David Buehler won't face competition for Cowboys kicker job

With Nick Folk in New York and Matt Stover long gone, many in Dallas have wondered who the Cowboys will bring in to challenge second-year pro David Buehler for the placekicking job.

The answer, it turns out, is no one.

The fifth-round pick from last season will be given every opportunity to not screw up his starting job. Buehler won't face any serious competition unless he starts struggling, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.

Buehler did a nice job as a kickoff specialist as a rookie.

I would venture to say that after all our issues at kicker last year, quite a few fans do.

Thats not entirely true. He's competing against a veteran kicker that isnt on this roster (and wont be, if Buehler shows he can do the job during TC & Preseason)

They dont need to bring a vet in to "compete" now, because Buehler needs all the opportunities he can get.

Why is Matt Stover long gone?

Everything I've heard about Connor Hughes is that he's very accurate and the reason he hasn't made an nfl roster is because he can't kickoff very well.

I think Flozel Adams and Keith Hamlin would argu about positons being handed out and no competition on the roster. Competition is all around you, it just doesnt have to be announced.

You dont think Flozel was competing with Free??? Why do you think the coaches were comfortable in releasing Flo??? Could it be because they watched Free in multiple games last year???

There was never an official announcement that Flo and Free were competiting for the same job, but they were.

Great perspective!!! I totally agree. But has anyone at VL told him? Even if not, this kid seems bright enough to figure as much on his own. rather than getting bent out of shape over his competition (or lack of) in camp, I think it's good he won't be sharing any reprs with other kickers. This way he gets all the reps and total opportunity to refine his game and secure his spot.

They hedged their bet a little on Free by trading for Barron.

Ball and Buehler have to perform well, or niether will be a starter. Both might be beaten out by someone here (Hamlin in Ball's case, Hughes in Buehlers case) or could be replaced by someone not on the roster currently.

I have no problem with Dallas giving Buehler every oppertunity through out the training camp and pre season. He need the reps and in the end if they do not feel comfortable with him they will bring in another kicker.
