dallas/washington 1999 8:00 central *Merge*

been so long since i've seen Aikman throw. I forgot how quick his release was. Whew!!!

This was an interesting game to watch, kind of sad knowing our team was going into decline...

We still had a lot of good players on the 1999 team but you could see the results of the poor drafting in 1995, 1996 and 1997...

Stiffs like Bjornson, Charlie Williams, Kenny Wheaton, Everrett McIver, Pittman, Ekuban, Darren Hambrick... cast offs like Spellman and Warren... if Jerry had a personnel man and drafted average this team could have ran deep into the playoffs...

Can you imagine picking Tony Brackens in the 96 draft and pairing him up with Ellis at defensive end, freeing us up not to waste a pick on Ekuban which could have gotten us a good player elsewhere maybe a decent offensive lineman or cornerback.

Other than Woodson and the injured and aging Deion and Pup our secondary was short on talent.... David LaFleur, while a big target just wasn't enough of an impact player relative to his draft position, not even close to the skills, fluidness or quickness of Witten...

The 81 we had that year couldn't catch for s*it.

yeah, everyone remembers the Ismail TD to win the game...but we called the exact same play earlier in the game, he was wide open, ball hits him right in the hands and he dropped it

but Aikman couldnt throw a deep ball

Argh, I forgot to record this last night... :bang2:

I was on the road that day and literally the first play I saw of it when I arrived was the bomb to Rocket for the win.

It is amazing how many scrubs were on that team, though, Kind of makes you appreciate the team we have today.

let me know if you want it cl. I will put it on disc sometime this week or next..

Watched the whole 1999 Commanders/Cowboys game on NFL channel replay. Nostalgia. Aikman had some bad picks. Gailey made some pretty bad coaching decisions regarding Michael Irvin. He wasn't in on a number of 3rd downs.

Hehe. Flo jumped offside. He also looks significantly better this year than he did in that 1999 game, although he wasn't bad.

Man that was a funny game. when we tied game at the end, I forgot Cunningham (I think) doinked the extra point off the upright and in. We would have lost the game after the 21 point comeback in the 4th and then long TD pass to the Rocket in OT.

Emmitt could still hit the hole quick and make those amazingly quick decisions in those days. He also had decent outside speed then still. That guys' vision was outstanding.

Ellis was in his 2nd year and had 2 sacks. 2 players, just Ellis and Flo, out of 53 still remain on this team.

Our safeties made some bad plays in coverage but also made big plays in the game. George Teague made a number of big plays and also missed a few plays.

Our LB's were FAST and small. We couldn't get to the QB fast enough then either, just like from 2000-2005.

Was a fun game!

You can say that again! He was more a monster than a beast!

I can't remember ever seeing anyone as fast as Coakley at LB for how stocky he was. He wasn't very tall, but the guy was pure muscle. Side to side and catching a guy from behind, there wasn't anyone better at the time. Always liked him as a player. He played his gutts out for the Cowboys, as did Dat. Godfrey was an excellend MLB as well, and was one of the worst salary cap casualties the team ever lost. He was just hitting his prime when he left Dallas.

Gailey did make some really bizarre coaching decisions in that game. 3rd and 8 in the 3rd quarter trailing by 14 and Irvin is on the sidelines.

I felt bad for Aikman, he has Irvin on the sidelines and a bunch of scrubs like E. Mills on the field running terrible routes.

His play calling was really interesting as well. Dallas had been running the ball well all game, yet in the third quarter with the score 14-13 he came out passing on consecutive possessions and ended up punting. Then later in the 3rd when down by 21 he runs the ball 9 straight times.

Coakley was fast, he ran WRs on a few occassions.

Of coarse they also made Connell look like Randy Moss.

The think that stood out to me was what the DBs were allowed to get away with then. I was thinking the "no contact after 5 yards" rule was in effect in '99. That's not that long ago. But I guess it wasn't because DBs were checking and nudging all the way down the field.

That's the truth, for sure. Watching any of his games, you're instantly amazed at his patience and vision (unless you're an idiot), even in 2000.

Yeah, i was going to type that about the running game as well. Good comment. I totally agree. Emmitt was on fire, and even Warren was looking very quick and cutting well. Emmitt had a hole almost every time, not like at the end of his career when the oline couldn't open a sliver of daylight for him and he'd thunk into a wall. Also, nobody was touching him in the backfield in that game, slowing him down. They should have stuck with the run game far more since the Commanders were getting good pressure and our mid range passing plays didn't look very good at all. I think we had 3 3 and outs in a row or close to it, and mostly because of the passing attempts.

As accurate as Aikman was (and that wasn't even one of his better games despite all the TD's), it's interesting watching how Romo is so good at buying time in the pocket. Aikman never had Romo's elusiveness on his spriest day. He was a true pocket passer (and one of the greatest, don't get me wrong, what a leader!). Aikman tried to force a few passes in that game as well!

As someone else posted, the direct snaps were kinda clever. Might want to try one of those with Julius one day.

The Hambrick brothers and Kavika Pittman alone had enough "scrubbing power" to clean all the toilets/concession stands in the Deadskins stadium.

Still, that team had alot of talent to hide it's deficiencies, shame things had to play out the way they did.

down by 21 in 4th quarter to come back and win in overtime good times good times also that was dan sniders first game as a Commander owner:lmao2: :lmao2:

Dang it I missed it

That game was pretty much our last stand as the team of the 90s. A few weeks later, Tim Hauck's head shot ended Irvin's career and we went downhill from there.

Damn we had some bad corners in that game. Charlies Williams makes Jacques Reeves look like Deion Sanders.

Reeves has been alright though so far this season other than the start agaisnt philly.

Its kinda funny Sanders didn't play that game.
