OXNARD, Calif. – One of the most competitive drills each day in camp is when head coach Jason Garrett huddled the entire team around a specific 1-on-1 drill, calling out two players to the middle.

The aptly-named “Compete Drill” is something Ben Gardnerhas only observed in his short time with the club. But that changed this week when Garrett called out Gardner to face tackle Darrion Weems.

“That’s fun. You always want that chance,” Gardner said. “We do it every day but I had never been called out before. When it’s your time, you just block everything out and do what you do.”

What Gardner did was simply win his battle with Weems, yanking the offensive tackle off-balance to get past him. That’s one of Gardner’s few pass-rush moves, but when it comes to pass rushing, the “less is more” approach might be the best.

“You don’t really need all that much to be successful,” Gardner said. “You don’t need a whole laundry list full of pass-rush moves you just need to be really good at what you do and just have two or three things that are your Go-To’s and that’s what you can do to be successful.”

I want to see it on grass with most of the new faces and some of the old ones. But I'm excited about seeing multiple players.

I saw this guy when watching the NFLN special, and I wondered, who is that guy? And, I thought I saw Colombo talking to him a few times.

Not only is Colombo helping the pass rush drills, he know what to do against an offensive lineman.

Gardner. McClain. Bishop. I have no idea who our second best defensive tackle is.

I do know who it isn't, however. And his name rhymes with Nick Hayden.

We need a couple of these guys down the depth chart yo really take that next step
One thing that really helped the 90's teams was the quality of the depth and hopefully we can finally have that again
The starters will be better with less snaps and the defense can be better late in games when you need those stops most of all

Last year he was projected as a SDE before getting hurt. He could have made an impact last year considering Selvie was our only SDE until Spencer got healthy. Unforunately, he missed his chance. This year, however, he's the odd man out at DE, in my opinion. We have a surplus of DEs. What we really need is a backup 3-tech. There was talk last year that Gardener could also play 3-tech. Let's hope that's where he makes an impact because we're relying on DEs to play DT.

Did he really win that snap against Weems? I looking at the video on my phone, but it looked more like a draw.

Gardener could could be a good effort/power player at both LDE and DT. I dont think he has the bogangles to be a dominant pass rusher, but I think he can be a pocket pusher
