Considering WR Roy's Future Impact

The off-season isn't three weeks old, and already a debate seems to be brewing about whether the Cowboys' front office should strongly consider releasing wide receiver Terrell Owens.

The central argument, obviously, is whether the Cowboys believe Owens is enough of a distraction to warrant releasing him with three years left on his lucrative contract (he's also due a $3.1 million roster bonus in June). His age (36 in December) is a consideration, but the Cowboys knew that when they gave him an extension last summer. And his numbers this year (69 catches, 1,052 yards, 10 touchdowns) prove he's still a high-level player, even if his skills naturally will decline.

Roy Williams would seem to be another factor here. He made minimal impact in 10 games this season, but the Cowboys traded a first- and third-round pick, and signed him to a $45 million extension, as Owens' clear heir apparent.

Do the Cowboys believe Williams can return to top-receiver status with a full off-season in the system and a healthy foot? It's hard to believe Williams, a terrific receiver in Detroit, lost his game he came home to Texas.
Plenty to chew on.

Roy will be what we thought he would , a compliment to TO and a fine #2.

There is no reason to cut TO. Most of the hype is from the media, and most of the divisive issues, are with the fans tooting the medias horn. The team and the coaching staff can co-exist and be successful with TO on the team.

The real problems lie elsewhere, and they are being addressed. ST/OL etc.

You mean a year from now?

Roy is a possession receiver, not a huge play maker. While he can be the team's #1, we need to fill T.O.s void once he's gone.

Roy will be a fine WR, but he won't be another T.O.
Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson are the future of the position.

Michael Irvin was the ultimate playmaker and he wasn't even close to being as fast as Roy Williams is.

I think there will be a big difference with Roy Williams once he is able to go through the mini camps and training camp and develops timing with Romo. Even guys like Manning and Harrison have to put the work in together to perform as they do. The work you put in during the season is not the same as teams are more focused on the opponent they are about to face so many of the basics are not being worked on during the season.

I think TO saw the writing on the wall when the Roy trade went down...

Roy Williams will never have Irvin's impact even with his immense skills, simply b/c he has neither the passion or the work ethic that Irvin, or even an Owens possesses.

He better be able to fill in for Owens (whenever Owens leaves).

Giving up a 1st and 3rd for a WR should mean #1 WR.

If he's anything but, its an epic failure.

Roy will be a fine #1......if we can just get a coach to committ to the freakin run with these 3 backs and our offensive line (built to run block). It can be play action city usa!

I still don't get the faction of guys that think we need ALL-STARS!

How's that Curtis fellow for the Eagles?

What about Mason?

How about that Heinz Ward dude (on the decline by the way)?

Zona...I'll give ya...but they have NO backs!

We actually have too many weapons.....Romo get's confused back there....it's like a Pro-Bowl.

I doubt Roy Williams ever becomes the HOF WR Owens is.

I hope he can at least become a viable #1 WR for us when Owens leaves.

With the nonsense that T.O. brings on himself, the teams he's played on, the media that covers him...if you think he will ever get into the HOF...well, we will see about that!

His mumbers might be great, but his demeanor does not make him a HOF'er.

I doubt that I will ever see it!

Good thing that we gave him that massive contract - that will motivate him to get better and work harder.

Let's see what he does this Offseason.

He's on the big stage now and he'll be pushed this offseason.

Uhhh, in his first 55 games in the NFL, covering his first 4 seasons, he had 28 TDs, and 13 plays of over 40 yards, 62 of over 20... this for a team with crap at quarterback...

Sure sounds like a playmaker to me...

As for being a "possession receiver", has career YPC is 14.5, awfully close to TO's 14.8... I guess that three tenths of a yard makes all the difference, eh??

Roy can be a perfectly serviceable lead receiver, capable of 80 catches and 1200 yards in a season... if he stays healthy, which has been an issue...

On a team with a Jason Witten, that's good enough...
