I. Congratulations to Troy Aikman, who will call the Cowboys-Giants game for Fox alongside Joe Buck. Throughout the season, there has been some local whining that Aikman's analysis is anti-Cowboys. Now comes word from New York, via Newsday, that Giants fans believe Aikman is tilted toward the Cowboys. Fans, by definition, don't want their broadcasters to play it down the middle. When loyalists in both towns bring out the stethoscopes, a broadcaster must be doing something right.

II. There's no question the network suits, however, are rooting hard for a conference championship menu that features the Colts-Patriots and Cowboys-Packers; It would be a ratings bonanza. Chargers-Jaguars and Giants-Seahawks would be at the bottom of the wish list.

III. Department of dog bites man: The 16 highest-rated shows in D-FW this television season have all been Cowboys games. Sunday's game would have to beat the 43.8 the Thursday night Packers game earned to become No. 1.

IV. But D-FW's fondness for the Cowboys ranked only seventh in home-market passion during the regular season. Average rating here for Cowboys was a 32.9, according to the NFL. Ranked higher were: Steelers (42.4), Packers (41.1), Saints (39.6), Colts (37.7), Patriots (33.8) and Bills (33.4).

V. When it comes to hometown ratings, the Giants are 28th in a 32-team race. To be fair, their 13.9 average in the giant New York market translates into a smidge over 1 million homes, tops in the NFL. The Cowboys 32.9 is good for 801,300 homes.

VI. Then again, everything is relative. All it would take to knock the Giants off the back page of Sunday morning's New York tabloids would be for George Steinbrenner to open his mouth. And nationally, the Giants have the same appeal as, say, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

VII. Oddsmakers have made the over-under on the number of times Tony Romo's gal pal is mentioned during Fox's Cowboys-Giants broadcast at 6½. Over-under on the number of times Fox cameras catch Giants coach Tom Coughlin looking like he just ate bad sushi would have to be at least double that.

VIII. Fox's Terry Bradshaw on which quarterback – Romo or Eli Manning – will be under more scrutiny: "The Cowboys are the No. 1 seed, have home-field advantage and they've played poorly in their last few games, so Romo has more pressure. They [Cowboys] have definitely tapered off offensively towards the end of the season."

I'll take the under.

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman

I've been dissatisfied with this pair for some time and I want to describe why:

Growing up with the excellent Pat Summerall giving the play-by-play has clearly colored my view on this. Summerall was truly great with a minimalist style that let the game come to the viewer. He didn't describe the action unless it was needed and often just used a word or two to describe a play's results (example: Barber for 6 yards).

Joe Buck on the other hand has a serious motor mouth problem and frequently verbally gets in the way. Instead of describing the game and letting me draw my own conclusions, he feels the need to tell me what to think. It's un-necessary and a bit insulting. The "Let's talk about Jessica" thing was (according to Aikman) instigated by Buck and that was nothing but a distraction during the game! I can't think of a worse indictment for a play-by-play man to deliberately create a distraction during the progress of the game. In short, I don't like Joe Buck and I think he's poor at his work.

Now let's move on to Aikman. I'm assuming Aikman controls when a replay gets shown. He NEVER does a replay for a successful defensive play unless it's a turnover. Take a look during the game and notice the number and type of plays that get a replay. It is my opinion that almost every play is a success for offense or defense and merits a replay. A HIGH percentage of the time Aikman does NOT do a replay and runs his mouth about something else. This also distracts from the flow of the game and is a huge drawback.

I get Sunday Ticket so I get to see and listen to many play-by-play/analyst teams every Sunday. Buck and Aikman would rank near the bottom of my list for teams. Stockton and Johnston are a far superior team and, unlike Buck and Aikman, enhance my enjoyment of the game.

:D I've already predicated what stupid Media quote Aikman will start off with. It'll be interesting to see if he is as predictable as I think he is. Love the guy on the field, but he bugs me as an announcer. :D the future of my wing stop order hinges on this game. :) good stuff too.

My only problem with Aikman, and it's a big annoyance to me, is that he goes on and on and on and on about the same player long after the play ends. There are many times during the game that he's still talking about a player that hasn't even been on the field in several plays even though other players have made great plays since then.

I also agree that he tends to focus more on offense than anything. Most of the time he's going on and on about a player, it's an offensive player and by talking non-stop, he basically removes any chance to comment on great defensive plays.

There have been many plays where he's still talking about a great throw or run by a player on first down even when second and third downs yielded no gain or losses and the punt team is on the field.

I do believe he tries his best to be objective but he focuses so much on one player for so long, I can easily see why each side thinks he favors the other side.

I also totally agree that the best announcers are the ones who talk the least and provide more factual information rather than opinions. That is exactly the kind of announcers I want covering big games.

If Giants fans think that Aikman will be tilted towards the Cowboys, then they obviously haven't listened to Aikman call Cowboys games.

I guarantee that in tomorrow's game that there will be a call that goes against the Giants that Aikman will act like is the worst call of all time and the Cowboys got incredibly lucky. I also guarantee that a very obvious call will go against Dallas and Aikman will act like it was a great call, the perfect call, and how well the refs are doing. On top of that, Dallas will get a penalty like a false start and Aikman will go on to talk about how undisciplined the Cowboys are and how it's going to lead to their destruction.

Listening to Aikman's dire attempts to prove that he's not a Cowboys homer is easily one of the top 10 most aggravating things for me when it comes to the NFL.

Hehe, same ole gang always negative Aikman. Why don't you guys just start a "I hate Troy as an announcer" thread each week and get it out of your system.

I'm looking forward to the game and Aikman will do a good job as always.

I'm being honest. He said the same exact thing about that loser Commanders QB Collins when they beat us.

The LEdgend of todd collins just grew. Rewatch the Commanders game.

 Geez we're not even allowed to have an opinion about him as an announcer. Just because you dislike him as an announcer must mean you don't love him as a legend.

My prediction for tomorrow: :D Some of the same people who are saying that the Media is over blowing the Romo Mexican vacation will feel conflicted as Aikman mentions it. :D
