I disagree with this statement in so many ways. Saying fans have no friggin clue is just wrong. Some do, and some don't. And there are 4 main jobs of the DC -- 1) scheme and teaching it is 40% and making sure player is in position to make plays. He needs to make sure the position coaches are teaching the correct scheme. He needs to be able to communicate up what talents are needed to the HC and GM. 2) Motivating the players is 30%. Players need to believe in his scheme and work extra hard to execute it. This is where interacting with players comes in, but if players can't execute a scheme, either it is time for a new scheme or time for a few new players...which leads to 3) Discipline is about 20% -- this is the part Wade Phillips failed at. This is the part that the new snowflake training camps and the atmosphere at the Star keeps the softness rolling. This is forgotten in most of the failing teams. This is why Bill B wins and his assistants are all smart but never seem to win when they leave --- because he enforces the discipline and no players are bigger than the coach. All know he will get rid of them in a heartbeat if they buck the system. 4) The last part of it is monitoring. The DC needs to monitor the advancement of the players and how well the position coaches are teaching. Monitoring who is getting the job done and who isn't. Players and his assistant coaches.
Accountability, Knowing Responsibility, Discipline...........all needed to win. Jerry should hire a GM - just so he can hold him responsible. Right now the GM isn't responsible, the HC wasn't before MM and I have no clue about now, the players aren't held responsible. Always excuses, but never ------ you are responsible so adapt, improvise, and overcome and we will fix the issue AFTER the job is complete. There is a mission each game, and failure is acceptable apparently.
