Why not?
He had some success here. If not for injuries he would still be a lead LB.
He would have been even better in Zimmer's defense.
LVE was a below average LB that was injury prone. His rookie year was his best. A couple seasons he was an outright disaster.

Wilson is not so great in coverage, though. How his traits fit into Mike Zimmer's scheme is yet to be seen. He should be a lock for this roster, but even if he isn't, I wouldn't expect him to be released.

The Cowboys will keep him on the roster or attempt to trade him, since releasing him would result in a dead cap hit over $10 million. This will help run defense and at safety.

Zimmer has stuck with salary at safety as well...Malik Hooker might actually be the safest bet to make the roster because of his skills in coverage. Dallas doesn't really have anyone else that has proven to be on his level as a single-high safety.

Hooker, a former 1st round pick of the Indianapolis Colts in 2017, has something that none of the other safeties have: blue chip draft status. The rest of the safeties on the roster weren't drafted in the top five rounds, and most were undrafted.

Yet another undrafted free agent to make the roster, Markquese Bell is switching back to his original position for 2024.

Bell was thrust into a linebacker unit that was starving for talent, and honestly, just starving for warm bodies. The Cowboys' linebacker room was decimated by injuries to DeMarvion Overshown and Leighton Vander Esch. This will help run defense as well.

OXNARD, Calif. — Adversity is the knife designed to carve away our outer layers to reveal who we truly are, if we allow it, and Damone Clark understands this all too well. He went from an All-American linebacker and national champion at LSU, and likely top-15 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, to an unexpected spinal fusion surgery that offseason that led to him being selected in the fourth round.

But, as Fate would have it, it was the Dallas Cowboys who discovered the issue in his neck during the pre-draft process before also repairing it and, ultimately, drafting him in April — Clark then bucking the odds by returning to the field only six months later.

Fast forward to 2023 and Clark found himself being, almost literally, the only linebacker on the active roster before it was all said-and-done, operating on an island with safeties attempting to help at the position; and then his beloved mentor, Leighton Vander Esch, was forced into medical retirement by yet another neck injury of his own.

He now finds himself surrounded by a stable of other talent, including former First-Team All-Pro linebacker Eric Kendricks and DeMarvion Overshown, now returned from a redshirt season due to a torn ACL, rookie third-round pick Marist Liufau, UFL standout Willie Harvey Jr. and more...

Watching Clark wear #18 and fly around making plays for LSU made me figure the only thing holding him back was the neck.

Then he gets on the field faster than anyone would have thought, but it looked like he got pushed around quite a bit, and or was in the wrong spot too often.

Maybe that was about the scheme, or that management refuses to do anything about the DT problem. The most embarrassing playoff loss in franchise history didn’t change that, yet some of you continue to wonder why others have no faith in the two clowns.

Get them corners and receivers locked up Jerry. Remember you “won the off-season” last year with Cooks and Gilmore. Not that those two didn’t help, but the inside out philosophy is going to ultimately fail against better teams every time.

Bell is moving back to his natural safety position. He is a mini-clone of Donovan Wilson but with a little more skill in coverage. It will be interesting to see what his role in Zimmer's defense will be.

I've heard them claim on the podcasts that Zimmer really likes Wilson and it was in response to questions about him being replaced by Juanyeh Thomas who has very good coverage and ball skills. Marquese Bell is a shallow zone type coverage guy, he isn't going to be good covering in the back half of the field because of a lack of foot speed. I still don't know if he makes this team.

Good observations. It although fully supports team directions and camp direction in competition. Bell was added as an example of defense advancement, leadership, and he still produced against 300 pound linemen. He has coverage skills where he is added.

The Quinn scheme sucked. Get a big lead and get pressure. That was his thing. Get up field. A MLB is dead there especially if there is no gap control at the DT and help MLBs staying clean. Zero adjustment too when teams decided to attack in the middle of the field. Zimmer’s defense will be much more sophisticated and LBs typically thrive in it.

With Zimmer in charge, Smith will return to a bigger, block-absorbing role in the Cowboys' defense. Again, it’s about maintaining that wall. Smith had some good practices last week and while it’s not showing up in any overpowering one-on-one drills, his effectiveness has been on full display in team snaps. Smith is taking on blocks and allowing his linebackers to get clean shots at ball carriers. Suddenly Damone Clark and DeMarvion Overshown look like stud linebackers because they don’t have to fight through blocks as much. Don’t look now, but Smith is actually doing his job well.

This should NOT be overlooked.

I'm excited to watch Clark. Hope he stays healthy. As for Lee, is there a way we can have him as the LBers coach?

This is all a joke. I mean Lee is mentoring Clarke via phone, freaking wonderful. LVE is mentoring Clarke via Zoom, again freaking wonderful. Love both but it’s really just so over the top!
