Cowboys Stick With Their QB Draft Pick

[FONT=verdana, geneva]Unless something changes (because the "final" 53-man roster is never "final"), maybe the biggest winner from Saturday's cuts/roster decisions was rookie quarterback Stephen McGee.
McGee, a fourth-round draft choice, missed the last two preseason games with a sprained knee. But the Cowboys have opted to keep him on the active roster while he recovers from what's typically a month-long injury, give or take a week or two.
That's big for McGee's development. As we've mentioned before, McGee needs scout-team reps this season. Last year was his first and only season in a traditional offense at Texas A&M, and a shoulder injury limited him to six games and three starts.
By deciding not to place McGee on injured reserve, the Cowboys seem committed to grooming him in their system right away -- even though it's somewhat of a luxury to keep a third quarterback.
No surprise rookie free-agent quarterback Rudy Carpenter didn't survive the cuts despite a solid, poised effort against Minnesota. The Cowboys stood behind their draft pick who got injured during his touchdown pass Aug. 21 against Tennessee. He's certainly a developmental player, but the Cowboys like his arm, mobility and attitude.
Carpenter, though, is a logical practice squad candidate -- at least until McGee gets back to practice. He showed something Friday night.
