I don't know when all the ZBS started but they have said they are going to play power and zone blocking. They didn't say how much though. :)

I think fans have been confused as to just what Dallas O-line stratgey has been since Garrett took over. I am hoping the coaches and FO are not as confused.

I sure as heck hope so. This has been one of Garrett's biggest HAs. He just had to almost start over and our record has reflected it. Pass defense is right up there, too, though.

Arkin's major issue last year looked to be "no anchor". At least that is what jumped off the screen. Now perhaps that was in part because of his need to snap the ball first - I don't know. If the guy has figured out how to get the anchor problem fixed though, then it would at minimum be interesting to see what he could do. It sure appears that he has battled his backside off to make it. I would hope that will pay some dividends for him.

He really did have trouble anchoring last year. However, read what Rafael Vela (who is at camp writing this) wrote about Arkin today:

-- David Arkin: We're still waiting for Mackenzy Bernadeau to challenge him but at the moment Arkin is the starting right guard. Phil Costa is working at this position, but he's taking all his reps with the 2nd unit. Arkin has always been able to pull and the Cowboys are using his quicks to flip their run balance. In their glory days, they put Nate Newton, their best power puller, at left guard and ran power, their inside counter, to the right, behind RT Erik Williams, their best straight-line blocking tackle.

These days, that power OT is LT Tyron Smith. Dallas is now running power, for the first week anyway, primarily to the left, with Arkin pulling behind Smith.

Arkin needs more consistency hitting his targets on the move, but he looks much stronger in his lower half and is anchoring much better than he did last year, when he was walked back in the pocket by bull rushers.

It doesn't make it a sure thing, but this time last year, Vela had absolutely nothing good to say about Arkin. The guy has certainly improved. How much is the question.

Good news is better than bad. :D I'll take good news on Arkin all day everyday and twice on Sunday. Doesn't make it predictive but sure looks like competition.

The more competition the better... Besides Smith.. All other jobs should be up for grabs..

miracles do happen

we may have developed a decent guard for the first time since.......

OK let me think on this......

Thinking on it this is the first guard would come from inhouse since LARRY ALLEN. Which is really sad.....

everyone seems to be obsessed with pulling and getting to the second level

A guards FIRST responsibility is being able to anchor against a bull rush and go and get a push on the guy in front of him. That is where Arkin needs to prove himself.

I agree that he needs to anchor first and foremost. However, I have read in more than one place that his strength is much, much better this year. If he improves there, then we have developed a decent guard because he has the toughness, meaness, agility, and footwork to be a good one.

I'm not counting on it by any means... but it is good to hear and gives me hope that he can do it.

Appreciate the Vela quote. I think he does a pretty fair job. Looking forward to the competition. We ought to get an improved unit out of all this.

I think Arkin needs to anchor when he needs to and be mobile when he needs to. He doesn't have just one task to perform well.

Vela said in an article today Arkin is able to anchor this year and not get walked back. I'd need to see it versus some of the better DT's but Vela is one of the most credible and balanced bloggers out there.

Right, that's what I'm saying. Arkin had the other things he needs (agility, motor, aggressiveness, smarts) he just needed to get stronger (and learn Callahan's scheme). Now it appears he has... at least some.

Will it be enough? We should find out pretty soon. I'm pulling for the guy because he has the perfect make-up and movement skills.

I think Arkin had troubles with the scheme change last year honestly. Really, all the guys had problems with it... and that isn't a surprise. It was way different than what Houck was doing in previous seasons.

By the end of last year, everyone on the line was playing much better and I think it was in large part because they were all finally getting down what Callahan was wanting from them. I've been saying since the end of 2012 that the line is going to have a big jump in production simply because it will be year 2 in Bill's system. I honestly think that added benefit is way, way underestimated around here and in the media.

As from Arkin himself... he has smarts, decent agility, and has been lauded for his tenacity and his mean, aggressive nature. It has been his strength and (IMO) his struggles with what he was being asked to do that has prevented him from producing on the field. Now, having been in an NFL strength program for a couple of years and having a year to learn Callahan's system, it honestly would be no big surprise for him to take a really big jump in performance and compete for a starting position.

Heck, I wouldn't be too shocked to see him starting. There have been offensive linemen from bigger schools that didn't have a lock-out their rookie season, and that didn't switch scheme's in their second year, who still didn't start until year 3 or 4.

If Dallas hadn't had so many injuries and have such a big need at G the last couple of years, then we fans might have actually had patience with him and allowed a small school OL a few years to mature, get stronger and learn to play in the NFL.

I actually think he has a good chance of starting. I remember last year, I was really the only one giving the guy a chance.

CowboyMcCoy strikes again!

Arkin seems to be finally getting it, and I hope he pushes Bernadeau for the RG spot. Do you think he could be a future starter? I'm hoping he's a solid fit for our zone-blocking scheme...

Tyron Smith
Ronald Leary
Travis Frederick
David Arkin
Doug Free

I wouldn't mind that lineup and we would have solid depth with Costa, Kowalski, Bernadeau, etc.

This might be the worst starting OL I have ever seen projected LOL
