Day After Thoughts

Ball needs to go. Like off the team.

He's horrible on special teams. I can't remember which kickoff return it was, but even before the returner tried to get outside, Ball turned around expecting him to. So Ball basically escorted Mariani to the outside for another 10-15 yards.

I'd cut Ball, activate Mike Hamlin for special teams duties and plug in McCray at FS.

BTW I'm thoroughly enjoying my Roy crow. I actually find him fun to watch now.

1) I dont know that it would do any good for this season, and I know Jerry has never done it before. But I think he has to fire Wade now. Wade's best asset is that he was supposed to be a defensive expert, but now the defense looks like a joke. So if he isnt coaching the defense up, he really isnt worth much here IMO. The team constantly comes up with flat, uninspired efforts that are plagued by stupid mistakes, turnovers and penalties. I'd promote Garrett, simply because there really isnt another option on the staff. Going outside to get another coach to come in NOW really isnt an option IMO. If nothing changes, at least you know then Garrett isnt the answer and you start over with a new search in January. The DC position then becomes a problem, but there are some options there and perhaps they could go outside to find someone to consult and/or call the defense.

I agree. The team is routinely unprepared to play, and even if they are prepared to play, they errors that they make (dumb penalites) are largely unacceptable. I understand that players make mistakes, and I even expect a holding call here or there, or an illegal use of hands if our guys are hustling, but the blocks in the back and personal fouls and other idiotic penalties have absolutely no excuse.

2) We saw the best and worst of Romo yesterday. I think he's succumbing to the pressure (not pass rush pressure either) a little, feeling like he has to do SOMETHING. He took 1 or 2 sacks he didnt need to take (especially the one before Buehler's miss) and two of the picks were poor decisions, although I dont blame him much for the last one because of the situation. Otherwise he had a pretty sensational game.
I agree on Romo - I feel as if he feels like he has to make a play to try and make stuff happen. He definitely had to gamble a lot more yesterday than he normally does, and I place that blame solely on the offensive line, and more specifically on Davis and Gurode. I defended them in the offseason, and Gurode hasn't been too bad, but Davis looked like Alex Barron out there yesterday.

3) I think they have to bench Alan Ball now. Its getting worse exponentially every week. He's a dreadful tackler and seems to be constantly out of position. Not sure what they are telling him to do, but he's never around the ball in the air. Sensabaugh isnt much better to be honest.

4) Mike Jenkins, that was one of the alltime clunker games. I do tend to give him some slack though, as he is proven to be a bigtime CB and I do believe he is playing less than 100% since that knee thing happened. Orlando Scandrick should join Ball on the bench though IMO. Guy is totally lost with the ball in the air.
Alan Ball, boy was I wrong. Sit him down now, and play Barry Church or Danny McCray. Scandrick should be moved in the offseason, and once again cornerback becomes a top priority in the draft.

5) Montrae Holland was a VAST improvement at RG over Leonard Davis, unfortunately he got hurt during the game and had to come out. Davis probably played better when he came back, but that wouldnt be saying much. I think it was him who missed the block on the 2nd and goal run by Jones, when he got drilled. Before he was benched, several of the sacks appeared to be his fault
Appears as if all Montrae Holland does is work hard and block people. Holland haters haven't seemed to be able to understand that, but now I wonder what the hell our coaching staff has been doing if Holland has been a baller and Davis has been a goat for quite some time. And no need to think it - Davis whiffed on a block that would have scored Felix, and all he had to do was block SOMEONE, not even one guy over the other.

6) Most of the penalties were deserved yesterday IMO, but I still saw them as being incredibly one sided. But when the team leading the league in penalties and personal fouls comes into your place, and you outnumber them in penalties 12 to 4 with over 133 yds in yardage, something is wrong.
Triplette's crew. 'Nuff Said.

7) Great game wasted by Felix Jones, I think we've officially seen the end of the MBIII era here and barring injury, I doubt he ever gets more (or even the same) number of carries as Jones gets. I also dont recall Choice getting a single carry. With the team 1-3 and several teams badly needing RB's, I think Choice or Barber has a really decent chance of being traded before the deadline.
LaMichael James is my pet cat for the draft (until I find a top flight CB or S...I think the guy from UCLA is a beast). Send Barber and Choice away if we can get James from Oregon, and call up LonYae from the practice squad to be the 3rd RB since he'll see the field as much as Choice anyway.

8) What a trio of WR's we're gonna have for years to come. Those thinking RW should have been cut a long time ago and would definitely have no future here, time for your serving of crow I think. He's a totally different player this year. Miles Austin is definitely one of the top 3 or 4 WR's in the league, and Bryant has STAR writen all over him. Could have had a long TD yesterday had Romo not overthrown him.
Roy Williams proved to everyone that he has a spot on this team. Dez Bryant is definitely going to be our best WR one day, and Miles Austin is probably tops in the league right now.

Anyway the rest of your post I disagree with - the season isn't over only chronologically. As far as playoff hopes and championship hopes, we can just revert back to our old nickname: "Next Year's Champions."

Your best post-game assessment, db. Good stuff.

I've never been in favor of firing coaches in mid-season, but the team's getting nothing from Wade.

My questions are:

• Why are there always receivers running WIDE OPEN in our secondary?
• Why does our blitz hardly EVER get there?

Defensive scheme by our Defensive Head Coordinator. "Keep in front" and "bend but don't break" style of defense. No real pressure, no high-intensity play, just don't give up the big play and try and force a field goal.

