does that mean we wont pick up reggie nelson if he's on the board at 22?!
i really hope not.

:bang2:

It means that it hopefully gives us more flexibility. We can go after a guy like Nelson (whom I think will be already snatched up by then and go to the Panthers) or the player we like best at #22 or we can trade down. We don't have to have our hands forced and get a player at guard, tackle or safety because we don't feel comfortable there. And for all of the safety talk in the first round, teams have routinely found quality safeties in rounds 2-5 (Hamlin was a former 2nd round pick himself). So I really don't see the absolute need to look at safety in the first round.

Also, I think if Hamlin and Watkins work out reasonably well, we could make them safeties in the nickel and move Roy to LB like the Steelers do with Polamalu and the Cards do with Wilson. Roy would be far, far better in coverage and in blitzing that what we got out of James and Burnett in the nickel package last season.

Draft the best available player.

If that's Nelson.....then we draft him.
If the BPA is Meahem, then draft him.
If the BPA is Houston, then draft him.....

:hammer:

Agree 100%. Finally we don't have to fill holes in the first round.

ignore the uneducated one. He hates our entire secondary because Henry banged his old lady.

Give me a freaking break. One yard?

How about this........I think we have a better defense because we only allowed 350 points and they allowed 376 last year. That is what wins or loses games not yards allowed.

If it makes you feel any better...Dallas beat out Detroit by less than a yard.

# 22 Houston 215.3 YPG
# 23 Washington 218.2 YPG
# 24 Dallas 219.1 YPG
# 25 Detroit 220.0 YPG

I don't know that signing Hamlin to a 1 yr deal is going to fix our problems.

I think drafting a CB in the 1st/2nd round will start the healing....

Weaknesses:
Has less than 11/2 seasons of Division I starting experience...Size is only average and he does not have the ideal bulk that you would prefer...Intelligence is a huge issue and he was not known to be a very good student...Not a great tackler and is often times more worried about delivering a knockout blow than he is wrapping up...He can be physically overmatched in-the-box...Has some durability concerns

That concerns me. This guy seems like Keith Davis from a bigger school.

Nelson couldnt be more of a different player than keith davis. Nelson is a playmaker and has a nose for the ball when its in the air, a real coverage "ballhawk"; davis is pretty much a big hitting run support safety and thats it.

I have been hoping for reggie nelson since the romo snap. All those of us in this Nelson camp can do is hope that we would take him if he's there as a nickel back, as aaron glenn and anthony henry arent getting any younger. Realistically, its not gonna happen though, and i think we are more likely to draft a CB or another pass rusher.

I agree with the poster that said he hopes Nelson is off the board so that he wont have to suffer through watching us pass up this excellent safety talent!

I don't think that Hamlin "solves" our safety issue. I'm not sure he's an upgrade over Watkins or Davis.

Now, if he returns to his 2005 form, then yes.

If anything, I think this signing allows us to do what I think the better teams in the NFL do with the draft.

Draft the best available player.

That's exactly what this signing does. It doesn't preclude us from taking a safety with the pick. What it does is eliminate any glaring holes on the team, making it possible to draft the BPA rather than reaching for a need position (a draft day killer). I have no doubt that the Cowboys have positioned themselves, with this signing to truly building towards the future of this team. With the exception of a blockbuster player falling to us, there's a chance that our #1 draft pick may not even start for us this year, but rather contribute on a smaller scale. That's NOT a bad thing. It means that our talent base solid enough to NOT have to count on a rookie to contribute significantly to be successful.

That being said, I agree with the originally quoted post. The best player available will be taken whether that player is an O-lineman, WR, CB, S, DT, RB, QB, DE, LB (no more TEs). If it so happens that we are in a spot to trade that pick for another team's #1 the following year (ala JP Losman) then we are stocked enough to do that comfortably. We are in the best position going into this draft that we have been in for a VERY long time. Things are turning around for this team BIG TIME.

He has the brains Watkins doesn't have right now. He can make the calls Watkins can't. He can gets lined up right and Watkins can't.

By the start of 2008 season I really hope Watkins will be in that position. Hopefully he will watch and lean enough between now and then to be able to step in and prove himself.
