Dan Connor anyone?

Would be a GREAT pickup imo. Under the radar, but he played real well in Carolina. We need at least 3 MLBs anyways, regardless of whose starting. Would be a great fit.

100% agree

Worse case scenario, we have some quality depth. It's not unprecedented, a few years ago we took a LB from Tennessee, his name slips my mind, he never was a starter here, but played great in sub packages.

I was talking about his desire to start. Which would mean he's looking for starter money. If we give him that, he's pretty much a lock starter.

That could be a great thing if Carter isn't ready or if he's heading to bustville. It could also be a bad thing if Carter is legit and ready to make an impact. Now you have a progress stopper on your hands. If you bench him, then you have a high priced backup who probably won't be too happy about it.

If I'm the GM I'd look to the coaching staff and ask them what they think of Carter after seeing him this year. If the reports are glowing, I'd pass on this move. Get your quality depth in the draft.

agreed. Worse case scenario is you have two hard nose football players who clean out some of the dead wood personalities on this defense.

Kevin Burnett. Who then went to San Diego and had a pretty nice run.

Connor would be great, and based on last year's stats could be an immediate upgrade to James and Brooking. Not sure how bad Carolina wants him with Beason there.

According to PFF, here are some stats from last year from ILB who played at least 25% of plays.

Run Stop % (out of 46 ILB)

Connor - 10th
Lee - 13th
Brooking - 33rd
James - 44th

Pass Rush Productivity (out of 50 ILB)

Connor - 8th
Lee - 15th
Brooking - 37th
James - 44th

Tackling Efficiency (out of 50 ILB)

James - 11th
Connor - 14th
Lee - 25th
Brooking - 33rd

Coverage (out of 50 ILB)

Connor - 9th
James - 23rd
Brooking - 44th
Lee - 47th

Wow I'd be so pumped if we can pick him up. One thing penn state has been doing for years is making quality linebackers

Actually, there is one other thing they have been doing for years.

First of all, we have to replace Bradie and Brooking. That's two LBs who got a lot of snaps between them that have to be replaced.

Second of all, both Lee and Carter have missed an inordinate amount of time with injury the last several years. Depth is absolutely critical as it would be extremely unwise to just happily believe they're going to make it through a 16 game season unscathed based on nothing but blind optimism.

Third of all, we're going to get even more hybrid schemes and 4-3 looks this year, so pretty good chance we'll see a lot of Connor, Lee and Carter on the field at the same time.

no doubt we'll be playing a 4-3 and some 4-6, it's about time.

"ba dum tish!"

it never gets old :laugh2:

Although I would like this move, this is a negative sign about Bruce Carter's progress and what the team thinks of him. Jerry was just saying a couple weeks ago that he thinks Carter-Lee could be our Bowman-Willis, maybe he should have talked to the coaches before making a statement like that.

i agree but i get the feeling that people are reading this rumor as if jerry said it himself . it reads more like a writer trying to connect the dots on where a guy might land. There's going to be a ton of speculation like this the next 2 weeks we fans love and need the gossip ya know? :D

I am completely ignorant when it comes to the 4-3 and I understand that we run multiple fronts, but if Connor was signed and Carter was everything we want him to be would we go to a 4-3. If we were to go to a 4-3 would our LBs be Ware Lee, Connor, Carter? Would Ware be a DE? :) - The more LBs the better IMO

In a 43, Ware would be our weakside DE (Charles Haley's spot), and Spencer - if we still have him - would be the strongside DE.

Assuming we signed Connor, he would likely be the MLB with Carter and Lee manning the outside linebacker spots (probably would have Carter at the strongside because of his very good coverage ability and Lee at the weakside spot).

This.

Conner would not make sense because of his age. That is, unless the Cowboys are moving to a 4-3 or are just not convinced about Carter's ability. That would be a shame.

Or get experience with Bart Scott. :D

.........you KNOW I agree with 99% of your takes on here RS.....but not this time. We need better players on this squad and more COMPETITION...no one should be comfortable, that includes Carter: what has he shown? Granted it's not his fault, but.........Connor, Lee and Carter would be NICE. Plenty of playing time for everyone: especially with Lee's injury history: SIGN HIM JERRAH!!!!!!!!!!!;)

....BINGO: which is why I like the idea
