The Cowboys will kick off their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) next week, practicing Tuesday through Thursday in nearby Carrollton.

They'll also hold three practices a week for the next three weeks after that. The workouts are fairly tame. Everyone's wearing helmets and shorts, and there will be no hitting. But there is a lot of reason to be eager for these practices. They'll be the first time the full squad has been together on the field since the Dec. 28 blowout loss to Philadelphia.

And there's something kind of therapeutic about getting back into the full swing of things in the wake of the May 2 accident. Coach Wade Phillips said after the first practice of the rookie mini-camp that he always looks forward to the first off-season practices of the year, but next week's action is sure to hold some special significance.

"I think our players are looking forward to it now. We do some passing drills and we call it teaching sessions, and we've been doing that for a while, but to get together as a team and run team drills. I don't know how many weeks now - about eight weeks - they've been working out at least four days a week. So they're ready for some football I think. It's good for them and good for us.

"Spring training's part of Texas football. It happens everywhere in Texas and this is kind of spring training for us. I do think our players look forward to it. They lift weights, they do their running and I know they're working hard, and they're doing it all for football."

It will be a good learning experience for the young guys but you're not going to find out a whole lot about this team in shirts shorts and helmets.

This will be an intriguing season. There are a lot of questions and I'm eager to see the answers.

Wade has been saying that he is going to do some things "differently" this time around and change a bit.

Let's see with the OTAs, TC, etc. what we do, in fact, try to change.

Wade likes utilizing the linebackers in his version of the 3-4 and with:

DeMarcus Ware, Bradie James, Keith Brooking, Anthony Spencer, Greg Ellis, Bobby Carpenter, Matt Stewart, Brandon Williams, Jason Williams, Victor Butler, Stephen Hodge, etc...

he should be able to let these guys loose. I think linebacker play will be a major strength for us this year. The camp battles should be fun.

Don't forget Steven Octavien. He's not well known at all, but I really like the guys athleticism and enthusiasm. At the very least he'll be a very good player on special teams.

Before the draft, I thought he'd make the 53 man roster for sure... but after taking Williams and Hodge, I'm not so sure anymore.

I do like his play though.

These are the LBs I think will likely make the 53 man roster,

1. Ware - He's obviously a given.
2. B James - see Ware's rationale.
3. Brooking - ditto.
4. Spencer - still has massive upside and will hopefully reach his potential.
5. Ellis - I don't see him getting cut or traded this year. But this is his final year as a Cowboy, IMO.

6. J Williams - Does he allow the Cowboys the flexibility to cut Carpenter this year? I don't think so early on this season. Possibly by mid or end of the season though, he could take over that nickel spot.

7. Vic Butler - Ellis' last year, and we want to groom more OLBs.
8. B Williams - same rationale as for Vic Butler.
9. S Hodge - As a nickel LB, STs player, SS in certain schemes, etc. Now, this guy possibly could supplant Carpenter as the nickel LB early on this season. Hodge is physical, is used to playing in space more than J Williams/B Williams/V Butler, etc.

10. Carpenter OR [name the LB]. Assuming no injuries, I think Octavien and Matt Stewart will be competing for the 10th and final LB spot vs. Carpenter.

I'd guess that the edge probably goes to Carpenter. Even though Carp has been a disappointment thus far, as a nickel LB I could actually see him succeeding.
