So, the stats say Danny White had 2 receiving TDs in his career. Anyone old enough to remember the plays? ;)

Yep. I seen them both. He caught one against the Raiders in '83 and one against the Browns in '85 :D

Yep. I remember them too. Hopefully, Phoenix-Talon is reading this thread. White was the recipient of those two touchdowns via gadget plays.

They were great plays!

One was by Ron Springs in 1983 for 15 yards. It was early in a game against the Raiders, and even though we lost the game 40-38, it was a great game to watch.

The other was by James Jones in 1985 for 12 yards against the Browns. We won that game 20-7.

Landry was known for running gadget plays, especially the HB-Option pass. Dan Reeves and Calvin Hill were especially good at it.

Anyone old enough? lol. You act like White played in the 1800's.

I'm 37, you just made me feel like I'm 97, lol.

And I remember the plays too.

'83 - 15 yard pass from Ron Springs. He hands off the Springs and then fades towards the goalline and catches the TD pass.

'85 - 12 yards pass from James Jones. Same type of play as before.

Danny White was also a great punter...Even when he faked one!

White never gets the props he deserves because he lost in three straight NFC Championship games in 1980, 1981 and 1982.

I've never understood why more teams don't run the fake punt more often. To me that would keep teams from setting up for a big return as easily if they had to be concerned that the punter might run for the 1st down. So many times, it looks as if the punter could easily run for much more than the needed yardage without even being touched because the return team has simply turned around and sprinted back to setup for the return.

White was such a smart player and good athlete that Landry had so much confidence in him that it was purely his option to run the fake. If he saw that it was there he had the ok to take off with it.

The same with the pass out of the punt formation...If the gunner was left uncovered by the other team it was an automatic to look for a pass from White. I only remember that happening once but it was a beautiful rainbow pass to Benny Barnes for about 40 yards that almost went for a TD. I forget who it was against.

It would have been against the Cardinals on Thanksgiving Day in 1976, a 43-yard reception. We won 19-14 that day.

Barnes also caught a 37-yard pass in 1974 against the Commanders, coincidentally, also on Thanksgiving Day! We won that game 24-23 in the game Clint Longley came in and brought us from behind for the win. That pass was from punter Duane Carrell.

The only bummer was that Barnes didn't score on either reception but we went on to win both games so in the end it didn't matter I guess.

No sir, just Danny.

As far as I was able to determine, Staubach (1 for -13) and Aikman (2 for -19) are the only other Cowboys QBs to catch a pass, but obviously neither scored on them as all 3 receptions were for negative yardage.

White's 2 TD receptions make him unique in Cowboys QB history.

You are correct on the other two QBs to catch a pass. I expect Romo to this year in the Razorback.

not as a cowboy, but brad johnson is the only QB to ever throw and catch for a touchdown in a single play.

Were those the hand-offs out of the shout gun formation where Danny would float out to the opposite sideline of the run motion?

The guy is so obscure that his name doesn't even register on the Pro football reference web site, and you found a picture of him.

You amaze me bb. You amaze me.

Yes. A QB can only be an eligible receiver while in the shotgun formation.

I think Staubach's and Aikman's receptions were off of batted passes, which is why they went for negative yards.

I did not know that was a rule. Learn something new everyday I guess.

Unfortunately I didn't start watching the Cowboys with my dad until 1988 so I missed the two White TD catches. That's a real bummer.
