I. Congratulations to Troy Aikman, who will call the Cowboys-Giants game for Fox alongside Joe Buck. Throughout the season, there has been some local whining that Aikman's analysis is anti-Cowboys. Now comes word from New York, via Newsday, that Giants fans believe Aikman is tilted toward the Cowboys. Fans, by definition, don't want their broadcasters to play it down the middle. When loyalists in both towns bring out the stethoscopes, a broadcaster must be doing something right.
II. There's no question the network suits, however, are rooting hard for a conference championship menu that features the Colts-Patriots and Cowboys-Packers; It would be a ratings bonanza. Chargers-Jaguars and Giants-Seahawks would be at the bottom of the wish list.
III. Department of dog bites man: The 16 highest-rated shows in D-FW this television season have all been Cowboys games. Sunday's game would have to beat the 43.8 the Thursday night Packers game earned to become No. 1.
IV. But D-FW's fondness for the Cowboys ranked only seventh in home-market passion during the regular season. Average rating here for Cowboys was a 32.9, according to the NFL. Ranked higher were: Steelers (42.4), Packers (41.1), Saints (39.6), Colts (37.7), Patriots (33.8) and Bills (33.4).
V. When it comes to hometown ratings, the Giants are 28th in a 32-team race. To be fair, their 13.9 average in the giant New York market translates into a smidge over 1 million homes, tops in the NFL. The Cowboys 32.9 is good for 801,300 homes.
VI. Then again, everything is relative. All it would take to knock the Giants off the back page of Sunday morning's New York tabloids would be for George Steinbrenner to open his mouth. And nationally, the Giants have the same appeal as, say, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
VII. Oddsmakers have made the over-under on the number of times Tony Romo's gal pal is mentioned during Fox's Cowboys-Giants broadcast at 6½. Over-under on the number of times Fox cameras catch Giants coach Tom Coughlin looking like he just ate bad sushi would have to be at least double that.
VIII. Fox's Terry Bradshaw on which quarterback – Romo or Eli Manning – will be under more scrutiny: "The Cowboys are the No. 1 seed, have home-field advantage and they've played poorly in their last few games, so Romo has more pressure. They [Cowboys] have definitely tapered off offensively towards the end of the season."
