Arkin seems to be finally getting it, and I hope he pushes Bernadeau for the RG spot. Do you think he could be a future starter? I'm hoping he's a solid fit for our zone-blocking scheme...

Tyron Smith
Ronald Leary
Travis Frederick
David Arkin
Doug Free

I wouldn't mind that lineup and we would have solid depth with Costa, Kowalski, Bernadeau, etc.

Well, it's sure nice to hear he's playing we'll so far, and it would be nice to see if he can take over a starting position. Have to see how he plays in the PS games, though.

I don't know if Arkin will ever start a game for us. But if reps help he should be all pro. And he must be tougher than a nickel steak because he never misses a practice.

Yeah, and it would be nice if the Cowboys hit on an offensive lineman that wasn't drafted in the 1st round! Arguably other than Doug Free, the Cowboys haven't hit on any mid-round OL in this century.

Not counting Flozell and Gurode because they were 2nd rounders...

Definitely. Even if you do count Flo and Gurode, the track record isn't all that stellar.

Even some 2nd rounders have busted. Jacob Rodgers & Solomon Page. I'm not sure what went wrong with Page. He started for awhile and then a few years in just cratered. He didn't even get picked up by another team.

I'm happy to see Arkin getting positive press and I love the idea of more competition. We'll see where Ski, Leary, and Arkin fit.

You're wrong. This millennium. That's 10 times worse.
I had hope for Arkin until he was not even activated once last year despite all the trouble on the O line. Maybe he is a very late bloomer - but he appears to only be a challenger because we have JAGS otherwise.

JAGs would be an improvement over last year.

Yep, it's good to hear some positives about him even though it's early. I'd be happy if between Killer, Leary and Arkin we get one good starter this year and the others as solid backups.

I think Arkin had troubles with the scheme change last year honestly. Really, all the guys had problems with it... and that isn't a surprise. It was way different than what Houck was doing in previous seasons.

By the end of last year, everyone on the line was playing much better and I think it was in large part because they were all finally getting down what Callahan was wanting from them. I've been saying since the end of 2012 that the line is going to have a big jump in production simply because it will be year 2 in Bill's system. I honestly think that added benefit is way, way underestimated around here and in the media.

As from Arkin himself... he has smarts, decent agility, and has been lauded for his tenacity and his mean, aggressive nature. It has been his strength and (IMO) his struggles with what he was being asked to do that has prevented him from producing on the field. Now, having been in an NFL strength program for a couple of years and having a year to learn Callahan's system, it honestly would be no big surprise for him to take a really big jump in performance and compete for a starting position.

Heck, I wouldn't be too shocked to see him starting. There have been offensive linemen from bigger schools that didn't have a lock-out their rookie season, and that didn't switch scheme's in their second year, who still didn't start until year 3 or 4.

If Dallas hadn't had so many injuries and have such a big need at G the last couple of years, then we fans might have actually had patience with him and allowed a small school OL a few years to mature, get stronger and learn to play in the NFL.

Didn't take long for the first positive comments on Arkin to get the bandwagon going. I think I'll wait for one of the backseats. I think this is very much premature. I'll just go ahead and say it. David Arkin will not be a starter for this team in 2013 - no way, no how.

You are most likely correct. But he does have some positives and if he can get stronger in year 2 of Callahan's system, I wouldn't be shocked if he did start.

Still, the odds are pretty long against it, so I'd say your prediction is pretty safe.

I don't really know what Dallas/Callahan wants in their lineman. Lots of ZBS talk this year. That conjures thoughts of smaller mobile guys. But I've heard the Talkin Cowboys gang (not that they're the perfect source) say that the coaches definitely want size at Guard. That's why they think its probably still Livings/Bern/Leary as the primary contenders. And its admittedly part of why I think Costa/Kowalski/Arkin are at a disadvantage even if they end up as better technicians.

But given who is on the roster (we can't suddenly bring in a talent upgrade) I think what everyone wants (coaches included) is to get all the competitors on the field, healthy, to sort this out. Last year it was simply who's healthy enough, or not completely raw, or not learning a new position. This year, with Livings now back, and Leary/Bernadeau soon to follow we should have our full complement of competitors in play including the young guys (Leary, Kowlaski, Costa, Arkin) having another year under their belt (albeit practice squad or IR).

I am hopeful for improvement. But how much and how soon remains to be seen.

Arkin starting would be one of the great player comebacks in Cowboys history.

By the last preseason game a year ago virtually everyone was down on Arkin.

I don't know when all the ZBS started but they have said they are going to play power and zone blocking. They didn't say how much though. :)

Arkin's major issue last year looked to be "no anchor". At least that is what jumped off the screen. Now perhaps that was in part because of his need to snap the ball first - I don't know. If the guy has figured out how to get the anchor problem fixed though, then it would at minimum be interesting to see what he could do. It sure appears that he has battled his backside off to make it. I would hope that will pay some dividends for him.
