I would say at 1-3 and in sole possession of last place, that the "panic button" time has come at Valley Ranch.

In all my years of watching this team (since 75) this has to be the most uninspired, underachieving bunch ever. The talent level is much too high to be continuously seeing these keystone cops like efforts. There are some holes, but in the end when you have cornerstone players at QB, WR (plural), TE, RB, LT, OLB (plural), NT and CB (plural) there just isnt any excuse for this kind of play.

Two weeks to prepare for a team I'd consider a fairly mediocre opponent, at home, and they were a flat out joke. Almost all teams eventually take on the persona of the HC, and unfortunately thats not a good thing here.

1) I dont know that it would do any good for this season, and I know Jerry has never done it before. But I think he has to fire Wade now. Wade's best asset is that he was supposed to be a defensive expert, but now the defense looks like a joke. So if he isnt coaching the defense up, he really isnt worth much here IMO. The team constantly comes up with flat, uninspired efforts that are plagued by stupid mistakes, turnovers and penalties. I'd promote Garrett, simply because there really isnt another option on the staff. Going outside to get another coach to come in NOW really isnt an option IMO. If nothing changes, at least you know then Garrett isnt the answer and you start over with a new search in January. The DC position then becomes a problem, but there are some options there and perhaps they could go outside to find someone to consult and/or call the defense.

2) We saw the best and worst of Romo yesterday. I think he's succumbing to the pressure (not pass rush pressure either) a little, feeling like he has to do SOMETHING. He took 1 or 2 sacks he didnt need to take (especially the one before Buehler's miss) and two of the picks were poor decisions, although I dont blame him much for the last one because of the situation. Otherwise he had a pretty sensational game.

3) I think they have to bench Alan Ball now. Its getting worse exponentially every week. He's a dreadful tackler and seems to be constantly out of position. Not sure what they are telling him to do, but he's never around the ball in the air. Sensabaugh isnt much better to be honest.

4) Mike Jenkins, that was one of the alltime clunker games. I do tend to give him some slack though, as he is proven to be a bigtime CB and I do believe he is playing less than 100% since that knee thing happened. Orlando Scandrick should join Ball on the bench though IMO. Guy is totally lost with the ball in the air.

5) Montrae Holland was a VAST improvement at RG over Leonard Davis, unfortunately he got hurt during the game and had to come out. Davis probably played better when he came back, but that wouldnt be saying much. I think it was him who missed the block on the 2nd and goal run by Jones, when he got drilled. Before he was benched, several of the sacks appeared to be his fault.

6) Most of the penalties were deserved yesterday IMO, but I still saw them as being incredibly one sided. But when the team leading the league in penalties and personal fouls comes into your place, and you outnumber them in penalties 12 to 4 with over 133 yds in yardage, something is wrong.

7) Great game wasted by Felix Jones, I think we've officially seen the end of the MBIII era here and barring injury, I doubt he ever gets more (or even the same) number of carries as Jones gets. I also dont recall Choice getting a single carry. With the team 1-3 and several teams badly needing RB's, I think Choice or Barber has a really decent chance of being traded before the deadline.

8) What a trio of WR's we're gonna have for years to come. Those thinking RW should have been cut a long time ago and would definitely have no future here, time for your serving of crow I think. He's a totally different player this year. Miles Austin is definitely one of the top 3 or 4 WR's in the league, and Bryant has STAR writen all over him. Could have had a long TD yesterday had Romo not overthrown him.

The season isnt over. We could make a run still, but those odds look extremely long to me. The stuff that has caused us to lose the 3 games in 4 tries isnt suddenly going to go away IMO. They are undisciplined. They are fundamentally poor in most areas. They make dumb mistakes in droves. I like Wade, nice guy. At times has been an exceptional defensive coach. But he's taken us as far as we can go. I dont think the team has quit on him by any means, but I do think they doubt him. Something's gotta change.

Jerry's got some tough decisions in the next week or so in regards to coaching and personnel. If they lose to Minny to fall to 1-4, they have to potentially start thinking about the offseason, and maybe put a few guys on the market to get draft picks. Probably will be time to consider some of the younger guys for bigger roles too.

- I've never understood the hype for Scandrick. He's Jacques Reeves bad as far being an on ball corner. He may be able to run with guys, but it means absolutely nothing if you just let them catch it. With him, this happens to a maddening degree. I'm surprised more teams don't just gun it in on him irregardless of whether he's got his man reasonably well covered. It's not like he's going to intercept the ball.

- In regards to Leonard Davis, it's no surprise that a ridiculously immobile lineman can't get it done on a team that's chucking it 45 times a game. This goes back to that beaten to death "identity" buzzword, but if the Cowboys are going to be a "Star Wars" fling it all around the field offense, he's exactly the kind of offensive lineman that shouldn't be on the roster.

Nice post...good insights...I do find it amusing though that people always look to Jerry Jones to make decisions during the season and help turn the team around when actually "real" gms put the team together and then back away during the season and let the coaches coach em.

The success of the coach hinges on what he does with the players given.

The success of the gm hinges on what he does putting the team together, players and coaches, but generally the gm's work is done in the off season for the most part.

People can't have it both ways...blame Jerry for being the owner/gm, make fun of him and assume he makes game decisions and then turn around and expect him to make decisions during the season.

Yeah, I wouldn't look for a coaching change during the season.

Jerry will let this train wreck persist right to the end. The team will end up like 7 and 9, and Wade will be gone sometime after Jan 1.

Normally I'd agree, but Jerry has a interim HC and DC on staff, so he can change and hope for the better. Even Jerry knows by now, Wade gets him nothing.

I think you're more likely (though not necessarily going to happen either) to see some players benched or demoted from being starters.

