The ugly truth: Witten is overpaid

True, he's not a monster he's just a guy that will get you a couple of tough catches every game. I believe if Witten weren't here, Escobar could do the same. People look bad when not given the opportunity. People were criticizing Beasley until Romo actually decided to look his way.

What's it going to be then, eh?

I recall how pissed you were.

Jerry had to agree to it, so he gets the ultimate blame. Or at least him and the scouts that sold him.
And for sure Rob Ryan's thumbprint was all over it as well
Actually, you can blame all of that on Ciskowski too. Whatever makes it easiest.

I actually wonder what Romo would do without his BFF.

Jerry gets blame he is the final word. I have and will continue to defend some of the over the top comments. I have said for a long time on players who have panned out Jerry deserves credit and those who bust are also on him. Not one or the other but both good and bad.

While Carr signing and moving up to get Claiborne have proven to be poor this franchise is sitting at 9-4 and competing and Jerry does deserve credit for that as well

Sit back and wait for all the gifts of guys wanting to be his BFF. lol

I think Romo will continue to look for the TE likely Escobar as his safety net

Overthecap has Melton's salary at $1,250,000 and his cap at $2,359,625 for 2014.

Everyone is sports is slightly overpaid. lol and owners as well.

true but i'm talking from a production and responsibility point of view.

carr has been a disappointment, melton plays minimal snaps for some reason, tyron has been up and down this year, witten is a blocker and has good rapport with romo when the play breaks down but there are many tight ends around the league that are bigger passing threats. romo i'd like to see take a 3 million dollar paycut in the offseason down to 15 million to help sign some of these players. the days of him throwing 40 times a game are over. in fact he's only had >30 passing attempts in 3 games this year. the responsibility has shifted considerably to the oline and run game. i hope he realizes this and gives a little back to have a better end to his career.

No doubt Carr has been a disappointment. Melton came on a sweetheart deal, Dallas does not have to retain him next season so the only cost would be this season at 1,250,000 which is slightly above vet minimum.

Romo deal was in line with other top QB's no doubt high but then QB get paid a lot.

It was a huge mistake that set the team back. Every time I want to feel good about the Garrett regime I think about that offseason. Everyone who agreed with that should have been immediately fired.

If Mo had turned out to be as dominant as Richard Sherman, or Haden from the Browns (or a few other guys) then it wouldn't have been a bad deal. It theoretically shored up a position which requires a high cap number to fill in free agency or to resign a player. So I don't have as much of an issue of the thought process behind it, as you do.

The problem with the trade is that they gave up two players to get him, and it looks like they whiffed. IIRC Mo had a horrible Wonderlic score which sort of indicates that the test may have some validity after all.

I am believer in that if you get paid more than your piers - you should perform better than your piers. Here is look at top 5 paid player for Dallas to keep eye on during stretch run:

Average Salary
1. Tony Romo (Avg Salary = $18 million)
2. Tyron Smith (Avg Salary = 12.2 million)
3. Brandon Carr (Avg Salary = 10 million)
4. Jason Witten (Avg Salary = 7.4 million)
5. Henry Melton (Avg Salary = 6.8 million)

** Sean Lee at $7 million is excluded because he wont be playing in this game.

1, 3, 4, and 5 need to take a paycut.................

Well, there's your problem.

The only "should" is that each guy should perform the best that he can. How exactly does throwing money at a guy magically make him play better? Guys on rookie contracts (like Martin and Fred and Murray) are paid less: do we think they "should" be performing worse than their peers?

We know what, say, Carr can and cannot do. Saying that he "should" do better than that because of the size of his contract accomplishes what, exactly?

Yeah Romo needs to take a pay cut...He's got the best #'s of his career, rating 2nd only to Rogers. Witten is fine and I thought his salary was only around 5m. No Carr then who? We were in dire straits for a cb and Finnigan was the only other fa I believe. His first yr was pretty good, past two not so good obviously...I think he will be cut this offseason. T smith has been a disappointment this year IMO, definitely does not seem to be as dominating as last year...Maybe Martin is just making him look bad.

I don't think AAS is the best way to do this, but here's how those players rank on that basis across the league:

Average Salary
1. Tony Romo (Avg Salary = 8th)
2. Tyron Smith (Avg Salary = 1st)
3. Brandon Carr (Avg Salary = 5th)
4. Jason Witten (Avg Salary = 3rd)
5. Henry Melton (Avg Salary = 6th)

Guys like Carr and Melton are unlikely to see the numbers that make those averages so high. And guys like Smith have recently set the bar for their position and have yet to be overtaken by other good players at their positions. I remember when Romo's contract was considered ridiculous for example, and now it's got him a bit lower than where he probably ranks as a player. New deals push guys forward and then they start the process of falling back to the pack as they get overtaken by bigger contracts at their respective positions.

romo i'd like to see take a 3 million dollar paycut

It's easy to say someone else should take a paycut. But in this case I think you are correct in saying Romo should. At some point he has to realize he has a short term future and it would be in his best interest to give back to the Cowboys so they can improve the roster to help him win a championship.

im just comparing his responsibility now compared to 2 years ago when he signed the new deal.

in 2012 these were his pass attempts in each game.

He's only broken 30 attempts in 3 games. 2 years ago he would be lucky if he didn't get 35+ attempts in the game. His responsibility and workload has dropped dramatically. He doesn't even practice on Wednesdays anymore. Hopefully he realizes this and gives back. Too many key pieces need to be signed. I don't want us to take a step back next year.

Remember how excited everyone was when it happened?

Then we followed that whopper with the Morris Claiborne trade.

It reminded me of drafting Quincy Carter and then....oh yeah, you think that was bad? watch this.....taking Tony Dixon with the other 2nd round pick.

That 2012 offseason was one of the worst in the Jerry era. Huge resources absolutely wasted and I don't even think they know how flawed that philosophy was. They probably just think they targeted the wrong players.

What was wrong with what they did? They drafted the best cornerback in the draft and signed the best cornerback in the draft? Sometimes you hit and sometimes you don't. Seahawks traded a 1st, 3rd and 7th round pick but drafted Sherman in the 5th round. You hit and you miss.