I want us to play between the 20s the same way we play teams in the red zone.

Nice Post .......

Im not as disappointed as you were tho.....I hate to see the Boys lose but the Titans and because of the parity in this league.....there are no pushovers in this league.

Im not sold on how great the talent is on this team. Sure Romo puts up big numbers and is one of the better QB's....Austin is great too....Ware is a pro bowler.....but when do our suppose star players make more plays then the other team?...

Didnt the titans DL cause more havoc then our pro bowl DL? or maybe the titans no name OL held up better then our OL.....either way....where is all that talent?

I thought the titans inside LB's played better then ours and I never heard of those guys...

Newman is quietly having a good season.....no one really throw it his way....but Jenkin's stunk up the joint with his performance....and these so called no name titan WR's made plays.....

Say what you want.....but we are not that much talented then alot of teams in the NFL....and imho.....i dont know if coaching will help.

If things fall our way....we win....if they dont....we lose....we can blame the refs all we want....but there is a reason we hold...pass interfere.....block in the back.....etc.....and its because....our so called talented player got beat....

Maybe we are just a stupid talented team....i dont know.....there were some calls....and its amazing that opposing teams block our pro-bowlers DL without a hold .....how many holds do we get called for?

Im feeling low today after that loss....it was a somewhat exciting game and Jeff Fisher really bothers me.....for whatever reason.....off to next week.....

The only positive to this season is that we will be in prime drafting position to get a premium guard in the first and safety in the second.

Great post. A few things were answered yesterday. Some good, some bad. Felix proved that he was worthy of a first round pick and could shoulder the load with more carries. He was one of the few bright spots in the game. I hope yesterday`s offensive line debacle will force Jerry to spend some high draft picks in the draft to start addressing a problem that should have been fixed two years ago. Davis was benched ( which was long overdue) and Holland looked solid. Columbo is done. The thing that bothers me the most , is the gutless , sloppy play from the team as a whole. I`d rather have a player with limited talent that gave 100% , than an ultra-talented player that gives 50%. As far as coaching, Jerry should appoint himself head coach. He has really wanted the position for the last 15 years. This would be the perfect time for him to get it out of his system. ( yes , I`m being sarcastic)

Regarding Davis -- remember that thread way back when about the scuttlebutt coming from the coaching staff about Davis being such a liability? Remember how that article got roundly poo-pooed for as being scandal mongering? What an underappreciated bit of journalism that was!!

Regarding Wade, my agreement with you is obvious from my signature alone. But let me play Jerry's advocate for a moment. I think if this keeps up, Wade will be fired. It might not be this week, though. Jerry watched this team successfully fight for their lives last year in somewhat similar circumstances. Their backs were definitely against the wall. I hope Wade is fired today but I don't expect it to happen. He'll let Wade know that it's win next week or you're out. I really don't see Wade staying on at 1-4 but Jerry will most likely give him a chance to get there.

In the end, there's not much difference between Wade getting fired at 1-4 than at 1-3. One lousy game. You'll still have 11 full games to evaluate JG (or whoever the interim coach is.)

If Wade pulls out a win against Minnesota, he's probably bought himself at least another couple games. I don't see Jerry letting Wade survive at, say, 2-6 any more than at 1-4.

My fear with promoting Garrett is that the team will do just enough that Jerry can't justify firing him even if he's not ready.

It's always easier to not hire someone than it is to fire them.

Much like Wade when Dallas hired him, I don't see anyone pursuing Garrett as their head coach, and Jerry's biggest screwups have come when he's made unconventional decisions that most teams wouldn't have made (bringing in both pacman and tank on a team that already had TO, making wade a hc, hiring an inexperienced oc, not bringing in a kicker, Galloway trade, etc.).

I was going to ask why we never do corner blitzes, but then I remembered who our corners are.
Honestly, that's the only play Scandrick does well.

This is a very good point. I have the same fear; I'm still willing to take the chance, though. I think at this stage we absolutely know that Wade is a dead man walking. I'd rather try JG now than later.

People have already pursued Garrett as their HC, it will probably happen again.

That said, that isnt why I'd promote him now. Nor do I see them improving and playing better as a bad thing if they did promote Garrett. Thats the reason you let go of Wade, to see if it makes a difference. If it does, then perhaps he is the answer long term. If its the same 'ol same 'ol, then we know we have to start over.

David, I'm sincerely not trying to gloat -- but do you really still think that Ball is playing equivalent to Hamlin right now?

The guy is losing us games.

Ken Hamlin > Alan Ball, and it's not even close.

Now go back and watch the games from last year where Ball played. He looked just as bad. But he was fortunate enough to not cost us games.

Interceptions by safeties are by and large about luck. They're about errant throws -- overthrown, underthrown, hail mary's with no hope. Only the very rare safety actually creates turnovers.

The safety job is about being in position *ALL THE TIME*. You can't be in position 80% of the time. You have to make the right, instant decision every single play. If not, you'll give up huge plays and be the difference between winning and losing. Hamlin was almost never out of position. You never had to worry about a deep pass when he was on the field. That was his job and he did it exceedingly well.

I think we'd be 3-1 if Hamlin was still on the team. Sad, but it's those handful of plays that Hamlin wouldn't screw up (and Ball did) that makes the difference in the season.

Ok guys. Let's get behind the other 31 NFL teams rushing to sign Ken Hamlin and hope he gets past them all.

Maybe Jerry can use the powers of the darkside to help.