Look what Chicago did to Tommie Harris... Deactivating him for a game. That's about the easiest thing that could be done right now.

Wade is supposed to be here for his defensive ability. When was the last time that we blitzed that it wasn't stonewalled? Where are the turnovers? Why did we give up 34 points to a Vince Young led team yesterday?

WADE MUST GO NOW. Look what The Rat is doing with the Commanders club in DC. We need a coach. Plain and simple.

Look at Wade on the sidelines. Totally defeated. Clueless. In over his head. Pretty much how he has been everywhere he has been. He was probably having flashbacks of the music city miracle yesterday.

He is a nice guy but we owe him nothing. Be gone with him. Move on.

Your best post-game assessment, db. Good stuff.

I've never been in favor of firing coaches in mid-season, but the team's getting nothing from Wade.

My questions are:

• Why are there always receivers running WIDE OPEN in our secondary?
• Why does our blitz hardly EVER get there?

 :banghead:

it seems like we are a one blitz pony. We like to send a linebacker right up the middle. I remember a few years ago this was very effective. Now it seems like teams have been blocking it and we don't get near the QB.

This bothers me alot too. he doesnt exude confidence at all, and I think the team sees it just like we do. Even before things start going wrong he seesm to have that frustrated, defeated as you say look.

This team is an embarrassment.

How do you root for a team that plays so stupid and uninspired?

It all boils down to Jerry Jones.

Here is a man so insecure that he has to have all the attention and credit with everything going on with the team.

He has to be the face of the Cowboys.

F him.

I'm sick of it.

Hire a real coach and get out of the damn way.

Go see if you can be an ambassador to some country the way the real elite franchise of the NFL owner does.

Great post. If you bench Ball and Scandy don't you have to play Ball anyway as nickel CB?

Good, levelheaded analysis.

I was going to ask why we never do corner blitzes, but then I remembered who our corners are.

First of all: Thank you for the good read.

I do not see the moment as crucial as you do regarding coaching or player changes. Let's say i see it a bit "milder": We still have a chance to compete Even if i i have to agree with most of the problems that you described.

Since Wade came here this team played undisciplined regarding penelties. We could live with it as long as we had success. Right now those problems come into consideration because we are losing. But all in all it's a trend you can't deny and in my opinion there is no question that its mainly because of Wade Philips.

But to get rid of Wade Philips just because of that would be a big mistake in my eyes. For me our defense looks good. It doesn't give me a feeling like it could ever be a dominating one (like let's say the Steelers have). I do not think you will ever get a dominating one with a Defense Coach like Philips. But that should be not real problem. What we have is a defense that is near to be dominant. And i think that is an accomplishment you should not underestimate.

Second noone can blame Philips for poor play by his players. To be not prepared is a thing you can put on the coach but in the loss yesterday there were a lot players that just weren't able to give a good performance. You already mentioned players like Ball. But especially Scandrick looks like a weak link more and more to me.

I personally don't feel bad about Jenkins' game. Sure he had the long ball were he looked like he stopped after the catch because of frustration. And he often acts like he thinks he doesn't need more work and acts like he is already a star noone can beat anymore. But don't make the mistake to rate him worse then he is. To me he is our best CB and played 4 good to great games. He is a player that is able to take away the long ball even if opposing QB trying to test him. He gives me the feeling that a long ball to his side isn't a risk for us getting beat. He looks for the ball and ist barly out of position. He defended two fades against (i guess it was) Houston really good. Even last night he droppt a sure interception. You have to play good CB to be in position to at least have a chance to pick that ball.

Brooking is another player i am disappointed with this season. I think most of the people are "in love" with him because he was someone last year who "seemed" to bring in some kind of mentallity this team seemed to lack. First i loved his pregame speaches but over time it felt more like a showeffect rather then the real Keith Brooking to me.

The titans started the game pass happy. Now someone can blame Wade Philips for not preparing the defense right. I mean even a blind man could see that happening after everybody was unamiously in believe that we had to stop CJ first. But i don't think it's that easy. We played bad defense individually in the begining of the game and Brooking was one of those players. All in all i think Brooking is on the decline and i think it shows this year. It's not like this was the first game this season he played medicore.

Felix game was good but it did not convince me that we should trade one of our other RBs just because of it. Not now. Give me 2-3 more of those efforts and another 1 or 2 were he shows he can be more dominant and consitent (even if the play breaks down). Then i think it's time to hand him the job offically. After that i think we can trade one of them away but right now theres still too much risk involved. But of course i too think FJ since yesterday's performance is "unoffically" set as the starter.

Your right, leave them out there in their current roles so they can continue to make the same mistakes and continue to be a liability

I believe the time is now to face the facts that The Dallas Cowboys need change and drastic change now.

You can say we made the playoffs last year and we out gain and outplay most teams but the bottom line is we are 1 & 3 and it's the same old thing year after year .

Beat the rush and go after a new H.C now.

Tell me Who's fault it is for all the penalties . You mean to tell me that the players on Dallas seem to be different than the players on other teams. There has to be a reason and I have to believe it's the coaching.

We are not going to win The SB with this team ,and lets face it, That's why were here.

We can't dump the players but the coaching staff must go and hope he makes moves and changes the attitude.

I can't stand when they're losing and we make a good play and we start the showboating, the first down signs and the posing, that crap should be stopped!!!!

If you want to call it rebuilding than I guess you can, I'd like to think of it as a mid season adjustment.

Sorry for the rant,:(

I enjoy reading your post game thoughts....good points...you left out buehler though...I mean it is a constant week in and week out

I too believe a change at HC is needed. I do know that we have to start rebuilding this OL in the 2011 Draft.

With those two on the bench, you are starting McCray or Church and AOA is the nickel. That's the future, but are we really going to do that?

About as likely as firing Phillips.
