Daviyon Nixon

Think Barmore would be better for us. It’s not that I don’t like Nixon but he doesn’t look that big it the video clips. I’m worried about his size playing in the trenches in the NFL. Would love for one of the QBs to fall and come away with an extra 2nd, that might be the only way we get one of these guys and still have the ability to get a CB and Safety.
Barmore is lighter than Nixon.
Nixon is 6'3" and 305 but looks light because like Tyron Smith he carries no bodyfat at that size.
Barmore is taller at 6'5" and about 300 tops.

Both guys are 3T who can;t handle NFL double teams.
The are 1 gap guys.

The only true 2 gap guy I am aware of is Akim McNeill.

Exactly right. Nixon just doesn’t carry a lot in his midsection.

You should take a look at Tyler Shelvin from LSU if you want to see 2 gap guy. 6’3”and about 350 or so. He opted out of 2020, so I’d need to see what kind of shape he kept himself in but he’s a good player who is a lot more than just a big guy. He’s a good football player.

The Draft Network says this about him:

Shelvin isn’t a dynamic run defender simply because he’s big and strong, he knows how to fit his hands, find the football, disengage, and finish. Shelvin plays with tremendous urgency on every snap and competes hard in pursuit despite limited range. He’s dominant against single blocks and more than holds his own against doubles.

That's reality with basically any DT you draft.
These guys aren't really finished products at 22.
You gotta draft and develop them OR you grab bottom of NFL types who have been developed but just hit a ceiling elsewhere.
Good defensive teams grab these guys and develop them while bad defensive teams keep taking shiny object offensive guys that offer more immediate return.

LaRoi Glover wasn't a regular starter until his 3rd season.

I agree. There is always a hit or miss with DTs, probably more so than any other position. But I'd rather hit or miss with guys picked in rounds 2-4 instead of the 1st round.

Defensive tackle is a hard position to evaluate as well. A lot of the important things they do for your defense doesn't show up on the stat sheet. It takes someone who really knows what to look for to properly grade a DT prospect.

I wasn't real high on Barmore either until the national championship game. He played lights out and looked to be worthy of a first round pick. I'm not sure if we should pick him in the first, but I bet he is drafted in the 1st after his performance.

I would pick a corner with the 10th pick for value alone. A corner can play for 10+ years at a high level. DT might give you 4-5 good years until his body begins to break down. This is the same reasoning to why you don't pick a RB with a top 10 pick. 3-4 good years and they begin to fade physically. We should still draft two or even three DTs in the rounds 2-7 this draft.

What dt faded after 5 years?

I love Shelvin, my worry is that after taking a year off football, he’s going to be closer to 400.

We will have to wait until the true measurements come out. I hope I’m wrong but Nixon looks on the smaller size in the videos I’ve seen.

He’s my (very) early favorite for pick 10. I also like Surtain, Farley and maybe Parsons.

Still, I love dominant DT’s and I think Nixon would help the DL immensely. I do want to see how he tests before I feel good about him at 10.
This is the first time I'm ever up for taking a CB early just because of how this draft seems to fall.

I'm concerned about Parsons ability to make an impact at the next level as opposed to being exactly what we already have.

I think his position ultimately pushes him into ehe 12-15 range.

Yeah, I kinda feel that way myself. I really like Surtain regardless because he’s just so experienced, so talented and so smart. He’s as close as you can get to a sure thing. He’s done it for 3 years in the best conference and all he’s done is improve every year. I would be more than happy to have Diggs/Surtain manning the two outside CB spots. That would be a great combo for years to come.

Parsons is tempting because he’s so explosive but I have some worries and one of those is the position he plays. Dallas could draft a LB like McGrone in the 3rd round and he would give a lot of what Parsons would give you. If Parsons’ maturity issues come to pass, McGrone could be better.

Give me:

1 Surtain
2 Tufele
3 McGrone
4 Shelvin

and I’d be extremely happy and Quinn would have a whole lot more to work with.

I worry about that too. I wish he would’ve played this year.

Still, teams should be able to figure out what kind of shape he’s in easily enough. If he can be taken in the 4th, I’d damn sure give him a long look.

Hear you on Surtain.

I kinda like Farley a bit better. Ball skills seem better and in today's NFL, I think getting that interception here and there is a valuable thing as opposed to guy that excels mostly in covering.

I sincerely doubt Farley is there at 10 so probably moot.

I also wouldn't be shocked if Farley was there and Surtain isn't.

Probably depends on how much teams are willing to overlook not playing for two years.

This is gonna be a strange draft. Even more so when the results are in down the road.

Is it me, or does Nixon seem to have some VERY LONG arms? If so, he's gonna be a leverage NIGHTMARE for OL once he masters technique (and, of course, gets stronger).

I just like Surtain’s savvy a little more than I like Farley’s added athleticism, but for me it is really close. I’d be happy with either.

I bet that some teams will have Surtain first and others will have Farley there. Like I said, I see them as very close.

I normally would like to go DL before CB... but unless Nixon really wow’s in the lead up to the draft, I don’t see any DL that is the equal of the two corners.

I can’t tell with the arm length but I do know that he’s a smart, ascending player that should get better and better. I really like his game and want him to climb enough to be worth the 10th pick.

You’re right that long arms would help his chances a lot.

Farley also opted out this season isn't that correct? I like them both but I tend to lean towards Surtain

Yeah, he did. That matters to me. Maybe it shouldn’t but I know this: I loved playing football. I mean LOVED it. Practice, games, workouts... I loved every second of it. I felt a strong obligation to be there beside my team mates. Had I been in Farley’s shoes, there is no way that I would have opted out. No way.

What does all that mean? Maybe nothing, but when looking at prospects it factors in a little for me. I can’t help it. I wouldn’t let it effect two prospects where one is way better... but with two rookies that are very close, I lean the way of the guy that was there for his team.

Love of the game is a very important trait to me.

I’m a little worried about Farley and injuries. I know ACLs aren’t nearly as big of deal like they were 20 years ago but he also missed games for back issues as well.
