Atfer signing Beasley, Free and Rivers and tendering Jones and Dunbar, we only had a little over 300k in cap space per OverTheCap.

This money will be used for some of our own players, with Durant possibly being one, and possible FA.

Durant seems likely if there is a deal on the immediate horizon, no need to do this right now to sign a guy we won't be able to sign for 2 days like Hardy, but Durant is here now.

This could be for Murray room

A Carr pay cut can help too

As ugly as it looks on paper, I think they'd prefer to takedown the hit on Romo's cap number this year if possible.
But if they have a player they really want, that's another place to get the room....just kicking that down the road isn't quite as desirable.

Absolutely.

If they get a long-term deal soon and he DOESN'T sign the tag, the team regains that cap space. Dez could easily have a cap hit of $6-7M instead of the almost $13M.

So that begs the question, who was the money created for?

This is just to get back into the black. After Free, Beas, Dunbar and Jones they were -1.5m

They still need to re-do Romo's deal for another 13m and work something out with Carr-4m.

If Tyron Smith restructured to the league minimum that means it's actually about $10M that will spread over 5 years.

His original SB ($10M over 5 yrs) is still counting against the cap. So now with another $10M for another 5 years, his bonus money against the cap is at $4M, plus his league minimum.

His cap hit was $13M, so minus the $4M and league minimum, that should equal that $8M free space.

Smith's cap hit for next season will be $14M with the new restructure as opposed to $12M.

TSmith only had 6m in dead money after this year. This adds another 8m to that, but that will all be gone in the next 4 years.

I didn't even address the dead money because that's really not an issue at this time.

By the time that comes the contract will have been restructured multiple times and we are looking at a new LT.

I know, but it's usually the first thing people bring up. He had such a small signing bonus that you are correct when you say it will happen a few more times.

AFAIK, the Dunbar and Jones money do not count against the cap.
