a business i started with a friend of mine, probably be able to do that full time in a year.

So someone said, all that education to waste..... i thought no, because i would never have been able to do the things ive had to do the past few years to make this happen without the experience i gained during my college years. Im talking about self discipline, organization skills, learning to prioritize assignments and delay self gratification to get everything done on time.
