Romo needs to be next for another 13m.

There is no reason to take a 27m cap hit this year when we need to sign multiple players.

He already has 19m in dead money after this year, another 12m after the restructure and you are barely above the 27m hit they are intentionally taking this year. Plus, they could split that 31m over 2 years and that is worst case if he doesn't play in 2016.

If he plays next year it is back down to 19m. If he plays 2017 its down to 8.9m, hardly a problem

I know, but it's usually the first thing people bring up. He had such a small signing bonus that you are correct when you say it will happen a few more times.

This contract was solely for the purposes of restructuring it when the the team needed the cap room.

They could free up another $7M next year and it still be reasonable for future years.

By 2016, Smith will have made his guaranteed money and then some which is why a similar contract was offered to Bryant because restructuring only makes sense for guys that will be with your club long term.

The problem is that agents/players only look at deals from a 3 yr perspective and the guaranteed money. If they look at with the assurances that Dallas will restructure them then they will hit those guaranteed amounts and then some, plus they will be there longer than the 3 yrs.

I agree 100%. Dez could be knocking down 10-11m a year for the next 10 years if he stays reliable. That is after pocketing 15-20m upfront. Players make it too easy to cut them just to feed their egos.

They are probably doing this so that they have the money in their back pocket if they want to get a deal done right away with someone - not that they are. Dez could take some time and might not even get done this year. So they need cap space right now. This was the easiest one to do and the one that is the best one as well. They are working on Carr for more space. I have a hunch they would prefer to take the hit on romo's contract as soon as possible in order to protect themselves against the possibility that he ends a lot sooner then Jerruh thinks he will.

Estimate of the changes to compare. I used the 2014 minimum which is probably slightly different and I rounded up to 2 million each year prorated so it's not exact.

So, a reasonable progression of events thus far. Free re-signed, Smith restructured.

What's next? I'd probably expect a decision with Carr made in the next week or so.

I think they have made the decision on Carr, you take the pay cut or you are gone!

The only factor is Carr's decision as to which one he takes and also if he has decided to take the pay cut, what does the money look like, perhaps they negotiate the cut price.

Dallas could free up close to another $8M next season if they do it again although that pushes the cap hit for 2017 and 2018 close to $16M.

But if you have Dez on a similar deal you could flip back and forth between the two.

Thanks for putting this table up.

What's with the "who are we signing" business? The team has negative salary cap room without this restructure.
