Davonte Wyatt at 24

Wyatt is not a 1st round player. He’s having a nice Senior Bowl, but where was the production ? He played on a stacked Georgia team and looked like a good player. But never looked like a 1 st round talent.

I like Lindenbaum C from Iowa and Green OL Texas A&M

Christian Barmore, Raekwon Davis, Quinnen Williams, Da’Ron Payne. And there were other Bama DT’s who were drafted while he was there.

This DT class is very underwhelming. I don’t think there’s anyone that pops out on tape as a significant upgrade over what kind prospect Gallimore was. Maybe if couple late 2nd round types…just wait til the 3rd and see who falls.

we’ve tried this and it’s failed for us. It’s time to be proactive and not reactive and where you’re looking for pop I’m looking for lunch pail. A DT that collapses the pocket and stops the run and puts the other team in 3rd and 7 but will come to play is good enough value for me at 24. If David is there I’m taking him IF IF IF work ethic and motor are not an issue

Rd 1 might be a little rich. He does have good traits, but more of a developmental prospect. Also, I think his lack of length would bother our DC.
They liked Milton Williams and Tony Togiai last year, so less than ideal arm length may not be a killer for them

They did like both players, but didn't take either. Eagles, probably took Williams before their pick, but had chances to take Tog. I believe both Osa/Golston had elite length for the position.

There is no way of knowing if they would have taken Williams, but Im not convinced less than ideal arm length is a deal breaker for Quinn. He found alot of use for both Gallimore and Hill, and neither have plus arm length. Im sure he favors it, too much evidence to support that. But I think if there are enough traits he likes, he will over look it.

Im not sure I follow with with “we’ve tried this”…IMO one of our biggest misses in recent drafts a few years ago was passing on some quality 2nd round DTs that were available. Reaching for need gives you guys like Hill. Gally and Osa were solid picks in the 3rd we just need more help at the position.

Id love to have what you’re looking for…but that player isn’t in this draft. Davis is a 2 down, run stuffer only that is a rotational player. That profile screams 3rd round or later. Taking him at 24 would be a horrible, horrible value.

And he couldn’t get any run with them there. Tells you where he stacks up in terms of comparing them.

by we’ve tried this I meant, waiting for someone to fall to rd 3 and taking them. We need to be proactive, evaluate talent and take the player we like instead of waiting for others to decide for us

when you say “he screams rd 3”, I guess I don’t follow, why then is he ranked as a first rounder? It is clear that NFL talent evaluators and scouts don’t agree with you. I believe it is a philosophical difference in how we view teams should be built. To me a DT with a high motor who stops the run and makes the other team one dimensional and gets them to 3rd and 7 so my pass rush can work is worth number 24. But that’s just me

Are you saying all the DT’s Bama has had drafted since he’s been there are better than him. What’s the right spot for Mathis in the desert?

But what you’re talking about is reaching for need instead of taking the top talent. That is a very poor way to build a roster.

I honestly don’t know why some analysts have the kid as a 1st rounder…I don’t see much difference in what he’s going to bring to the table vs a FA run stuffer we could get cheap.

I laugh when I see people clinging to these buzz phrases like “reaching for need”

Many analysts said the Chargers reached when they drafted Herbert and KC reached when the traded up to get Mahomes. You can bet they’re not saying that now

Brugler has Cardinals taking Davis at 23 but they’re not “reaching” but if we take him at 24 we are “reaching” because you think we are “reaching”? LOL

I’ll take the word of NFL talent evaluators before someone on a message board

“Reaching” is all about talent evaluation. If you evaluated the player correctly and he delivers what you thought then you didn’t reach. That’s what team building via the draft is, proper talent evaluation.

But you’re talking about QBs…if a team is desperate for a QB they essentially have to reach bc it’s the most valuable position on the team.

Our argument is over a 2 down DT that will be a rotational player. IMO it is poor roster management to give a 1st round contract to that kind of player. Same goes for an off ball LBr that has coverage / rush limitations, slot only CBS, RBs, kickers etc…

Danes the best but keep in mind it’s a mock draft based off what he thinks a team will do not necessarily what he would do. If you’ve listen to the draft show over the years he’s talked about this as it relates to DT prospects.

like I said, different philosophies

.

It is not that those teams were desperate. KC already had a very very good QB. Any team would take those 2 at the top of any draft now. That means that in hindsight those 2 were worth the place they were picked by teams that evaluated them properly. It is only people who misevaluated them that thought they were a “reach”.

point is that what was a reach to others was not a reach to those teams because of how well they evaluated them. In the end a “reach” is only if you don’t evaluate the player properly

Well yea…I mean of course guys like Mahomes and Allen aren’t reaches but teams reach for QBs for the most part.

That’s why you’re seeing guys like Howell and Willis mocked as 1st rounders this year…are they 2 of the best 25ish players in this class? Not even freaking close but teams will roll the dice because of the value of the QB position.

i like the player but not at 24.
