The Cowboys will kick off their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) next week, practicing Tuesday through Thursday in nearby Carrollton.
They'll also hold three practices a week for the next three weeks after that. The workouts are fairly tame. Everyone's wearing helmets and shorts, and there will be no hitting. But there is a lot of reason to be eager for these practices. They'll be the first time the full squad has been together on the field since the Dec. 28 blowout loss to Philadelphia.
And there's something kind of therapeutic about getting back into the full swing of things in the wake of the May 2 accident. Coach Wade Phillips said after the first practice of the rookie mini-camp that he always looks forward to the first off-season practices of the year, but next week's action is sure to hold some special significance.
"I think our players are looking forward to it now. We do some passing drills and we call it teaching sessions, and we've been doing that for a while, but to get together as a team and run team drills. I don't know how many weeks now - about eight weeks - they've been working out at least four days a week. So they're ready for some football I think. It's good for them and good for us.
"Spring training's part of Texas football. It happens everywhere in Texas and this is kind of spring training for us. I do think our players look forward to it. They lift weights, they do their running and I know they're working hard, and they're doing it all for football."
